Otherworld Advance Team
Chapter 368 - 361: Escape from the Tiger’s Mouth

Chapter 368: Chapter 361: Escape from the Tiger’s Mouth

"Are you all right, little elf?" Yalunte fiercely pulled out his long sword, and in an instant, the adventurer fell stiffly to the ground.

"Right on time, retreat quickly!" Seeing Yalunte by his side, Luo’er finally felt some relief.

Yalunte abruptly turned around and swung his sword, slicing an adventurer attempting to ambush him into two. His sword from Earth, engineered with the most advanced technology, was unmatched in durability and sharpness by any weapon of Otherworld.

"We’ve fallen into an ambush?" Yalunte shook off the blood on his sword and turned his gaze to Luo’er.

"Yes," Luo’er nodded, glancing at the overturned carriage in the distance, he stated grimly, "That guy used him as bait to lure us into an ambush!"

"Not so simple, is it!" Yalunte followed Luo’er’s gaze and couldn’t help but display a cold smirk.

"We need to retreat quickly, Mr. Yalunte, to the predetermined evacuation point!" Luo’er reloaded his clip and instructed him.

"You go, I’ll cover you," Yalunte waved his hand, "I can handle these people, so you don’t need to worry about me!"

"Watch out for yourself then!" Although Luo’er was concerned about Yalunte, since he had already made his decision, Luo’er had no choice but to let him proceed.

The advance team still exchanged fire while retreating. Although these attackers had anticipated the team’s movements, they had underestimated their combat prowess. Despite being only a ten-person squad, their firepower was sufficient to suppress the assault of dozens of men.

Furthermore, the mercenaries they had sent were of varying ability, forcing them into a defensive position against the advance team. Even though it seemed they had ambushed the advance team, the overall combat situation felt more like the advance team was suppressing them, all while continuously retreating.

It was as if a group of primitive people wielding sticks attempted to surround and kill a vicious beast.

Nevertheless, the advance team was still in a disadvantaged position. Not to mention the attackers outside the city, a large number of soldiers were now flooding out from within the city. No matter how advanced the advance team’s equipment was, they were no match for such a large number of people.

In the modern special operations system, the task of special forces is not to fight against the regular army. The advance team may be able to hold down the disparate attackers, but once they meet the well-equipped troops in the city, they can only be chased and suppressed.

Right now, the advance team’s mission is to break away from the joint siege by both sides and escape from the pocket formation they’ve arranged. For Luo’er, ensuring the safe retreat of every member was his foremost concern, as the capture of even a single member would be seen as his negligence.

Luckily, despite being inexperienced, the Murong squad proved to be competent soldiers. Their actions amidst this peril brought a wave of reassurance to Luo’er.

Beneath the cover of alternating gunfire, the advance team’s main attacking group gradually broke away from the encirclement and began to slowly retreat towards the planned evacuation point.

The soldiers at the city gates, disrupted by Cheng Ziang, finally regrouped and charged towards them ferociously. These were not forces the advance team could handle, with their semi-automatic weapons and rune armors being headaches for the team alone.

While the rune armor of these soldiers was not as refined as those of the elite troops, it still had a certain resilient ability. At least, against them, handguns and submachine guns were practically useless.

Yalunte, making use of the complex terrain of the jungle, slaughtered several more attackers. He tested the weapon from Earth, finding its strength and sharpness were better than any weapon he had used before. Backed by his powerful arm strength, he could even cut through a tree trunk as thick as a bowl with one slash.

Luo’er and the others slowly retreated under the alternating cover fire to the place where Murong and his team had previously halted. On seeing the enormous tree, Xuzhong Qi had an idea.

"Captain, cover me!" he unusually raised his voice while replacing his rifle behind him and took out a bomb from his waist.

"I understand!" Even though Luo’er didn’t know what Xuzhong Qi was planning, he agreed to his request and continued to provide cover fire for him.

Xuzhong Qi estimated the thickness and height of the tree, adjusted the quantity of explosives based on the calculated direction of the fall. This Otherworld has no electric detonators, forcing him to estimate the rate at which the fuse would burn.

After wrapping the base of the trunk with explosives, he attached a detonator to the fuse and inserted it into the explosive.

Upon completing all this, he lit the fuse and, holding his rifle high, shouted at Luo’er, "Captain, retreat! Retreat! Retreat!"

"Understood!" Luo’er fired two consecutive shots and then turned and ran.

As the explosives expert in Murong Squad, Xuzhong Qi’s calculations were spot on. Just as the attackers reached the targeted tree, the detonation of his explosive caused sawdust to fly everywhere, with those near the blast point being blasted off.

Immediately after, the tall tree, its base now shattered, began to slowly tip over. It collapsed precisely at the right position, completely separating the Advance Team from the attackers, ensuring ample time for their retreat.

"Nice one, Old Xu!" Witnessing the scenario, Hu Daoke couldn’t help but give a thumbs up in commendation.

Cheng Ziang once again took out two smoke grenades, pulling out the pin and tossing them behind him. Thick smoke quickly engulfed his figure.

"Next!" Seeing the situation, Hu Daoke took out a grenade from his pocket and threw it to Cheng.

He pulled out the pin then tossed it backward. The grenade exploded directly within the smokescreen, knocking a few soldiers to the ground. Others hesitated at the sight of the rolling smoke and dared not proceed.

Unable to pursue, these soldiers began firing wildly into the smoke. Most of them were armed with semi-automatic weaponry, thus presenting a fierce resistance that the Advance Team could not withstand.

Under this extensive cover, the group finally managed to regroup and began their frenzied retreat. For Luo’er and his team, they had lost count of the number of times they had to beat a hasty retreat. Success wasn’t guaranteed with each mission of the Advance Team, and a failure meant retreat. To Luo’er, surviving each such retreat was considered fortunate.

They began to run along the river followed by mounting their prepared horses, continuing with the retreat. Their actions outside Holy Heart City led to a massive stir, with many troops quickly dispatched to pursue them. The further they distanced themselves from this place, the better chances they had of not getting caught.

Finally reaching the inn where their horses were tied, Luo’er noticed that the city’s guards had somehow caught up to them and were combing the area. A skirmish broke out as the soldiers noticed something odd with the Advance Team.

Having the advantage of striking first, the Advance Team quickly subdued most of the soldiers, however, the gunfire attracted nearby guards. Thus, they had to abandon horseback and continue escaping on foot.

Zhuanzhu, trailing at the rear, looked at the scrambling group and couldn’t help shaking his head, muttering angrily, "How disgraceful."

In stark contrast to Zhuanzhu’s discomfort was Hu Daoke, calm as ever. Wu Tairan, who stood beside him, asked in disbelief: "Is this how you guys usually carry out missions?"

"Pretty much, eighty percent of the time rushing to the location, fifteen percent escaping, and five percent fighting." Hu Daoke replied nonchalantly, well accustomed to their turbulent retreats.

Having run more than ten kilometers, the group finally got an opportunity to catch their breath. They were so worn that they had to pause and rest a while.

However, they were still not safe. The enemy foot soldiers might not catch up instantly, but their cavalry was not to be underestimated. After a short rest, they had to go on the move again.

To Luo’er’s relief, despite the chaotic battle, everyone had safely retreated. Upon inspection, he found that quite a few of them had been hit by bullets. Fortunately, the bullet-proof plates they carried deflected the bullets, preventing any casualties.

Just as everyone was taking a breather, a convoy appeared from afar. Baiyue, who was keeping vigil, noticed the convoy, making everyone tense.

"Looks like it’s from the Church Court." Baiyue peered with her binoculars and informed the rest.

"If it’s from the Church Court, we should be fine, considering how well we know each other now," Hu Daoke, said sitting on the ground, sounding both tired and sarcastic.

"Forget it, don’t bother with them. Let’s move on!" Luo’er commanded, signaling for the team to prepare to move.

Their relationship with the Church Court was not hostile, but it was hardly friendly either. Given that they were enemies once, even fighting over Arya’s Blade, Luo’er could only hope it wasn’t the Judgment Legion. If it was, they wouldn’t let him go easily.

As the convoy approached, the knights on horseback eyed the disheveled group suspiciously but made no further decisive moves. Just as Luo’er was getting ready to leave, a familiar voice came from behind, "Luo’er!"

Recognizing the voice, Luo’er stopped in his tracks and turned around. A young girl poked her head out of the carriage and when she noticed Luo’er, her face lit up with delight.

"Feliz, what a coincidence!" Luo’er greeted, surprised to run into Feliz in such a place.

Ignoring the wobbly carriage, Feliz, in her now more lady-like dress manners, slipped out and started to briskly walk over to him in her elegant attire, showing her true aristocratic demeanor.

"What are you doing here?" Feliz asked, rushing over to Luo’er and looking at him excitedly.
