Chapter 213: Chapter 206: Falling into the Abyss_1

Luo Chuan had no idea how long he had been falling. All he knew was that his limbs had grown numb. He had initially thought of jumping while holding onto Nina, but now it seemed that if he had done so, he would have let go out of fear.

On the other hand, Nina seemed really calm, clutching Luo Chuan’s waist with both hands, her body tightly pressing against his back. Suddenly, he heard a faint murmur in his ear from Nina, but it was in a language he didn’t understand.

Immediately after, Luo Chuan felt as if their plummeting speed had surprisingly slowed down. The waterfall that had been relatively still compared to their fall was now pouring onto him, causing him to gulp down a few mouthfuls of water.

Unsure of how much time had passed, it felt as though they had been falling for a century. The two of them finally crashed heavily into the pool, being dragged straight to the bottom by the massive impact.

As they hit the water with their backs first and Nina was at Luo Chuan’s back, she bore the brunt of the impact before hitting the water. As they sank to the bottom of the deep pool, Luo Chuan felt as though they were sinking straight to the bottom like a massive stone. He could even feel the person behind him being harshly knocked by the rocks below.

Before Luo Chuan could react, Nina behind him let go, being carried away by the surging undercurrent. When he turned around, he could clearly see blood oozing from her head, being carried away by the water current.

Instinctively, Luo Chuan reached out to grab Nina but the raging undercurrent swept him away from her, their distance growing ever further. He wanted to swim over to grab her, but he was running out of oxygen, forcing him to resurface.

Using the last bit of energy, Luo Chuan surfaced right before everything turned black, breathing heavily, and then started swimming towards the shore.

After climbing up the pebble covered shore with difficulty, Luo Chuan strained to remove the straps of the rifle, as well as the bulletproof helmet and vest. It was these things that almost prevented him from reaching the shore.

Having removed those items, Luo Chuan was about to go back into the water to save Nina. However, his body collapsed onto the shore — he was unable to move. It was then he realised, the effects of the adrenaline he had injected into himself had worn off. Adrenaline had allowed him to get out of discomfort, making him spend all his strength in advance. He simply wanted to close his eyes and rest for a while. Although his mind was focused on saving Nina, his eyelids slowly closed.

In a daze, Luo Chuan had a peaceful and comforting dream. He dreamt that both he and Nina had arrived on Earth, and they had held a grand wedding. Nina was pregnant with his child. They were snuggled up intimately together, receiving blessings from his father Luo Qishan and his comrades.

Luo Chuan was awakened by a painful sensation. When he woke up, the sky had already turned bright. High cliffs surrounded him, the waterfall poured into the pool, making a deafening noise.

He struggled to get up from the shore. His body ached due to the uneven pebbles. Looking at the waterfall in front of him, Luo Chuan suddenly remembered the elf girl Nina who had fallen with him. They had lost contact in the water, and he didn’t know whether she had been washed away by the river.

Luo Chuan moved his body slightly, then put on his vest, carried his rifle on his back, and tied his helmet around his waist. Despite the slim hope, Luo Chuan still wished to find Nina, even if only her corpse.

With this thought, Luo Chuan started walking downstream along the riverside at the bottom of the ravine. He and Nina fell into the water together, so searching along the river would be the best way to find any trace of her. Of course, he also hoped to find a way out of here along the river and return to the Otherworld Gate.

He looked up at the cliffs surrounding him, then glanced at the waterfall again. He wondered what the Beastman would do when he saw them fall into the canyon. They had probably returned to finish cleaning up the battlefield.

Although the canyon was deep, the noon sun still shone directly into it. Walking on the uneven shore, Luo Chuan’s clothes had already dried in the sun. He checked the rifle on his shoulder; it just had some water in it, which would not interfere with its use. After pouring out the water inside the rifle, he unlocked the safety.

The river meandered along the bottom of the canyon. The terrain of the canyon was relatively flat, so the river wasn’t rough. After walking a distance of about two kilometers along the riverbank, Luo Chuan was dazzled by a glint of light. He shielded his eyes and saw a bundle of golden objects at the bend of the river. If he wasn’t mistaken, that should be Nina. The reflection was from her exquisite and gorgeous armor.

Being able to find Nina, Luo Chuan was delighted. He ran over the uneven pebbles and came to the bend. He saw Nina lying on her back by the river, her eyes tightly closed, lips pale, and her feet still soaked in the water, drifting with the current.

Seeing this, Luo Chuan hurriedly came to Nina’s side and sighed in relief when he saw her chest slightly moving. Although she looked very pale, she was still alive for now.

Luo Chuan bent down to drag her from the shore to the gravel ground. Nina’s back of the head had been smashed leaving a large hole; a considerable amount of blood, clotted like tofu, had gathered there because it had not been exposed to the sun.

Luo Chuan checked her condition; fortunately, her skull had not been penetrated. It was just some skin injuries, but he couldn’t ascertain whether she suffered from a concussion.

After assessing her injuries, Luo Chuan took out the first-aid kit he carried with him and began dressing her wound. Nina’s hair was soft; it kept slipping through his fingers as he was bandaging her. Although his mind was primarily focused on her, Luo Chuan could not help but feel a sway of emotions.

Having addressed the wound on her head, Luo Chuan continued his examination of her body. It was then he noticed the large hole in Nina’s shoulder armor. Remembering this hole, Luo Chuan suddenly recalled their previous skirmish where Nina had shot him with an arrow, and he, in return, had shot her in the shoulder.

With this in mind, Luo Chuan felt torn. He pondered whether to treat the wound on her shoulder, which would require him to remove her armor. Even though he had no objection to this, he felt it would be ungentlemanly to take advantage of her vulnerability.

However, if he waited for her to wake up and attend to herself, the wound would likely have festered by then — potentially leading to more serious complications. Presently, they were both stuck in the bottom of the valley, without any immediate access to medicinal supplies to treat her injury. The situation could become extremely troublesome if it came to that.

Luo Chuan resolved to take action. Constantly reminding himself of the urgent situation, he painstakingly removed Nina’s armor.

After removing the cumbersome armor, revealing her simple yet fitting underdress, Luo Chuan lifted the cloth on her shoulder. He discovered a gaping bloody hole on her smooth, fair shoulder.

He looked at Nina, her eyes still tightly shut, her lips tightly pressed together and pale. Luo Chuan reached out to inspect the injury; the bullet had pierced through her shoulder, leaving two large bloody holes.

Fortunately, the bullet did not lodge inside her body which, while still problematic, was not as severe as it could have been. After minor treatment followed by some bandaging, she should be fine. Luo Chuan took out the last of his alcohol and dripped it on the wound. Despite still being unconscious, Nina’s body suffered a violent twitch, eliciting a low whimper from her throat.

"It’s ok, everything will be fine," Luo Chuan soothed her as he bandaged her, looking at the furrows on her forehead formed by the intense pain. He had no idea if she understood him, but after his words, Nina eventually stopped twitching.

After treating her wound, Luo Chuan fastened her clothes again and placed her chest plate over her face to protect her eyes from direct sunlight.

Looking at the unconscious Nina, Luo Chuan sighed, contemplating the path ahead. Initially, he had thought that Nina had drowned. While this would have been sad, after laying her body to rest, he would have been able to find a route out of the canyon to return to the surface.

Now that Nina was alive, he could not abandon her. Despite being enemies before, they now owed each other their lives. Luo Chuan was not an ungrateful man; he remembered feeling the downward trajectory of his fall lightening just as he was about to hit the bottom of the lake - all while Nina was muttering something incomprehensible.

If his guess was correct, Nina was likely using magic in those moments. Magic was a unique system in Otherworld. One could channel magic power through their body and create corresponding attacks based on different spells. He figured their position was breached by Otherworld Cavalry, most likely due to involvement of magic.

Since Nina was still unconscious, the only option now was to find a shelter and settle down, to wait for her to wake up.

After deciding the next step, Luo Chuan hoisted Nina onto his back, preparing to find a place to rest. Although Nina was half a head taller than him, her body was light. Luo Chuan could easily carry her, even with his bulletproof vest and rifle. However, he was glad he didn’t have to carry her along with the armor - that would have been truly backbreaking.

Leaving the bend, Luo Chuan carried Nina to a small hillock. Going up the slope revealed an earthen flatland. This seemed to be the narrowest part of the canyon, with the flatland joining the canyon’s overhanging cliff. Instead of falling vertically, the cliff protruded upward to form an arched canopy that would offer shelter from wind and rain.

The soil of the flatland was very dry, primarily because rainwater had difficulty reaching this area. Luo Chuan looked around. The highest point of the bulge was approximately five to six meters above the flatland, and if the sides were to be enclosed, it could serve as a dwelling place. With not only good lighting but also ventilation, it was indeed an optimal place to settle.
