Chapter 192: Chapter 188: Flying to the Sky
"Little Ke, Ziang, cut open the wire fence!" At Luo’er’s order, the two men squatted near the fence and started cutting the wire with pliers. Meanwhile, Baiyue conscientiously took out the mechanical camera and began photographing the inner part of the airfield.
"Luo’er, look, that airship is different from the others!" Tangmo seemed to have discovered a new continent, pointing at the distant parked airship.
"Indeed," Luo’er frowned, recognizing the model of the airship, "It’s a Four Beasts-class, the Xuanwu!"
"Damn, the Xuanwu? Where exactly?" Hu Daoke was about to stand up for a look when Cheng Ziang hit him on the head with the pliers.
"What are you doing?" Hu Daoke shouted in pain.
"Working, quit staring. Don’t you know we’re trying to escape!" Cheng Ziang glared at him, seeming exasperated.
Luo’er recognized the Xuanwu as he had seen the relevant data at the headquarters. After completing its validation work, the Xuanwu had been relieved of its additional supplementary armor and had been converted into an assault airship.
Though both the Four Beasts-class and the main High-peak class were essentially ground assault airships, the Xuanwu was also equipped with four transport planes and could accommodate over 300 ground troops in addition to the crew.
In contrast, High-peak class, being the main battle airship, was hardly ever used to carry ground troops. They were often responsible for the control of a three-dimensional area, while the control of the ground was entrusted to the ground troops carried by the ground assault airships.
It took a lot of effort for Hu Daoke and Cheng Ziang to cut open the wire fence. Their palms ached from the exertion. Once they had cut a big hole, the group trickled in and ran towards the aircraft parked far away on the tarmac.
As these aircraft had vertical take-off and landing capabilities, they were parked in close proximity to each other on the runway. They ran all the way to the hangar, where two aircraft were being serviced. Most of the aircraft here were transport planes of various models.
Seeing strangers rush in, the dwarf ground crew who were servicing the planes were stunned and just stared at them.
"Everyone down!" Luo’er shouted in Tasta language, and fearing they wouldn’t understand, he also made a lowering gesture with his hands.
Perhaps his gestures worked, as all the ground crew simultaneously covered their heads and lay on the ground. Clearly, they had receieved relevant training and knew how to behave when faced with the barrel of a gun.
"These planes are under repair and can’t be used!" Seeing the aircraft that had been stripped of their outer shells, exposing the rune patterns inside, Tangmo frowned and said.
"Check the ones on the runway, Little Ke, watch these guys!" said Luo’er, calling out to the rest to run to the tarmac.
A transport plane was currently parked on the tarmac. It had a weird appearance, somewhat like a tadpole, with a diamond-shaped cockpit and a large belly cabin. There were two propeller drive devices on either side of the fuselage. The side door of the belly cabin was a sliding door, and was open. The two girls climbed into the belly cabin, then made their way to the pilot’s seats.
It was a two-seater cockpit, custom made for the dwarves. So, the girls could just about sit in it. But if the tall and muscular men like Cheng Ziang or Hu Daoke, who were well over 1.8 meters, tried to get in, they would have to squat uncomfortably inside the cockpit.
The two girls did not hesitate to sit down as Luo’er and Cheng Ziang stood outside the aircraft on lookout.
"What do we do now?" Tangmo felt at a loss in the presence of the dense array of buttons and dashboard.
"I suppose this is the pilot’s seat, and you’re the co-pilot." Baiyue analysed after looking at the dwarf text on the buttons.
The cockpit glass of the aircraft was made up of bulletproof glass from Earth, which was impossible to produce, given Ronisca’s current industrial capabilities.
"The pedals should control the lift device and the lever should control the posture and direction of the plane. The start button should be... here!" Baiyue said to herself, flicking a button, leading to their feeling a sudden jolt and the aircraft starting to make a peculiar sound. Through the clear glass of the dashboard Tangmo saw, with surprise, the glowing runes inside.
"Lift!" Baiyue tried stepping on the pedal, causing the aircraft to start rising awkwardly.
"Start the engine!" She then lifted her head and pressed a button on the roof, causing the propellers on both sides to make a big noise and start rotating.
"Magic Crystal energy 80%, we can take off. Inform everyone to get on board!" Baiyue checked the numbers on the dashboard and calmly informed Tangmo.
"Understood!" Tangmo nodded and then opened the bulletproof glass on the cockpit door half way and shouted to those outside, "Everyone on board, we’re ready to go!"
"Roger!" Luo’er shouted in response, then waved to Hu Daoke in the distance and covered him as he boarded the aircraft.
Tangmo turned and sat back in his seat, and suddenly a strange device in front of him popped out a piece of paper like a typewriter, covered in Dwarven writing.
"What does this mean?" Tangmo pulled out the paper, looking at the text and asked.
Baiyue glanced at it, then calmly said, "It’s an inquiry from the control center, asking us why we are taking off!" As she spoke, she glanced at the distant tower.
"Should we reply to them?" Tangmo asked, looking at her.
Baiyue didn’t answer, but instead gave him a look, and then started checking the instruments on the flying device by herself. Tangmo, realizing that he got no interest, obediently closed his mouth.
The position Tangmo was in was the communication position. The High-peak people’s communication device was a messenger invented with the inspiration from magic letters, somewhat similar to Earth’s telegrams, transmitting text but unable to transmit speech.
Unlike telegrams, this communication device, like magic letters, are both single-to-single communicators. That is, once the communication device in the corresponding tower of this flying device is damaged, it would essentially mean losing their connection.
Under the cover of the two men, Hu Daoke quickly sneaked into the belly of the plane. The space inside was not small, but the height was insufficient. He could only stay inside by slightly bending his waist.
After Hu Daoke boarded, Luo’er and Cheng Ziang also boarded the aircraft. Then, he walked to the back of the cockpit and shouted at Baiyue, "Take off, take off!"
"Received, all persons be on alert, close the cabin door, prepare for takeoff!"
With her signal, the aircraft’s cabin door was closed. Immediately, she stepped on the ascend pedal, and the aircraft began to shake and rise from the ground. Then, she pushed the propeller engine’s control rod halfway. The propeller made a noisy sound, its rotation speed getting faster and faster, and immediately the aircraft began to fly forward, speed increasing accordingly.
The aircraft was flying higher and higher. Tangmo, looking down through the bulletproof glass under her feet, saw that the people on the ground had turned into tiny ants. Suddenly, she saw something strange and her face turned ugly immediately. She pointed to that strange thing on the ground and said to Baiyue in a pale face: "Yue’er, anti-aircraft gun!"
Baiyue was stunned for a moment, then she lowered her head. There was an old-fashioned anti-aircraft gun on the ground below, aiming directly at them. And a few ant-sized High-peak people were running towards the anti-aircraft gun.
She bit her teeth and cursed, then pushed the output rod of the propeller engine to the top. Immediately, the aircraft boosted ahead forcefully. The sudden speed caused the three men in the rear cabin to stumble.
"Yay, we’re flying!" Hu Daoke, disregarding the pain, raised his hand and shouted joyfully.
The soldiers of the air force base started regaining their wits, rushing to open fire on them, but it was impossible to hit them. The aircraft rapidly reached the edge of the air force base. Baiyue stepped on the descending pedal, and the aircraft plunged down over the cliff, flying close to the mountain. This way, even if the anti-aircraft gun was impressive, it would be impossible to hit them.
On the other hand, Mooer, who was sitting in his office, kept receiving bad news. He intended to arrest Luo’er and his group, but ended up stirring up a hornet’s nest. Another disturbed squad had begun to fire at the city’s defence mobile forces.
According to the latest intelligence, in this conflict, at least five people have lost their lives and dozens had varying levels of injuries in the city’s defense mobile military corps. In addition, he received another piece of unfortunate news: an aircraft transport plane had been hijacked and taken off from Herlos base. The tower control had requested fighter planes to take off for interception.
Without a doubt, the hijackers were personnel dispatched by the Headquarters; otherwise, these foreigners couldn’t possibly be able to fly High-peak people’s aircraft.
The interception was essential. Mooer had already thought it through. He would dispatch two Skylark fighters for the interception and force them to stop. Then he would take an airship to arrest these people and bring them to Yazhi City to hand over to the Headquarters.
Although he had prepared for a compromise with Headquarters, being able to capture these people would undoubtedly add some bargaining chips to his negotiation and allow him to speak with more tenacity before the Headquarters.
As per his orders, two Skylark Fighters had taken off ten minutes ago. If nothing unexpected happened, they should soon capture these people. He was already prepared for his trip to Yazhi City.
Just as he was about to get up and head for the airship, an unexpected visitor came to his office. His brother, the eldest prince of Ronisca, Mu Lansi.
He and Mooer do not share the same mother, so his appearance is very different from Mooer. Of course, not only the appearance, but Mu Lansi’s character was also fundamentally different from Mooer.
Mu Lansi didn’t favor the military. During the Otherworld wars, he was originally supposed to be the commander of Ronisca’s army, but he refused this responsibility, allowing Mooer to get such a golden opportunity to prove himself.
Considering the circumstance back then, Mooer has always been grateful to Mu Lansi. Hence, even when Mu Lansi made some actions aiming to deteriorate the collaborative relationship with the Headquarters in the court, Mooer chose to comply with him. It was Mooer’s attitude that allowed Mu Lansi to gain a foothold in the palace.
He dictated the revival of the Ronisca Empire aimed at establishing a more equitable relationship with the Headquarters, and then counterattacked the Zhuyan national state Baales when the opportunity arrived, as revenge for their former exile.
