Chapter 1542: Chapter 1535: Safe Return
With a melancholic heart, Cheng Ziang and Feng finally arrived at their residence in the afternoon. It was perhaps a coincidence that just as they stepped down from the carriage, they were greeted by the Mayor and a group of his subordinates coming face to face.
"Greetings to the Manor Lord," the Mayor cupped his hands in salute, still showing a humble attitude in front of Cheng Ziang.
"Were you all waiting especially for us?" Cheng Ziang asked with a raised eyebrow.
"Yes, upon hearing that the Manor Lord entered the Wuyun Sect, I have been worried and thus waited here for the news of the Manor Lord’s safe return," said the Mayor with his head lowered.
"You actually care so much about our safety?" Cheng Ziang said with a tone of sarcasm.
"What do you mean by that, Manor Lord?" The Mayor lifted his head, putting on a deliberately confused expression.
"We’ve had a talk with the Sect Master of the Wuyun Sect. He agreed to exempt you from ten percent of your taxes, for a period of one year," said Cheng Ziang.
"This," the Mayor became anxious upon hearing the news, "Manor Lord, this is different from what was agreed upon."
"Don’t talk to me about what was agreed upon," Cheng Ziang closed in on him, speaking from a position of authority, "The first time we met you, we also did not expect you to use such a mean trick against us. You bunch of bloodsuckers, as stingy as can be!"
"Manor, Manor Lord must be joking," the Mayor showed a look of surprise and forced a laugh.
"We’ve already been more than reasonable. We will soon leave this place, and I hope you’ll behave yourselves and not provoke the Saints again while we are here. Do you think we are too soft-hearted to kill, and therefore assume you can push us around?" Cheng Ziang adopted an aggressive stance.
"Absolutely not, certainly not," the Mayor was so intimidated by his assertiveness that he kept backing away.
"Good to know, then. Are you satisfied with the outcome?" Cheng Ziang’s demeanor softened as he straightened up and asked with a smile.
"Satisfied, very, very satisfied," stammered the Mayor.
"Good, then." Saying this, Cheng Ziang casually patted him on the shoulder, then disregarded him and entered the courtyard with Feng.
As he approached the courtyard, he heard the voice of Fulajie’er in his mind; having been thinking of her all along and suddenly hearing her buoyant voice made him feel inexplicably melancholic and uncomfortable.
"Yo, the two distinguished guests have returned, I’ve already notified Luo’er," Fulajie’er’s voice was still full of vitality, although it carried a touch of sarcasm.
"How was it? They didn’t give you a hard time, did they? Did you have to fight your way out to return here?" Fulajie’er continued to ask with enthusiasm.
"Can’t you see the carriage that brought us back? We were visiting, not looking for trouble. What on earth are you thinking?" Cheng Ziang said with a wry smile.
"You of all people went to talk reason," Fulajie’er mumbled to herself.
Hearing her muttering, for some reason, Cheng Ziang felt like laughing. Although he managed to hold it back on his face, he couldn’t suppress it in his heart.
"Xiao Fula, I wish you could always be so lively," Cheng Ziang sincerely remarked.
"Why do you seem so odd today?" Fulajie’er asked with a tone of disdain.
"Nothing much, probably just a bit car sick, and feeling a little homesick," Cheng Ziang shrugged, his tone noncommittal.
"Hurry up and tell me what happened over there?" Fulajie’er asked with anticipation.
"Don’t rush it, I’ll talk when I see Luo’er," Cheng Ziang said.
"It’s Princess!" Fulajie’er corrected him again, "Apart from me and the bad woman, you all must address her as ’Princess’!"
"Ah, right, right, right, Princess... no wait, why can Sister Moumou call her by name?" Cheng Ziang asked, scratching his head.
While making small talk with Fulajie’er, Cheng Ziang and Feng made their way back into the courtyard. It was still very quiet inside the courtyard; Hu Daoke was squatting in front of the stable watching the horses graze, and Baiyue was inspecting the carriage parked inside.
The idle Hu Daoke, seeing Cheng Ziang, came forward excitedly and said with exhilaration, "Wow, you’re finally back! I thought you might have run into trouble there."
"Can’t you just hope that I’m doing well?" sighed Cheng Ziang.
"How did it go?" Baiyue jumped down from the carriage and approached Cheng Ziang to ask.
"Hmm, things have been largely resolved. In principle, we can leave here tomorrow," said Cheng Ziang.
"Then, have you gained anything from the Wuyun Sect?" Baiyue asked expectantly.
"Such matters have to be reported to Luo’er... no, I mean to the Saint first," Cheng Ziang said helplessly.
It seems that having been used to equality, the Advance Team found it challenging to establish a top-down hierarchical order in a short time, and even Cheng Ziang was no exception.
Soon after, the door of the main room opened, and Tangmo walked out with an expressionless face. Among the five of them, she was unique in that she didn’t need to wear a mask.
"Luo’er wants to see you; come in," Tangmo said, also sticking to a taciturn mode of speaking.
Facing Tangmo’s summons, Cheng Ziang and Feng exchanged glances before following her into the main house. Whether they had gotten into their roles or not, upon entering the room, they inexplicably felt somewhat nervous.
Inside, Luo’er was sitting cross-legged on the bed, resting with his eyes closed. On the arrival of the two, his long eyelashes fluttered slightly, and half-opening his eyes, they revealed an envy-inducing dark green color.
Luo’er’s demeanor remained as beautiful as ever, after all, he was Princess Nina’s son. Once he calms down and assumes the posture, he seems to naturally possess a disdainful demeanor that doesn’t require intentional performance.
"Greetings to the Saint!" Upon entering the room, Cheng Ziang and Feng instinctively knelt on one knee. Although unmonitored, such self-discipline is indispensable.
"Rise," Luo’er’s lips trembled slightly, his voice becoming more dignified.
"Thank you, Saint," Cheng Ziang and Feng exchanged glances, nodding to each other, and stood up.
Apparently, Luo’er also cared about his team, so he just let them go through the motions and didn’t mean to have them kneel all the time, let alone kneel for reporting.
"How are things?" Luo’er asked with his hands crossed and eyelids lowered.
"The Wuyun Sect agreed to a ten percent tax reduction for a year," Cheng Ziang reported respectfully.
"What do you think?" Luo’er inquired.
"I think it’s satisfactory," Cheng Ziang explained, "Sect Master Dongliang Yu told me that the Wuyun Sect primarily levies taxes on merchants, and there might even be rebates for the people. If that’s the case, I felt there was no need to insist on them making changes. But since they’ve already given us some face, I think it’s acceptable."
"Just one side of the story," Luo’er said impassively.
"The mayor’s view is also just one side of the story," Cheng Ziang reminded him.
"Hmm," Luo’er nodded in agreement, then continued to ask, "Apart from this, have you discovered anything else?"
"Additionally, Dongliang Yu gave us five hundred silver coins as a reward, hoping that we would send a family letter back to Qi State," Cheng Ziang said, taking out the letter from his pocket and handing it to Tangmo.
"Send it back to Qi State?" Luo’er asked with a hint of hesitation, taking the letter.
"Yes, Dongliang Yu is originally from the Dongliang family of Qi State and has come to Fengyu to establish a sect," Cheng Ziang explained.
"The nobility of Qi State, if I remember correctly, isn’t it the Anxiang family?" Tangmo asked with a slight frown.
"The Anxiang family is a colossal family, but the Dongliang family is not inconsiderable either; they are also one of the top families in Qi State," Cheng Ziang explained.
"Is it just about sending a letter?" Luo’er looked at the letter in his hand and murmured to himself.
Of course, he did not open the letter to read its content; he still had that kind of upbringing.
"Forgive my frankness, Saint," Cheng Ziang hesitated for a moment before speaking again with a respectful bow, "I always feel that the Wuyun Sect is not an ordinary sect, just as Dongliang Yu has perceived that we are not a regular envoy."
"Dongliang Yu could actually discern our identities?" Luo’er raised his eyebrows in inquiry.
"Yes, and he recognized our divine powers, noting that they are merely Nascent Soul at most," Cheng Ziang continued.
"Nascent Soul?" Hearing this term, it was Tangmo who, unexpectedly, couldn’t help exclaiming.
