Chapter 1460: Chapter 1453: The Ritual to Expel the Enemy
Baiyue stared at Cheng Ziang with a hint of skepticism, "It doesn’t sound like you to say such things."
"What do you mean?" Cheng Ziang replied with a wry smile.
Baiyue pursed her lips and did not continue. Even if she didn’t say it, both of them were well aware. If Luo’er were considered the moderate faction of the Advance Team, then Cheng Ziang and Hu Daoke belonged to the radical faction.
The two together always followed the principle of stirring up trouble whenever possible. They would meddle in matters they should and in those they shouldn’t. Therefore, Baiyue always felt that Cheng Ziang was not speaking from his heart.
"Of course," Cheng Ziang paused and then continued, "If these people offend us, then self-defense is necessary, like..."
Before Cheng Ziang could finish speaking, a burly man wielding a broadsword noticed them and started charging at them while banging his weapon on the ground and bellowing.
However, as he charged over, a tearing noise could be heard as if something was being ripped apart. Feng raised her blade high, and a long mark appeared on the ground—a trace created by the release of sword energy.
In the instant Feng acted, Cheng Ziang quickly reached out his hand trying to stop her, but it was too late. The attack, made of magic power, was incredibly sharp and instantly cut the burly man, who attempted to attack them, in two. The scene was gruesomely bloody as the man was chopped into two halves.
Hearing Cheng Ziang’s call, Feng put away her fierce expression and turned around, looking somewhat puzzled at Cheng Ziang. Facing her perplexed look, Cheng Ziang sighed and waved his hand, "Don’t... don’t be too bloody, restrain yourself a bit."
Feng had an old problem of not knowing how to hold back. If she were to unleash her might here, the whole village probably wouldn’t find a single intact corpse.
"Oh." Hearing his reminder, Feng nodded seriously, then turned and stood in front of the two, vigilantly watching the fight not far away.
"Now we’ve intervened, whether we said we wouldn’t or not," Baiyue said.
"Then let’s fight. It’s not like I started it," Cheng Ziang said.
"Do you really need to be so secretive about this kind of thing?" Baiyue asked with a hint of speechlessness.
"Of course, it’s necessary. If you go tattling to Luo’er later, won’t I get a scolding again?" Cheng Ziang shrugged, stating as if it were a matter of course.
"Since when did you start being afraid of Luo’er?" Baiyue asked in surprise.
"I just can’t stand the nagging," Cheng Ziang said sincerely.
"Ha ha..." Baiyue laughed dismissively and fell silent.
These foreign brutes didn’t seem to be frightened by their comrade’s gruesome death. Instead, due to Feng’s conspicuous actions, they were drawn to them, and several burly men armed with long spears and broadswords charged at them.
"Good, let me test their mettle." Once Cheng Ziang had a rough idea of their level, he felt more at ease. He put down his Origin Submachine Gun and drew his long sabre from his back to prepare for battle.
"What are you doing, you want to cause trouble again?" Noticing his action, Baiyue immediately issued a warning.
"Oh, come on, I’m just testing my own skill," Cheng Ziang explained.
"There’s no need. You might as well practice your shooting skills if you have the chance," Baiyue rejected his request without hesitation.
"No, just one. I just want to satisfy my craving for a fray," Cheng Ziang persuaded her warmly.
Logically speaking, as the deputy leader, he should be the one in charge of Baiyue, but the situation was quite the opposite. The main reason for this was that Cheng Ziang was worried that after returning, Baiyue would report to Luo’er, which would inevitably result in another lecture from Luo’er. This was because the standing order for the Advance Team was to avoid danger whenever possible, not to actively step into it.
Hearing his request, Baiyue did not insist unconditionally but glared at him, then sighed and said to Feng next to him: "Feng, take care of the other enemies!"
"Understood!" Feng nodded, then charged towards the robust men on her own initiative.
"Hehe, thanks." Cheng Ziang chuckled, then also took a long sword into his hands and charged forward.
Since the use of force was restricted, Feng did not use magic to deal with these people. Instead, she relied on her exquisite swordsmanship and the divine weapon in her hands.
A few stout men barely exchanged blows with Feng before they were all cut down by her sword. Thanks to the absolute sharpness of the Kedal metal blade, Feng was not afraid of clashing and directly cut through the enemies’ weapons, then killing them outright.
On the other side, Cheng Ziang also managed to cut down the enemies in front of him with two strokes. These foreign brutes had only brute strength, but their weapons were very inferior. Plus, they did not know how to use skillful force, so it was especially easy for their weapons to be cut through.
After dealing with these foreign brutes who had noticed them, Cheng Ziang and Feng slowly retreated back to their original positions. By this time, all the foreign brutes were busy fighting the Ghost Race, and the enemies who had noticed the three of them had already been dealt with, so the trio was temporarily safe.
However, Cheng Ziang also noticed that although it was easy for them to dispatch these enemies, it was not so easy for the Ghost Race. The battle between both sides had become intense, and the attackers even started to show some advantages.
Initially, the Ghost Race had the advantage in numbers, but these attackers kept popping out from the dark forest, slowly catching up in numbers with the Ghost Race. The combat effectiveness of the Ghost Race was definitely inferior to these attackers, so the scales of victory and defeat began to tip.
Just as Cheng Ziang and Baiyue considered whether to help out the Ghost Race, suddenly, they heard a loud chant, followed by the violent disturbance of the magic power in the air.
Cheng Ziang and Baiyue were extremely surprised by this situation and instinctively looked towards the direction of the sound.
The reason why they were so surprised was that, as mentioned before, the use of magic power in the East Continent was mainly through storage and release, not the Circulation Method common in the Western Continent. So, during their travels in the East Continent, it was rare to encounter violent disturbances in the air’s magic power.
Because as previously stated, the disturbance caused by the gathering of magic power is greater than that produced by the release of magic power. And since the East Continent uses storage methods, basically, it’s all about the release of magic power, naturally causing disturbances inferior to the gathering of magic power.
It was precisely for this reason that they were so astonished by the intense magical disturbance because it meant someone nearby was using the Magic Circulation Method typical of Western Continent people.
Following the direction of the sound, they saw the Ghost Race High Witch who performed the ritual for them during the day, standing on a brightly lit platform, holding a bizarrely shaped staff, dancing a mysterious dance.
The sharp-eyed Baiyue could see more clearly. There seemed to be a strange magic array on the platform, and apart from the High Witch, more than a dozen Ghost Race girls were distributed around the platform, kneeling facing the High Witch according to a certain arrangement of the magic array, muttering incantations.
In the middle of the platform, the High Witch danced a mysterious dance around the central circle, issuing a high-pitched chant, harmonizing with the surrounding Ghost Race girls as they sang together.
"It’s a Spell!" Baiyue stared at the High Witch for a while and said with certainty.
"Spells...No, I can hear what the High Witch is chanting too," said Cheng Ziang, looking at her.
"I’m talking about those girls; they are chanting Spells that gather magic power," Baiyue pointed at the Ghost Race girls and explained.
"Sss, so there are people in the East Continent who understand Magic too..." Cheng Ziang gasped, squinting his eyes.
"Notice the positions of those girls; they’re all on the nodes of that Magic Array. This is a magic-gathering Array, and they are activating a large-scale Magic Formula," Baiyue said again after staring for a while, with certainty.
"What’s the use of them standing at the Array’s nodes?" Cheng Ziang couldn’t help but ask curiously.
"What’s the best way to increase the power of a Magic Array?" Baiyue didn’t directly answer his question but instead responded with one of her own.
