Chapter 345: Chapter 338: Blocking Battle
With the activation of two large Forbidden Curse-level spells, the soldiers on the square of the Otherworld Gate had begun to grow restless. Most of them did not possess the ability to sense magic, but they all seemed to simultaneously feel a sense of heaviness, as if they were being enveloped by something.
The civilian mages had noticed the gathering of magic energy on the distant city wall, and their gasps of astonishment had drawn everyone’s attention.
Fu’en looked at the cluster of magical energy forming in the mid-air, his face instantly became pale. He understood what that cluster of magic energy indicated and he understood what those people planned to do. He tried to alert his mages to attack the city wall, but every mage was well aware of the implications of the floating magic cluster, so no one dared to move forward.
Fu’en, helpless, called on officers to lead the soldiers to get rid of those troublemakers. Unlike the mages, these officers had no knowledge of the danger that the magic cluster posed, so they unhesitatingly commanded their soldiers to kill in the direction of the city wall.
"They’re coming!" Luo’er yelled, he released the safety catch and readied his rifle, at the same time, he tossed another short rifle with its safety on to Feliz who was hiding behind an embankment not far away.
Feliz accepted the rifle, she looked at the short barrel -- the thought of the recent massive gunfire made her feel a chill spreading from the bottom of her heart. She then clumsily stuck the earplugs that Luo’er had prepared for her into her ears.
Facing the sea of soldiers across the street, the first to open fire was Hu Daoke, who acted as the suppressing force. The RPK light machine gun in his hands looked like a magnified version of the AK47 rifle, even the magazines were interchangeable. However, compared to the AK rifle, the firepower of the RPK light machine gun was much fiercer.
"Da-da-da-da-da-da-da....."
Hu Daoke chose to fire in a flurry of rapid bursts, attacking the enemies while simultaneously breaking their psychological defenses.
The dense barrage swept into the crowd, and before the soldiers in the front row could react, their bodies were penetrated by bullets and they slumped into pools of blood. The brutal bullets, passing through their bodies, blew holes the size of fists and even managed to break and shatter their limbs. Within a moment, the crowded soldiers collapsed to the ground like a cut field of grass, their blood and flesh scattering.
Although these soldiers were equipped with modern firearms, even some had powerful automatic rifles, their tactics remained in the age of cold weapons. They didn’t know to scatter their formation in such a narrow street and this allowed Hu Daoke’s attack to cause twenty or thirty casualties. The street was instantly filled with blood, and the surviving soldiers lay in the blood-stained street, howling in pain.
It has to be said that Hu Daoke’s tactics indeed worked. The heavy rains of bullets and continuous gunshots led the soldiers to mistakenly believe that they were under attack by an army many times larger than themselves. Therefore, they disregarded the orders of their officers and ran away frantically. Some even left their guns on the ground.
The officers were furious. After shooting a few deserting soldiers, they finally managed to stabilize the formation. They then began to fire aimlessly towards the city wall, not knowing who was attacking them.
As hundreds of rifles shot towards the city wall, bullets bounced off the stone walls. Hu Daoke had originally thought that these people would quickly locate his position and attack, but their attack was ineffective. Therefore, he didn’t even move his position, instead lying comfortably behind the barricade, waiting for the enemy’s second wave of attacks.
Although these bullets were untargeted, the ricocheting bullets were troublesome. Luo’er even worried that they might be hit by a stray bullet instead of direct enemy fire.
It has to be said that the modern tactical literacy of these people was on par with the ragtag guerrilla fighters on Earth. However, at least those fighters had some tricks up their sleeves, unlike these people who didn’t even know what they were doing.
After a round of random fire, Fu’en, obviously not able to bear it any longer, had come to scold them. Meanwhile, several of his trusted mages had opened their defensive shields and advanced towards the end of the street.
Several mages simultaneously activated their physical defense shields, nervously leading the way. They had activated a third-level shield spell that could effectively resist direct machine gun fire. The soldiers followed closely behind them, still looking confused. Some of them didn’t even realize that they had already exhausted all the bullets in their rifles.
"Shit, they’ve got shields!" Hu Daoke couldn’t help cursing when he saw this.
He picked up the light machine gun and began to move his position. Arriving above Luo’er, he greeted him with a nod. Luo’er responded with a nod too, as he handed him two magic crystal grenades.
Hu Daoke moved agilely through the ruins of city blocks, a stark contrast to his bulky body. Jumping onto a high wall, he looked at the approaching troops in the distance. He then put down the machine gun, held a grenade in each hand, used his mouth to pull the pins, and threw them in front of the mages.
Seeing two cylindrical objects roll towards them, the leading mages instinctively panicked at first but then steadied their footing and began to slowly retreat. They were confident that their shield spell could withstand most physical attacks, yet they were unaware that the two grenades would cause something other than physical damage.
"Boom, boom!"
Accompanied by two loud noises, billowing flames instantly swallowed the front-row mages and soldiers. The magicians never expected that this small cylinder could explode with astonishing magic damage, so much so that they didn’t even have time to switch the form of their shields, and were directly broken by the magic attack, and the whole person was instantly engulfed in flames.
Several magicians and soldiers instantly turned into firemen, emitting harsh screams. Hu Daoke set up the light machine gun and directly launched another heavy fire at the soldiers nearby.
Another fierce sweep not only instantly knocked down more than ten soldiers but also killed several firemen engulfed by the flames. Suddenly, the attacking troops collapsed again, leaving only the burning bodies on the street.
However, Hu Daoke seemed to be overly prideful, getting too close to the enemy. Before he had time to feel proud, he saw a soldier from the rear lift an RPG rocket launcher and fire a rocket at the position where Hu Daoke was hiding.
With a loud noise, the rocket hit the ruined wall under Hu Daoke’s feet, and he unexpectedly rolled down from the wall. Then came the attack of a few more rockets, and instantly this piece of wreckage was pierced by rockets and began to collapse. Disregarding his injured butt, Hu Daoke embarrassingly fled with his machine gun.
Seeing Hu Daoke’s flashing figure, these soldiers finally reacted and started shooting while chasing him. Bullets whizzed past him, hitting stones and sparking off, making stones splash around. Occasionally, rockets flashed over his head and hit the distant city wall. Fortunately, the city walls were thick enough not to be directly shot down by the rockets.
"Cover him!" Luo’er shouted loudly, while sticking out from the cover, aiming at the soldiers chasing Hu Daoke and pulling the trigger. Although Feliz did not understand his words, she also raised her submachine gun and started shooting at the street in the distance after seeing him start shooting.
"Ratatat..." Dense bullet rain spilled into the distance, instantly suppressing the chasing soldiers. They all began looking for shelter, avoiding the concentrated gunfire.
Feliz didn’t have time to adapt to this recoil, so she was dragged by the butt of the gun, the muzzle floating directly upwards, fortunately, it did not slip from her hands.
Luo’er’s shooting was within his shooting range, and Hu Daoke hid outside his range, so there was no need to worry about friendly fire. However, Feliz was not aware of this, and she could not control the muzzle of the rifle at all. A row of bullets directly swept towards Hu Daoke, scaring him into lying on the ground, just in time to prevent his own people from bursting his head.
"Friendly hit, friendly hit!" Hu Daoke lay on the ground with his head in his hands, his butt raised high, and shouted hoarsely.
"Feliz, cease fire, cease fire, you hit our own!" Hearing his calls, Luo’er hurriedly stopped shooting, while anxiously calling Feliz.
The bullets hit the stones next to Hu Daoke directly, and he could even hear the humming sound of the bullets being deflected, scaring him into cold sweats.
Fortunately, Feliz did not know how to control the shooting speed of the rifle. In a few seconds, she fired all the bullets. Seeing her at a loss, Luo’er finally breathed a sigh of relief, and felt a lingering fear. It seemed that never again should novices be allowed to participate in combat, because it was too dangerous.
The soldiers began to find their shooting rhythm. After a few of them died, they went into shooting mode, hiding behind the cover and constantly shooting at Luo’er and his compatriots, while calling their comrades to advance under their cover.
"Little Ke, get up quickly if nothing’s wrong, they’re attacking!" Luo’er loaded a new magazine, then loudly shouted to Hu Daoke urgently.
"Got it!" Hu Daoke lifted his head and looked at Feliz with lingering fear. Then he grabbed the light machine gun and rolled to a corner, starting to climb the wall to the shooting point he had previously set.
The shooting of dozens of rifles on the opponent’s side made Luo’er unable to lift his head, and Feliz curled up behind the cover with her head in her hands. Knowing that she didn’t even know how to change the magazine, Luo’er knew that she was unreliable.
He took a smoke grenade out of his pocket, and then threw it out directly from behind the cover. The smoke grenade instantly erupted with thick smoke, instantly isolating them from the soldiers on the other side.
"Hurry up!" Hiding behind the cover with his rifle, Luo’er looked at the huge magic cluster above his head and began to silently pray to himself.
He knew that they could not resist the attack of so many people, and now they can only delay time. As for what would happen next, he hadn’t thought about it at all.
