Chapter 1562: Chapter 1555: Mysterious Girl
Accompanied by Feng and two attendants, Cheng Ziang once again took to the streets. It was already afternoon, but the streets were still bustling with noise and excitement. This was understandable, after all, the population of Lingyun City had expanded to the extent that it required the surrounding areas to accommodate the growth. Naturally, it couldn’t be as desolate as the West Outer Heaven or Fengyu.
As Cheng Ziang walked on the street, he pondered over the various incidents that happened today, only diverting a fraction of his attention to watching his step. Nevertheless, he inevitably collided with someone, an instance of what one might call ’a warm jade embrace.’
The young woman he bumped into let out a delicate cry, took a step back, and glared at him dissatisfied, with an angry look on her face.
"Don’t you look where you’re going?" Before Cheng Ziang had a chance to apologize, the girl launched her offensive first.
"I’m sorry, it was my negligence," Cheng Ziang said, yet a hint of doubt crept into his heart.
To know, though he was only partially focusing on walking, it shouldn’t have resulted in a full embrace upon colliding with someone. The young woman seemed to appear out of nowhere, neither Feng nor the two attendants gave him any warning before the collision occurred.
Recalling the moment of the collision, Cheng Ziang’s heart tightened, and he immediately thought of a similar scenario, thus he grabbed the young woman’s wrist in one swift gesture.
"What are you doing, trying to take liberties with me?" The young woman’s wrist ached from his grip; she looked at him with wide, timid eyes and voiced a meek protest.
Cheng Ziang didn’t speak, instead, he just stared intently at the young woman. She had a relatively beautiful face with a skin complexion that was pale with rosy undertones. Her appearance wasn’t particularly stunning but possessed a unique charm, one that was pleasing to look at over time.
What made Cheng Ziang pay the most attention were her bright eyes, which were unforgettable. Just by staring at her, one would be involuntarily attracted by her gaze.
Her lips were thin and plump with a light cherry red hue, it was uncertain whether it was naturally occurring or purposefully applied, but it was part of her allure nonetheless.
It was the allure of her eyes and lips that instinctively made one overlook her fair but not extraordinary beauty, focusing solely on her eyes gave one an overwhelming sense of amazement.
The young woman was dressed in the traditional attire of Kyushu, in a plain greenish-white that hinted at a touch of pale yellow. On her waist hung two peculiar trinkets tied together with a red string.
One trinket appeared to be a sachet, but even up close, there was no fragrance to be detected, only the faint smell of herbal smoke, suggesting it was merely for decoration.
The other trinket was more interesting, resembling two bamboo slats tied together with a red string tightly binding them. Below the bamboo slats dangled two hollow metallic pendants. Whenever the young woman moved, these hollow pendants would collide and chime with a tinkling sound.
In theory, with such a noticeable bell sound on the girl, Cheng Ziang should have been aware of her presence no matter what. Strangely, he had inexplicably overlooked it until he collided with her and noticed the bells.
"Have we met before?" Cheng Ziang asked seriously.
"What nonsense are you spouting, you weirdo with a mask." The young woman struggled fiercely, her brow furrowed and voice timid as she threatened, "Let go or I will call for help!"
"I apologize, I was rude," Cheng Ziang promptly released her upon hearing her words.
"Rude fellow, you foreigners," the girl muttered as she rubbed her wrist.
"How did you know I’m a foreigner?" Cheng Ziang asked curiously.
"If a person from Kyushu or the Shanyue people would be sporting a mask of the Ghost Race and wandering the streets, of course, I’d notice you from a mile away," the young woman said, with an irritated expression.
"If you noticed us from the start, why did you deliberately bump into me?" Cheng Ziang asked warily.
"Hey, can you not be so suspicious all the time?" The young woman got angry and put her hands on her hips as she retorted, "I just wanted to get a closer look; had no idea you’d be walking so fast, and to top it off, not even watching where you’re going, rushing straight at me."
"So, should I apologize to you then?" Cheng Ziang asked expressionlessly.
"Shouldn’t you?" The young woman, with her hands on her hips, demanded aggressively.
After listening to her words, Cheng Ziang stared at her intensely. After remaining silent for a while, he finally lowered his proud head, nodded slightly, and said: "I’m sorry, it was my fault, I wasn’t looking where I was going."
"Huh, you actually apologized?" Seeing Cheng Ziang’s attitude, the young girl raised her eyebrows in surprise, suddenly brightening up with excitement.
"I don’t want to get entangled with you. I have apologized already, can you please step aside now?" Cheng Ziang said coldly.
"What do you mean, that’s it just because you’ve apologized?" the girl asked with wide eyes.
"What else do you want, are you trying to extort me?" Cheng Ziang asked.
"Otherwise, what? I’m not lacking money, I just want you to chat with me. After all, it’s rare to meet someone from a different place in Kyushu, I’m curious, if you’re not from the Demon Clan, then what are you?" the girl asserted her demand with righteous indignation.
"You are deliberately bothering us, what’s your actual motive?" Cheng Ziang questioned her, not swayed by her words, but rather, he asked calmly.
"What do you mean, do you think I’m trying to harm you? Get this straight, you’re the one who bumped into me first, I haven’t even accused you of harassment!" Hearing Cheng Ziang’s words, the girl felt deeply aggrieved, standing with her hands on her hips and retorting huffily.
As she spoke, she didn’t wait for Cheng Ziang’s reply, turned her head to look at the two attendants, and with justified confidence, said: "Do you two gentlemen also think I’m a bad person?"
"Uh, this..." The two attendants looked at each other, at a loss for the right response.
The term gentleman is usually used to refer to officials, that is, subordinates personally recruited by Imperial Court officials. These people are not official Imperial Court officers, but their status is starkly different from that of the common folk.
Of course, most of the time, terms like gentleman or official family are broadly used by the common people to refer to officials. As far as usage goes, typically only true Imperial Court officers are specifically addressed as magistrate; however, this does not mean that it is completely incorrect to address them as gentleman.
In summary, gentleman or official family is a general term used by the common people for officials, while magistrate specifically refers to Imperial Court officers.
"Little sister, do you think so as well?" the girl asked Feng.
Perhaps because Feng was shorter than her, she subconsciously thought Feng was much younger.
However, Feng did not engage with her, instead she just gave her a cold glance and looked away. Feng, who usually does not like expressing her opinions, inherently disliked such forward girls, feeling an inexplicable unease.
"Are you a local?" Cheng Ziang pondered for a moment and then asked.
"What else?" the girl asked with conviction.
"You..." Cheng Ziang opened his mouth as if wanting to ask something, but quickly gave up and shook his head, saying, "No, nothing."
In fact, Cheng Ziang wanted to ask if she knew anything about the All-knowing, but he feared that might tip her off prematurely. He wasn’t certain if this girl was the same thief they had encountered earlier. If she was, then surely they needed to be cautious.
"You really are odd, you’re shrouded in mysteries," the girl said, staring at him and shaking her head, "you’re clearly a foreigner yet you speak with a Yin State accent, could it be that you are actually from Yin State?"
"Is it that strange? You people of Kyushu are always going to fight in West Outer Heaven, countless Kyushu people have died there, is it really so strange that I speak Kyushu language with a Yin State accent?" Cheng Ziang said calmly.
"Hey, what do you mean by that, I didn’t send them to war, and now you’re complaining to me? If you dare, let the Demon Clan come for their own revenge," the girl pouted, showing her dissatisfaction.
"So what exactly do you want?" Cheng Ziang sighed and asked.
"I heard a high-ranking visitor arrived in the city, the county commander and County Magistrate both went to welcome them. I’m curious what kind of person this visitor is, could it be you?" the girl asked with hands behind her back and her head tilted innocently.
