Chapter 1617: Chapter 1610: Persistent Investigation

Not everyone was pleased with such a lively ceremony; Huayu Rong was among those dissatisfied.

He looked down upon Huayu Ting with disdain and, while his heart burned with resentment, he was powerless to change anything and could only turn away to leave the scene.

He had not gone far from the crowd when someone grabbed him. Upon closer inspection, Huayu Rong realized it was Uncle Yu, the chief housekeeper of Bicheng Mansion.

Uncle Yu glanced towards Huayu Ting in the distance, then turned to Huayu Rong with a tense expression, gesturing for silence before leading him into a deserted corner.

"Uncle Yu, what is the meaning of this?" Huayu Rong asked politely, as he was, after all, looked after by Uncle Yu since a young age.

"Young Master..." After taking Huayu Rong to a secluded corner, Uncle Yu looked around nervously and then spoke to him with grave seriousness, "The Patriarch’s death was suspicious..."

"You think so, too, don’t you!" Huayu Rong felt as though he had found a confidant and excitedly grabbed Uncle Yu’s arm.

"Listen to me, Young Master," Uncle Yu paused, then earnestly continued, "The Patriarch’s death is intimately connected to the Second Young Master; I have reason to suspect that the Second Young Master murdered the Patriarch."

"Do you have evidence?" Huayu Rong widened his eyes and asked anxiously.

Then, Uncle Yu roughly outlined the events of that day to Huayu Rong, who listened with immense shock.

"Uncle Yu, are you saying that beast has spawned a child with someone from the Demon Clan. He killed to silence his father for fear of being exposed?" Huayu Rong asked, astonished.

"I can’t guarantee the truth, but the child does bear a striking resemblance to the Second Young Master," Uncle Yu said hesitantly.

"No need to think further, it must be his," Huayu Rong was indignant and cursed through gritted teeth, "That beast, to cover up his own despicable actions, dared to lay his hands on his father. He is even worse than a beast!"

"Young Master, this matter requires further investigation to gather more evidence. Pointing fingers at the Second Young Master without proof would anger the elders. You’ve seen it yourself, they all support him," Uncle Yu said soothingly.

"There’s no need for investigation; I will confront him myself," Huayu Rong said without hesitation.

"Young Master, that must not be done," Uncle Yu, terrified, hastily stopped him, "This cannot be handled rashly. If the Second Young Master is truly provoked, we may suffer the consequences, and then no one will ever know the truth."

"So, what should I do?" Huayu Rong pondered for a moment, then nodded in agreement.

"The Young Master must not act on your own. Allow me to approach the Second Young Master first in hopes of uncovering more valuable clues. The Second Young Master has his eyes on you, so it’s best to stay safe for the time being," Uncle Yu advised.

"How can I ’stay safe’," Huayu Rong exclaimed in outrage, "My father died under mysterious circumstances, and I, his son, am powerless to do anything. I might as well join my father in death."

As he spoke, he became more aggrieved until he could no longer hold back his sobs.

"Young Master, you are the young master of the Huayu Family, with free access in and out of Bicheng Mansion. You can investigate openly. I, on the other hand, will work in the shadows. We will gather clues simultaneously on two fronts. What do you think?" Uncle Yu suggested after some thought.

"That sounds perfect. As long as we can uncover the truth, I am willing to do anything," Huayu Rong said with fervent excitement.

"Alas," looking at his eager disposition, Uncle Yu sighed softly and said with a worried tone, "The Young Master should still tread lightly, or I have a feeling that something’s not right."

Thus, the two agreed to embark on a secret investigation targeting Huayu Ting.

Uncle Yu’s end was quite stable; as a shrewd housekeeper, he managed it so well that Huayu Ting had no clue that his son’s death was connected to him.

At this moment, Huayu Ting was gradually winning over the mansion’s trusted servants and planting his informants in the Nine Thousand Battalion, preparing to take full control of the Huayu Family.

In these efforts, Uncle Yu provided substantial help, earning Huayu Ting’s considerable gratitude, so he never suspected him but treated him like a trusted confidant.

In comparison to Uncle Yu’s smooth approach, Huayu Rong was somewhat clumsy. His investigation efforts were not entirely covert; they were rather transparent.

As a result, he failed to discover any leads; instead, he spread the rumor throughout the mansion that Huayu Ting had fathered a child with the Demon Clan.

After over a week of such turmoil, Huayu Ting could bear it no longer. He summoned Huayu Rong to his room and asked sternly, "Huayu Rong, what exactly are you trying to do? I treat you as my brother, yet you spread rumors about me everywhere."

"Whether it’s a rumor, you know best," Huayu Rong didn’t flinch but instead took a step forward and asked confidently, "I just want to ask you, how exactly did our father die? Did you secretly murder him?"

"Father hanged himself; the truth has long been crystal clear," Huayu Ting said coldly.

"Nonsense," Huayu Rong retorted loudly, "I know, you have an offspring with someone from the Demon Clan. Father found out about it, so you silenced him by committing murder, didn’t you!"

"Who told you that." Upon hearing this, Huayu Ting’s complexion immediately darkened.

"Who told me is irrelevant, I just want to know if it’s true or not," Huayu Rong glared at him and demanded.

"Why are you so obsessed with this matter?" Instead of answering his question, Huayu Ting took a deep breath and asked.

"Because that was my father, you beast!" Huayu Rong proclaimed self-righteously.

"Such filial piety, indeed laughable, haha..." Upon hearing Huayu Rong’s response, Huayu Ting let out a cold laugh.

"What are you laughing at? What do you mean?" Huayu Rong asked angrily.

"Do you really want to know the truth?" Huayu Ting asked, sidestepping the question.

"Of course!" Huayu Rong was resolute in his attitude.

"Alright," Huayu Ting nodded slightly.

"You’ve decided to come clean?" Huayu Rong asked, somewhat surprised, not expecting things could proceed so smoothly.

"Do you know of the Luo Yue Gathering? Walk two hundred li along the official road from Bicheng Mansion to the Luo Yue Gathering, and after seeing a fork in the forest, turn in and go another two li..." Huayu Ting said unhurriedly.

"What’s there?" Huayu Rong widened his eyes and asked.

"There, you will find the truth you seek," Huayu Ting paused, revealing an almost imperceptible cold sneer, and said lightly, "You better be quick though, or you might not find anything at all."

"Why can’t you tell me right now?" Huayu Rong asked, slightly on guard.

"Do you really want to know or not? If you do, then set off without delay. If you’re too late, you might not find anything," Huayu Ting said with a serious expression.

"You just wait!" Provoked by Huayu Ting’s goading, Huayu Rong immediately turned and ran out of the room.

Watching his retreating back, Huayu Ting watched expressionlessly. Finally, a cruel cold smile appeared at the corners of his mouth.

Huayu Rong left in a hurry, without the time to even greet Uncle Yu or exchange information, grabbing only two followers before rushing out the door.

They rode along the official road for a full day, only reaching the spot indicated by Huayu Ting at nightfall. The location was a clearing within the forest, surrounded by desolation with nothing in sight.

Huayu Rong and his followers lit up torches, and then one of the followers suddenly exclaimed, "Young Master, look, what is that?"

Following his direction, Huayu Rong saw a new grave covered with leaves, but judging by the freshness of the soil, it couldn’t have been buried for more than a month.

Huayu Rong dismounted and slowly walked to the front of the new grave, where a simple wooden tombstone was placed, engraved with a line of characters.

"This is..." Huayu Rong was illiterate, so he could only have a follower come over to read it.

The follower leaned in, and reading by the light of the torch, said word by word, "The tomb of the beloved son, Huayu Yun... erected by father Huayu Ting..."

"Huayu Ting, Second Young Master, no no, the Patriarch!" The follower exclaimed in shock, stumbling backwards.

He had only taken two steps back when all three felt a surge of Qi Force. The retreating follower was abruptly torn in half without any warning, unable to even emit a scream.

Subsequently, the other follower fell straight to the ground as well, his head somehow separating from his neck and falling to the ground. As it rolled away, he still wore an expression of shock, utterly unaware of what had just occurred.

"Two unlucky fellows, you could have just come by yourself; why let these two accompany you in death?" A cold yet familiar voice came from the dark depths of the forest.

Huayu Rong’s eyes widened in alarm, and as the figure of the newcomer became clear, it turned out to be the current Patriarch, Huayu Ting.
