Chapter 149 - 145: Dr. Anatoli

Chapter 149: Chapter 145: Dr. Anatoli

Durman stared at Wang Xu’s face, its numbness making it unreadable. If what Wang Xu said was true and he already had a child on Earth, he wouldn’t have agreed to the Manikens’ demands and allied with them.

Certainly, if he offended Wang Xu and the power behind him, he might never be able to meet this child he has yet to meet.

"Is what you said true?" Durman asked slowly after a long silence.

"Believe it or not, Mr. Durman, I hope you understand one thing - our research on the genetic fusion of Earthlings and Otherworlders is unparalleled on Earth. We can help you have as many children as you want, but that’s conditional on you taking a stand," Wang Xu replied, unflinchingly staring at him.

"Can I see him once?" Durman couldn’t help but ask.

"No!" Wang Xu decisively rejected.

"Why?"

"Why? Don’t you know?" Wang Xu said leisurely with a half-smiling expression on his face, "Your attitude makes it hard for us to trustingly let the child be with you."

"What do you want for you to let him go?" Durman asked through gritted teeth.

"Please choose your words carefully, Mr. Durman. Your child is also a member of Earth’s populace. There’s no such thing as captivity in the life he leads with us," Wang Xu corrected.

Durman fell silent, Wang Xu’s point was simple. They wanted to use this child he’d never met to threaten him, to force him to be loyal to their organization. His actions had alerted them, so it would take some effort to get to the child.

"When can I see him?" After a pause, Durman couldn’t help but ask again.

"When you can see him depends on your attitude, Mr. Durman. I hope this doesn’t happen again. I want to tell you that what the Manikens can give to you, our Headquarters can fulfill too. But you need to follow our instructions. Do you understand?" Wang Xu said.

After a long silence, Durman slowly asked, "How old is he this year?"

"I can’t tell you," Wang Xu said, "But I can tell you that if you were to die today, he’s fully capable of inheriting your wealth."

At these words, Durman nodded, pursed his lips and continued, "What kind of facility do you want?"

Wang Xu faintly smiled, knowing Durman had yielded. After working together for so many years, it was impossible for Headquarters not to have investigated Durman. They weren’t solely dependent on Durman as an informant; otherwise, they wouldn’t have known about Durman’s attempt to ally with the Americans.

As for the child, Wang Xu had not lied. At the inception of the Origin Project, the Academy was in dire need of genetic samples from Otherworlders, so they collected some from everyone they knew and didn’t know.

When Tangmo was successfully born, the entire Origin Project was activated, and Durman’s genes were naturally included.

To Headquarters, this mixed-blood child was their trump card against Durman. Without the right time, they wouldn’t surrender the child to him. After all, he’d already betrayed Headquarters once - there was no guarantee he wouldn’t do it a second time.

"We need a covert place, preferably remote, distance from the Otherworld Gate doesn’t matter," Wang Xu said.

After contemplating for a bit, Durman responded, "A concealed place, can be far from the Otherworld Gate. I understand, I will arrange it. As for the child, I hope you... "

"Don’t worry about the child, he’s living well on Earth," Wang Xu interrupted him.

"Can I meet him?" Durman asked, not giving up yet.

"That depends on your performance, Mr. Durman," Wang Xu reiterated his position.

Although he was the Chief of the front-line Headquarters, he didn’t have the authority to decide on Durman meeting his child. Durman needed Headquarters’ approval to meet his child.

When he left the manor, Durman seemed at ease, perhaps due to having a child late in life. Although they couldn’t meet now, Wang Xu’s assurance gave him some comfort.

Watching his retreating figure, Wang Xu shook his head. He went to the Headquarters’ office and took out a picture from a drawer.

It was a graduation group photo of the Orion squad during their time at the Academy. The five squad members were all in the picture. As he looked at Murong’s smile, he pondered for a while before he put the picture back in the drawer.

"I wonder what he would do if he knew about this?" Wang Xu murmured, gazing out of the window.

Durman acted quickly. The next day, his subordinates came to the manor in a fluster to tell them that the location was ready and they could move immediately.

The new manor is located in the hilly mountainous area about two days to the west of the Otherworld Gate, where Durman’s tea plantation industry is located. There aren’t many villages nearby, which fits Wang Xu’s requirements perfectly.

Preparation of the carriage requires some time, so Wang Xu decides to set off in two days. Of course, as the highest-ranking chief, he must stay at headquarters, and therefore can’t accompany Luo’er and others on the journey.

Everyone is busy preparing for the relocation. In the evening, Luo’er comes to the office. Wang Xu is still working. The desk, piled high with official documents, is illuminated by a brightly lit Magic Table Lamp.

This lamp uses the magical power of the Magic Crystal to emit light. Magic itself emits light when activated, so this is a very common household item. It has not become widespread in Otherworld, however, because most people there can’t afford the high-grade luxury of a Magic Crystal. Only rich businessmen like Durman can afford to keep their lamps on day and night.

"What brings you here at such a late hour?" Wang Xu is surprised to see Luo’er’s arrival. He would rather believe Luo’er has come simply to chat.

"I have something to ask you," Luo’er states directly.

"What is it?" True to form, Luo’er only comes to seek him out when there’s business. Although a bit disappointed, Wang Xu responds with understanding.

"Do you remember what happened when I was eight?" Luo’er asks.

"Eight years old..." Wang Xu puts down his documents and scrunches his brows in recollection before responding, "Why, feeling nostalgic?"

"Do you remember the man who was with Baiyue when she first came to the Academy?" Luo’er asks directly. He knows there’s no need to beat around the bush with Wang Xu. If Wang Xu knows anything, he will surely tell him.

"You still remember that?" Hearing Luo’er’s words, Wang Xu pauses a moment before looking puzzled.

"Of course, I remember a lot of things from before." Luo’er says.

Wang Xu contemplates for a while, then holds his head in his hand and asks, "What have you found out so far?"

"After we solved the case of the missing weapons, we headed west and reached a village of Sub-beastmen. The people in this village have the same features as Baiyue - all with rabbit ears. I don’t know if you’ve read this part of the report yet," Luo’er says.

"Oh, it’s here. I haven’t had a chance to read it yet." As he speaks, Wang Xu takes up the report about the Sub-beastmen lying at hand.

"The chief of the village told me that Baiyue resembles her missing daughter. Her daughter disappeared after participating in the first Otherworld war. " Luo’er looks at him then presents his theory, "The chief’s daughter was only 16 when she disappeared in 2021, and Yue’er was born in 2031. I don’t think this is a coincidence."

Wang Xu listens silently, repeatedly nodding his head. Luo’er continues, "I have asked the village chief, and they are the only rabbit-ear tribe in this world, without any branches. They also denied any earthlings visiting the village, so I wonder whether Baiyue has some connection to the village chief’s lost daughter."

"Your analysis is pretty impressive," Wang Xu can’t help admiring with a smile.

"It’s just some minor work," Luo’er pauses, then continues, "I started reevaluating Baiyue after this incident. If I’m not mistaken, Baiyue is not a mixed-blood of earth’s Yellow Race and Otherworld people. Her appearance doesn’t match the standards of the Yellow Race, rather, she appears more like a Caucasian."

After hearing Luo’er’s analysis, Wang Xu can’t help but sigh. Then, he says, "You’re quite correct with your analysis, Baiyue is indeed not a mixed-blood of the Yellow Race. Her father is Dr. Anatoli, a Caucasian."

"Dr. Anatoli?" It’s the first time Luo’er has heard this name.

"Dr. Anatoli, an expert in Engineering Physics and a Russian Otherworld researcher. He participated in the first and second United Nations investigation tasks of Otherworld," Wang Xu slowly explains the man’s identity.

"He is Baiyue’s father?" asks Luo’er.

"Yes," Wang Xu nods before saying, "He is the tall Caucasian man you saw in your childhood, Baiyue’s biological father."

"What about her mother?" Luo’er can’t help but ask.

"Her mother died before she was born," Wang Xu says before letting out a sigh, "You might have been mistaken about one thing. Baiyue does have her parents, but she’s also a product of the Origin Project, with her own surrogate mother."

"What does that mean?" Luo’er can’t help but ask.

"When Baiyue’s mother was brought to Haiya Academy, she was already dying. Her father pleaded with us to save the woman," Wang Xu says, shaking his head. He goes on, "Unfortunately, we failed to save the woman but saved the perfectly integrated fetus. We genetically re-engineered the child to adapt to both Earth and Otherworld, and then implanted her into a surrogate mother."

"I don’t quite understand." Luo’er says hesitantly.

"Baiyue is the second known case of a successful pregnancy between an earthling and an Otherworld person, the first being yourself. The Academy wanted to save this child at that time, so they took the child, who was still an embryo, from her mother’s body, performed genetic modification, and then implanted her into a surrogate mother," Wang Xu explains.

Luo’er gazes at him speechlessly, not sure whether or not he understands. After a pause, Wang Xu says, "Regarding Baiyue’s father, I will bring some stuff to you when I return to Earth for the debriefing. It’s what Baiyue’s father left for her."
