Chapter 1431: Chapter 1424: Creating Conflict

You should know that just the presence of the three lesser aristocratic families from West Outer Heaven has already been causing them headaches. If Kyushu were to attack en masse, eliminating the Demon Clan would be almost effortless.

However, such thoughts seemed implausible to Cheng Ziang. East Prosperity Nine States, similar to ancient China, were conservative, tending to their own land and not apt to expand outward. The wars with West Outer Heaven had already proved this fact.

To put it bluntly, if the Dongsheng Empire were to expand, it would move north or west, or even south to invade Fengyu. But it was highly unlikely to carve out pockets of territory in West Outer Heaven.

The three aristocratic families migrated to West Outer Heaven only because they were oppressed in Kyushu. If they had a choice, they would have much preferred staying in Kyushu rather than venturing into unfamiliar territories.

After the group settled down, Dangyang Ling began his performance. Dangyang Wu rarely got involved in household matters; he was mostly occupied with administrative duties in the city. Although the aristocratic families governed the city, they demonstrated considerable administrative skills, something Cheng Ziang believed the Demon Clan needed to learn.

On the days when Dangyang Wu was not in the mansion, it essentially became Dangyang Ling’s domain. He began to make life difficult for Yichuan Ying, often without any reason, causing trouble until threatened by Ziang and others. Humiliated, he ordered elite soldiers from the mansion to surround the courtyard where Yichuan Ying resided.

Though Dangyang Wu had allowed Yichuan Ying to stay, what was ostensibly asylum was, in practice, confinement. However, Dangyang Ling handled it too blatantly, almost as if he wanted to declare the confinement explicitly.

Encircled, Yichuan Ying and companions could only move between the courtyard and a couple of rooms. They felt extremely oppressed because they were constantly under surveillance. These elite soldiers had a keen sense of perception, comparable to Feng, making it particularly troubling for her as she was constantly subjected to their intrusive scrutiny.

What was this feeling like for Feng? It was as if, even during her meals and sleep, countless eyes were watching her, which was tremendously repressive for a cultivator like her.

Furthermore, Dangyang Ling made life difficult in other ways too, such as serving them cold or even spoiled food, aiming to humiliate Yichuan Ying.

Before coming here, Cheng Ziang had an inkling of the difficulties that the non-cultivating Yichuan Ying would face, but having experienced it firsthand, he felt he had underestimated how shameless these people could be.

It turned out that a woman who couldn’t cultivate had such a low status in Kyushu, that even as the Yichuan Clan’s heiress, she couldn’t get treatment befitting her status—a concept incomprehensible to Ziang and others, born and raised under new norms.

But Cheng Ziang and his companions were not to be trifled with. Though Yichuan Ying had grown accustomed to such treatment, they could not tolerate it. With their persuasion and assistance, Yichuan Ying began leveraging her status as the Yichuan Clan’s heiress, displaying her defiance with abandon.

Cheng Ziang knew well the adage: either burst out in silence or perish in silence; the louder one’s voice, the better one’s chances of gaining benefits. In this regard, Cheng Ziang and his companions played their parts to the fullest.

With Cheng Ziang’s assistance, Yichuan Ying started showing her arrogance and anger as the Yichuan heiress, commanding Cheng Ziang and others to throw the cold food out of the courtyard—where it landed was of no concern to them.

Hu Daoke was even more outrageous. Given his strength, he tossed dishes like frisbees, causing chaos in the Dangyang Mansion, with food flying all over the sky.

The uproar in the mansion finally caught Dangyang Wu’s attention, prompting him to summon Dangyang Ling and sternly inquire about the situation.

Dangyang Ling exaggerated the story in his recounting, eliciting a sigh from Dangyang Wu, who then said, "While they may be useless, they are still from the Yichuan Clan. Be a bit more polite to them, to avoid Yichuan Hong badmouthing us behind our backs."

"My son has already been quite kind to them, yet these ingrates are not satisfied," complained Dangyang Ling, feeling aggrieved.

"Then be even kinder to them, appease them until Yichuan Hong arrives," Dangyang Wu instructed.

"I’m upset," Dangyang Ling said resentfully.

"What can being upset do? Do you want to hit her?" Dangyang Wu grew angry as well, "Do you think you’re hitting her, or are you hitting the face of the Yichuan Clan? What do you think Yichuan Hong would feel if he knew we had hit his daughter—humiliated or furious?"

"I understand, thank you for your guidance, father," mumbled Dangyang Ling, reluctantly bowing his head.

"Before Yichuan Hong arrives, be nicer to them and don’t be too harsh. Really, they’ve turned the magnificent mansion into a complete mess; I don’t even want to come back here anymore," Dangyang Wu sighed.

"All these Yichuan Clan’s guards are causing trouble; I’ll find a chance to deal with them all!" Dangyang Ling stated.

"Nonsense, among those three, one is Yichuan Hong’s Shadow Guard. Do you dare to touch someone else’s Shadow Guard? Do you think in Yichuan Hong’s eyes, is the Shadow Guard more important, or that useless daughter?" Dangyang Wu glared at him again and scolded irritably.

"Why are you so afraid of the Yichuan Clan?" Dangyang Ling asked, puzzled.

"It’s not about fear," Dangyang Wu explained helplessly, "We are allies now. As you see, the Demon Clan is eyeing us voraciously. If the Yichuan Clan were to turn against us, we would face the Demon Clan’s army directly. How are we to cope then?"

"Let’s just fight," Dangyang Ling said matter-of-factly.

"Nonsense, do you think fighting a war is child’s play? You don’t realize that before troops move, millions are spent on provisions. Although our family is wealthy, we can’t withstand such expenditure," Dangyang Wu reprimanded.

"With our strength, are we really afraid of those non-cultivating Demons?" Dangyang Ling asked, still confused.

"The Heavenly Prosperity Teachers have already been defeated, the people of Kyushu submit at the mere sight of danger and you still think the Demon Clan is just a motley crew? You must be uneducated, not understanding the underlying reasons," Dangyang Wu said, unable to help sighing.

"What’s the use of reading? Power is the eternal truth," Dangyang Ling muttered, clenching his fists.

"Regardless, before Yichuan Hong arrives, don’t stir up any more trouble. I don’t want to see our home in chaos again," Dangyang Wu ended the conversation with a rebuke.

After being scolded by Dangyang Wu like this, Dangyang Ling became much more subdued. However, Cheng Ziang and his group seemed addicted to their antics, with no intention of stopping.

In fact, this was one of Cheng Ziang’s strategies. They couldn’t possibly wait until Yichuan Hong arrived, for as soon as both parties met, their plan would be completely exposed. So they had to turn Dangyang Wu’s mansion upside down before Yichuan Hong arrived.

Thus, in the following two days, they kept stirring up trouble, still throwing dishes everywhere, insulting the guards stationed outside Dangyang Mansion.

Unable to stand it anymore, Dangyang Ling rushed into the courtyard with men, pointed at Yichuan Ying’s nose, and loudly demanded, "What on earth do you think you’re doing?"

Yichuan Ying, trained by Cheng Ziang and his men, now shed her usual humility and stood tall, retorting, "Don’t you know what you have done yourself?"

"I have already improved your treatment; what more do you want?" Dangyang Ling hadn’t expected Yichuan Ying to dare meet his gaze directly and trembled with anger.

"And what about these guards, are they supervising us?" Yichuan Ying asked defiantly, with hands on her hips pointing at the surrounding guards.

"They are here for your safety; what’s the problem?" Dangyang Ling lied without even blinking.

"Protection? Looks more like surveillance to me. I have my own guards, your help is simply unnecessary," Yichuan Ying said dismissively, hands still on her hips.

"Don’t bite the hand that feeds you; good intentions taken for ingratitude!" Dangyang Ling felt like he was about to explode with anger.

"I am ungrateful, what can you do about it? I am the Yichuan Clan’s miss, what can you possibly do to me?" Yichuan Ying said, her eyes provoking.

"You, you!" Dangyang Ling was so furious he was seeing red and without thinking, swung a palm toward Yichuan Ying. As a practitioner of the Royal Dao, had his palm squarely hit Yichuan Ying, she would undoubtedly have died on the spot.
