Chapter 352 - 345: Leaving the Battlefield
Chapter 352: Chapter 345: Leaving the Battlefield
With some apprehension, Yalunte looked at him and then gingerly climbed up from the ground. Having witnessed first-hand the prowess of these metal monsters, he dared not disrespect them, even as a Sword Saint. His years of wandering the Otherworld Continent had taught him that a wise man possesses the ability to bend and yield. He knew when it was time to bow his head.
"Identify yourself!" The drone continued to utter emotionless, mechanical synthetic sounds, and began to scan him from top to bottom.
"Yalunte Burlingchi, Otherworlder, informant for the front line headquarter at the Otherworld!" Cheng Ziang said, sounding somewhat breathless. He was not sure whether this artificial intelligence would recognise Yalunte.
"Identity input, denied! No matching information found," Suddenly, the drone emitted a red warning light, and the coldness in its voice intensified, "Please raise your hands and stay where you are, or you will be deemed to be engaging in hostile behavior."
"Wait, wait, get in touch with the Otherworld General Staff Headquarters to confirm his identity!" Cheng Ziang startled by the drone’s response. Although the drone had instructed Yalunte to raise his hands, Cheng Ziang was the one who had instinctively raised his hands while frantically speaking out.
"Contacting the Otherworld General Staff Headquarters, please wait..." The red light on the drone stopped flashing, offering some comfort to Cheng Ziang’s anxious heart.
"What is it saying?" Yalunte, who could not understand their Chinese conversation, asked curiously.
"Raise your hands and hold still. Don’t make any rash actions. This thing is not easy to deal with!" Cheng Ziang responded without looking back.
"Is it alive?" Yalunte, though doing as instructed, couldn’t help but ask.
"It would take too long to explain right now, just do as it asks and stay still," Cheng Ziang advised with a sigh.
"Incoming communication request from headquarters, initiating holographic projection!" Suddenly, a 3D projection began to appear before the drone. Soon after, a man in a military uniform appeared in the projection.
"Identify yourself!" The man spoke calm but with an inherent touch of authority that left Cheng Ziang hardly daring to breathe heavily in his presence.
He, of course, recognized the man--it was Lin Wei, the Chief of Otherworld General Staff Headquarters, responsible for all matters related to the Otherworld.
"Advance Team member from the front line headquarters, Cheng Ziang. This is Yalunte, an informant from the Aud race for the headquarters," Cheng Ziang said, his voice somewhat shaky.
Lin Wei naturally knew who Cheng Ziang was but was just going through the motions. After hearing Cheng’s words, Lin Wei sighed softly, and then asked with a frown, "How did you end up on Earth?"
"The armies of Odelanqi, Masya, and Oudallo have gathered to open the otherworld gate here. We came to deliver information," Cheng Ziang said urgently.
"What information?" Lin Wei asked.
"These Otherworld soldiers carry genetic weapons targeting the East Asian race. We suggest that a bio-chemical defense team should intervene immediately," Cheng Ziang declared loudly.
Upon hearing his words, Lin Wei’s face instinctively froze, however, he maintained the dignity of a top leader: "Are you sure about the reliability of this information?"
"Yes, Luo’er and the others are trying to close the Otherworld Gate," said Cheng Ziang, turning to look at the Otherworld Gate that had taken on the form of a door frame. With worry in his voice, he added, "It looks like they must have succeeded. I just don’t know how they are doing now."
Lin Wei assessed the battlefield situation through the drone’s view. At this point, the battlefield was already rife with bodies, rivers of blood flowing. The invading soldiers had been hit hard, dying under the fire of these monstrous machines before they even saw the enemy.
Just moments ago, he had also received an intelligence report from the front line command confirming the existence of genetic weapons. With Luo’er involved, Lin Wei never doubted the authenticity of the intelligence.
If these Otherworld soldiers are indeed carriers of genetic weapon viruses, it would mean that closing Otherworld Gate was the only choice. At the first appearance of the Otherworld Gate, Lin Wei’s instinctive reaction was to reclaim it for their own use. However, their potential opponents, unwilling to play into their hands, had stooped to using genetic weapons to ruin their plans.
The entire battlefield had become a virus zone, much like a nuclear leak’s central area, and the guard troops had already retreated a few kilometers, awaiting the arrival of the bio-chemical defense team. Even so, the drones and armored robots had successfully taken control of the battlefield situation. Against the lightly armed Otherworld soldiers, these mechanized troops demonstrated tremendous power.
"Regardless, for now, follow the guidance of the drone to vacate this area and wait for the arrival of the bio-chemical defense team and medical personnel," Lin Wei ordered with a furrowed brow, after taking some time to think.
Although Cheng Ziang was from the Otherworld, a part of his genes still came from the East Asian race. Therefore, he was still considered a non-human race. Because of this, he could very well become a target for the genetic weapons.
"And him..." Cheng Ziang looked at Yalunte uncertainly and asked.
"P4757, authorized to import the Yalunte·Brunchis file into the identification database and reactivate identity verification!" Lin Wei ordered the drone.
"Received, importing into the identification database... import successful, conducting identity verification... verification completed, target Yalunte·Brunchis, frontline headquarters informant, has been granted passage, unmanned armored robots will set him as a friendly target!"
With the series of synthesized sounds from the drone, the red light in front of the two armored robots pointing at Yalunte finally turned green, meaning they had recognized him as an ally. Subsequently, they continued to swivel their gun barrels, aiming at others.
"That scared me." Hearing the drone’s words, Cheng Ziang finally breathed a sigh of relief and lowered his raised hands.
"Is it all over?" Yalunte tried to lower his hands while curiously asking.
"It’s over, you’re safe now!" Cheng Ziang declared.
"Feels like I’m dreaming..." Yalunte looked at these drones and armored robots. The sky was brimming with drones, firmly controlling the situation on the entire battlefield. On the ground, the armored robots, each the size of a bull, vigilantly watched every Otherworld soldier attempting to counterattack.
"Let’s go, they won’t attack us anymore." Cheng Ziang beckoned Yalunte to step over the corpses and head toward the perimeter.
"They won’t attack us right?" Yalunte asked, still worried.
"Don’t worry, these things need the highest authorization to kill!" Cheng Ziang said, pushing away a drone obstructing his path. The drone swayed a few times but quickly regained its stable flight stance, showing no anger due to his actions.
Although these drones and armored robots are equipped with artificial intelligence, the final attack command still rests in the hands of their operators behind them. Opening fire by armored robots requires the operator’s instruction. Humans on Earth instinctively display a distrust towards artificial intelligence.
Seeing Cheng Ziang’s actions, Yalunte became bolder. Unlike Cheng Ziang, Yalunte is from the Otherworld and hence, not a target of genetic weapons. Therefore, he leisurely looked around the battlefield littered with bodies, studying the drones, and touching the metal armor on the robots.
"You really need to get moving! Get out of here!" Seeing him perk up, Cheng Ziang couldn’t help but roll his eyes and urged him on.
In contrast to Yalunte’s calmness, Cheng Ziang was afraid of the viruses on these people, he did not even dare to step on the blood on the ground, fearing becoming a target for genetic weapons.
After taking a few steps, facing the chaotic and bloody battlefield, Cheng Ziang felt overwhelmed. So, he walked up to an armored robot and rode it directly.
This armored robot has a caterpillar design, and it also has spots for soldiers to mount. Cheng Ziang climbed onboard and commanded, "Take me out, I am afraid I will be infected."
The armored robot has no voice system, so it couldn’t respond. Its actions while manoeuvring the caterpillar tracks were somehow endearing in its contrast.
"Received, WZ-0034 has received the order to transport soldiers and is currently transporting the target out of the battlefield!" The drone that was pushed aside by Cheng Ziang responded.
"Wow, can I also climb up?" Watching the brazen scene, Yalunte couldn’t help but feel excited.
"Get on, let it take us out!" Cheng Ziang nonchalantly said, seemingly unimpressed by the sight.
"It won’t attack me, will it?" Yalunte hesitated to ask.
"You have already been granted passage, even if you disassemble it, it won’t retaliate." Cheng Ziang shrugged.
"Oh, in that case, I’ll do just that!" Yalunte declared, and hurriedly climbed up, completely devoid of the solemnity an elder should have.
Once they were atop the robot, it began to transport them away from the battlefield. Although the terrain was rocky, the ride was incredibly stable. This was probably due to its excellent suspension system.
When they slowly reached the periphery, Cheng Ziang could finally see the standing troops at home base. These soldiers were wearing fully enclosed helmets and exoskeleton systems. Meanwhile, the decontamination troops had also arrived on the battlefield and begun erecting a quarantine zone, isolating the entire battlefield.
Once they arrived at the quarantine zone, they were required to strip off their clothes for disinfection and medical check-ups. Cheng Ziang was quite used to these things, but Yalunte was somewhat reserved. It was unclear how long he hasn’t bathed for, being disinfected felt like shedding a layer of skin. He appeared much whiter all of a sudden.
Then, both of them were escorted to the quarantine room to wait for further observation. Only after it was confirmed that they did not carry any viruses were they allowed to leave. During the quarantine period, the doctors gave Yalunte suppressive agents to relieve him of the discomfort caused by the absence of magic power on Earth.
