Chapter 380: Chapter 373: Redemption
"I’ve always been begging in the city area, occasionally receiving aid from the church. The kind priest would help some people, providing them with food, and teaching them loyalty to the God of Light." Truth said.
"Alright," Luo’er nodded his head. He pulled out a gold coin from his pocket, tables it, and then sat in his chair. He then presses his finger on the gold coin and said to Truth, "I do not currently have any silver coins, so I will temporarily give you this gold coin. Tell me all you know about the East City District."
"Everything about the East City District..." Truth, clutching her food, looked at him, confused by his request.
"That’s right, what you usually hear, all about the East City District," Luo’er comforted, "Don’t worry about saying the wrong thing. Just open your mouth and I can discern the truth from lies."
"Hmm..." Truth bowed her head, caught in hesitation. Despite Luo’er’s words, she still worried that she might say something wrong.
"How about this, I will ask a question, you will answer one." Seeing her indecisive look, Luo’er has shrugs helplessly.
"Yes!" Truth nodded her head, then stopped eating, her eyes wide and fixated on Luo’er.
"What do you know about the Bulldog Gang?" Luo’er asked.
"The Bulldog Gang... they’re very malicious, they’re all bad people!" At the mention of the Bulldog Gang, Truth trembled involuntarily, and he began looking around in fear.
"Don’t worry, I’m not from the Bulldog Gang, and they can’t hear you speaking here," As Luo’er was speaking, the door squeaked open and Hu Daoke walked in with a jug of water. Seeing the state of the two, he didn’t say anything, just put down the jug and quietly left.
Luo’er poured a glass of water for Truth. His expression was relaxed, so Truth didn’t feel any fear, but accepted the glass of water politely.
"Apart from them being evil, what else do you know?" Luo’er continued to ask.
"They..." Hugging the cup, Truth lowered her head to think, then confided sadly, "My mother... she... was once forced by them... to work. In the end, she passed away..."
"Hmm..." Luo’er nodded slightly, let out a sigh, and expressed his sympathy for Truth’s plight. Just as Dunuo had mentioned, the Bulldog gang monopolized underground businesses in the East City District. He wasn’t surprised that any profitable business involved the gang.
"What else?" Luo’er asked.
"They have many people living near the water, and many of the boats belong to them..." Truth said after some thought.
"They control the canal transportation?" Luo’er nodded then continued asking, "What else?"
"Also..." Truth gave it some thought, then opened her arms to demonstrate, saying in a serious tone, "They have a lot of magical weapons, those Otherworldly magical weapons... they can make huge sounds and flashes. Anyone hit by them would die painfully..."
"Otherworldly magical weapons... seems like this gang also controls the Earth weapon trade..." Luo’er accepted as he nodded.
"Do you know where their main den is?" Luo’er asked.
"I don’t know!" Truth shook her head in response.
"Alright, then do you know how they can be found?" Luo’er continued to ask.
"You can meet them by the water, they have a lot of boats..." Truth answered.
"By the water..." Luo’er muttered to himself.
While Luo’er was lost in thought, Truth quickly gulped down a mouthful of water which washed down the food lodged in her throat. Then, she continued to wolf down her food. Going without a proper meal for several days, her stomach was now overwhelmed by the sudden filling of food, causing it to seize in cramps.
"If you eat so fast, your stomach will hurt later." Watching her clutching her stomach in pain with a furrowed brow, Luo’er shook his head as a reminder.
Ordinary digestion provided a surge of energy to her body. She felt dizzy and an invisible energy erupted from her stomach, instantly spreading through her weak limbs.
She started to stop eating, to prevent the seizing stomach from squeezing the food out. The energy coming from the digested food made her heart race, inducing an unexplained sense of anxiety.
"What do you know about the Church Court?" Luo’er asked quietly as he watched her.
"The Church Court... the priests and nuns are all good people, they help us, let us listen to the teachings of God, and provide us with food, dispelling our sicknesses." Truth answered earnestly.
"Alright." Luo’er nodded his head. The Church was doing a good thing by helping people like her, regardless if it was for proselytizing or genuinely from their heart. Luo’er didn’t feel the need to criticize their actions.
"Have you heard any gossip about the Church Court?" Luo’er pressed.
"Hmm..." Truth gave it a serious thought for a while then she looked up at Luo’er as if an idea had struck her, "Father told us that if we see anyone from the Ancient States, we should tell them immediately."
"Why?" Luo’er asked subconsciously, puzzled at the statement.
"Father said..." Truth knitted her brows trying to recall, "He said the Bishop did not like people from Ancient States. If anyone from the Ancient States appears in East City District, the Bishop would be extremely angry."
""Is the Bishop...Bishop Dulens?" Luo’er hesitantly asked.
"Yes!" Truth nodded.
"Why does Dulens not like the people of the Ancient States?" Luo’er frowned, muttering to himself.
He had originally thought that the Church Court had banned the people of the Ancient States from entering the Holy Heart City, hence the decree. However, the news he discovered was unexpected. Although he didn’t know if it would be useful, he decided to make a note of it for now.
As the Cardinal Bishop of Holy Heart City, Dulens could be considered the de facto ruler of the religious sector in the city. Even Gudelv, who held secular political power, had to defer to him. Therefore, what Dulens disliked would be prohibited in Holy Heart City and decreed so.
"Do you know anything else?" Luo’er continued to ask.
"No, I don’t." Truth shook her head vigorously and replied honestly.
"Alright..." Luo’er tapped the gold coin with his finger and flicked it. The coin slid in front of Truth. He said to her, "This is your reward. Keep it safe; don’t let others find out, or I worry you wouldn’t be able to keep it. Or else, leave it with me for now. I’ll exchange it for silver and give it to you of equal value."
"I’ll leave it with you for now!" Truth resolutely answered.
"You trust me that much?" Luo’er shrugged, somewhat surprised at her response.
"You are not a bad person, and you even gave me a name." Truth looked at him, speaking sincerely.
"You didn’t have a name before I gave you one?" Luo’er asked with puzzlement.
"No, I didn’t." Truth shook her head.
"Didn’t your mother give you a name?" Luo’er asked.
"No, she said that me being born into this world was a sin, so she didn’t want to give me a name of our clan..." Truth responded.
"What did those priests and nuns call you then?" Luo’er pressed.
"They all just said ’you’ or ’that one’..." Truth answered truthfully.
"Alright, cherish this name then." Luo’er nodded, surprised at his unexpected good deed.
"For the time being, we’ll be staying here. You just go and gather information, then return and tell me. The same rules apply - one silver coin for each piece of useful information!" Luo’er instructed seriously.
"I understand!" Truth nodded excitedly. Luo’er’s request felt like a gift to her. She could fulfill it almost without any effort.
Luo’er looked her up and down, then said: "Soon, I’ll arrange for a room to be opened next door for you. Wash up, and then move in there. When we’re not around, just wait for us there."
"Sir, this is too..." Upon hearing his words, Truth suddenly became anxious.
"Too what?" Luo’er asked without any change in expression.
"No, I...I can sleep on the street. You are too kind to me, I won’t know how to repay you." Truth lowered her head, her excitement clearly visible.
"You’re working for us. It’s not appropriate for you to sleep in the streets." Luo’er said lightly.
"But, I..." As Truth spoke, her voice choked with sobs. As she hung her head, tears fell on the ground.
"Crying again..." Luo’er shook his head with some helplessness, then comforted her, "Okay, stop crying. Just work hard for me, and consider it as repaying me. Don’t feel like you owe me anything."
"I understand," Truth wiped away her tears, sniffed her nose, and said determinedly, "Even if you want me to die, I won’t hesitate."
"Isn’t that a bit extreme? I don’t want you to die. Be careful when carrying out tasks. Don’t go to dangerous places. You’re just a little girl; if you encounter a bad person, you won’t be able to escape." Luo’er said, frowning.
"Sir, don’t be so kind to me. It’ll make me feel like there are no bad people in this world..." Truth lowered her head and wept louder.
"Speaking of which, how old are you this year?" Something occurred to Luo’er and he couldn’t help asking.
"Thirteen..." Truth replied in a sob.
"As expected..." Luo’er nodded knowingly. Truth was a half-blood Snow Elf, and just like him, her mother was an Elf. As such, her appearance was much younger than her actual age.
When Luo’er was over ten years old, he was still mistaken for a six or seven-year-old child by the female researchers. Though Truth appeared to be only seven or eight, her actual age certainly exceeded her apparent age.
For Luo’er, Truth showed great agitation. She believed Luo’er was an envoy sent by the god of light to save her. In the language of the Earth people, he was an angel.
