Chapter 1446: Chapter 1439: Interests Have No Boundaries
Despite a torrential downpour and over ten thousand casualties, everything seemed unchanged. Yunji, albeit a bit guilty, did not retreat but continued to hold the camp firmly.
The heavy rain lasted for two days and nights, followed by half a month of gloomy, damp weather. Logically, this would have been the perfect opportunity for Yichuan Long to attack, yet he missed such a chance. According to information from an informant, Yichuan Long was not even in camp but had rushed back to Linshui City, apparently planning to discuss matters with his father.
The day after the battle ended, Cheng Ziang and others had nothing to do, so they followed Miss Zisu to visit the temporary field hospital of the Demon Clan’s army.
They were, after all, modern people. Although not medical professionals, their concept of health and medicine was far superior to that of the Demon Clan, so they could provide some necessary guidance to the Demon Clan’s army.
Cheng Ziang noticed that, with the adjustment assistance from the High-peak people and the Advance Team, the Demon Clan army’s field medical standards had greatly improved, and all equipment used for the wounded was sterilized with boiling water.
The drinking water in the camp was also protected by the Demon Clan’s army, and the soldiers were strictly forbidden from drinking raw water; they could only drink boiled water. They also implemented strict sanitary zoning, separating the water sources from the temporary field latrines to ensure health and safety.
This seemingly ruthless compulsory behavior of the Demon Clan’s army, although it caused some inconvenience to the soldiers, greatly improved the army’s overall spirit. The incidence of diarrhea and parasitic diseases among Demon Clan soldiers was significantly reduced.
Simultaneously, due to improved sanitary conditions, the success rate of emergency rescues in the Demon Clan’s army had significantly increased, with cases of death due to infection drastically reduced and most deaths were due to excessive blood loss.
However, despite everything, the Demon Clan’s army could be considered the strongest of their era. In contrast, the Nine Thousand Battalion, although dubbed as such, possessed much higher combat quality than the Dongsheng military. But in terms of medical and health concepts, both sides were roughly the same.
Based on existing circumstances, the casualty rate among Nine Thousand Battalion soldiers was more than three times higher than in the Demon Clan’s army. That’s why the Demon Clan’s army could always rapidly organize new offensives, while once the Human Race’s army collapsed, they couldn’t easily recover.
Cheng Ziang vaguely remembered that in the final battle against the Dongsheng army, the Demon Clan’s army maintained vigorous combat power throughout, always fighting, yet displaying no signs of fatigue as they overwhelmed the Dongsheng army to the point of helplessness.
Without modern chemical medical supplies, the Demon Clan’s army could only use the most primitive herbs for treatment. Even though the herbs were primitive, they were very effective.
Some herbs provided by the Demon Clan’s army, when picked and the juice squeezed onto a wound, would immediately stop bleeding and alleviate pain. Moreover, with continuous bandaging for about ten days, the wound would scab over and heal, which was quite miraculous.
West Outer Heaven, apart from being a Magic Crystal-rich area, was also rich in Heavenly Materials and Earthly Treasures. Because the Demon Clan people were relatively smaller, their scale of natural exploitation was much smaller, hence, there were still many ancient forests tens of thousands of years old with diverse animal and plant species.
Before the outbreak of war in West Outer Heaven, purchasing various Heavenly Materials and Earthly Treasures from West Outer Heaven and selling them in Kyushu was a way for merchants to make immense profits.
This was precisely why these merchants from Kyushu were very angry about the war in West Outer Heaven, yet they were helpless. After all, Warrior, Farmer, Artisan, Merchant—merchants being the lowest rank, naturally could not contend with the Imperial Court.
However, in some respects, Eastern Prosperity Nine States also began to show some basic capitalist sprouts. Merchants manufactured products in workshops, then traded them with the Demon Clan people in West Outer Heaven in exchange for their Magic Crystals and Heavenly Materials and Earthly Treasures, creating a cycle when buying back into their country. The only ones at a loss were probably these conservative Cultivation families.
Because merchants had begun to possess a certain degree of Influence, they started to seek their political status. As the saying goes, merchants know no boundaries; since they couldn’t achieve a normal political status in Kyushu, these merchants naturally set their sights on the Demon Clan.
Hence, the Advance Team saw such a situation: merchants from Kyushu spared no effort in supporting the Demon Clan’s army’s counterattack against the Dongsheng Empire’s invasion, not because these merchants had a sense of justice, but because the Dongsheng Empire’s invasion of West Outer Heaven genuinely affected their interests.
It is very foolish to solely use a stereotyped image to judge a country and its people. It’s even more so considering that the feudal era fundamentally did not have a modern concept of a nation-state.
Therefore, it cannot be simplistically said that these merchants from Kyushu betrayed their own country because they essentially did not consider themselves subjects of the Dongsheng Empire, and this was not an isolated case. Basically, most people in Kyushu lacked a clear concept of the nation.
It should be noted that in the East Continent, the real organization that possessed the modern concept of a nation-state was the Southern Yao Race, which, with the help of the Advance Team, relied on national identity to unite the three major Beast-Ear Races into one ethnicity.
The world is always in the process of old things being replaced by new ones. Although the new things may present a declining trend, their advanced nature endows them with great vigor. The replacement of old things by new ones is almost inevitable.
Thus, the Demon Clan started off on the right foot. Once the Southern Yao Race joined their cause, the Demon Clan would be able to consolidate the resources of West Outer Heaven and initiate the first Industrial Revolution.
Back at the camp, Cheng Ziang and others followed Miss Zisu as they inspected the wounded in the camp. Most of these people were from the Kyushu residents, but were loyal to the Demon Clan’s army. Only the concept of a national state could unite them with the Demon Clan.
However, though the situation in the camp was good, Miss Zisu still looked serious as she lowered her head, seemingly in deep thought.
Not far away, two Demon Clan’s military doctors appeared to be discussing something. One of the doctors expressed his concerns, "With both rain and war, it would be troublesome if an epidemic breaks out."
"No worries," the other responded. "Our protection measures have been very effective; there won’t be an epidemic."
"It’s hard to say, there are always exceptions," the first doctor replied. "Do you remember when the Kyushu Empire invaded the Ghost Race?"
"Oh, I’ve heard about that," his companion nodded.
"How did the emperor of the Human Race die in the end? He died from disease. Some diseases, the Ghost Race can withstand, but not necessarily the Kyushu residents," the doctor said with concern.
"Our army is composed of a complex mix; even if a disease breaks out, it doesn’t necessarily mean we’ll all be doomed," the companion reassured him.
Hearing their conversation, Miss Zisu, who was lost in thought, suddenly had a flash of inspiration. She excitedly smacked her fist and almost jumped up.
"Miss Zisu, calm down, be careful not to step on the wounded," Cheng Ziang hurriedly advised behind her.
Hearing his words, Miss Zisu turned around and looked at him excitedly, finally speaking, "I’ll go find Yunji first; please feel free to carry on."
"Oh." Cheng Ziang nodded somewhat blankly.
"What did she think of, to get so excited?" Hu Daoke curiously asked as he joined him.
"Probably, she thought of a way to deal with the Yichuan Clan’s army," Cheng Ziang speculated.
"Damn, doesn’t that put Yichuan Ying in danger again?" Hu Daoke asked worriedly.
"It shouldn’t. Since they’ve already made promises, they probably won’t touch Yichuan Ying again," Cheng Ziang said, but after a moment of thought, he still turned to Feng and instructed, "Feng, you go back first to protect Yichuan Ying. Don’t let the Demon Clan touch her."
"I know!" Feng nodded, turning and leaving without delay.
"You’re worried too, aren’t you?" Hu Daoke teased as he watched Feng leave.
"Given the current situation, besides using Yichuan Ying to coerce Yichuan Long, I really can’t think of a better way to break this impasse," Cheng Ziang said with narrowed eyes.
"We won’t have to deal with Yichuan Long ourselves, will we?" Hu Daoke fell back into worry.
