Chapter 143: Chapter 139: Rebellion Attack
"Is this what those magical weapons from Earth... no, the Otherworld, look like?" Luo’er said, dipping his finger in the wine and sketching the general shape of a bolt-action rifle on the table.
"Exactly," Boen pointed to the drawing on the table, affirming, "That’s what they look like. They’re very powerful and loud."
He eventually couldn’t help but ask, "How do you know all this?"
"Old man, we’ve seen a lot in our travels," Hu Daoke proudly proclaimed.
"So it seems," Boen chuckled, "I was the one who was ignorant."
"Do they come around often?" Luo’er inquired.
Boen sighed, "Not often, but whenever they run out of supplies, they go around scavenging for resources. Food, alcohol, tobacco, even women, they target everything."
"Do they have a fixed base?" Luo’er continued.
"No," Boen shook his head, "They wander around here, ambushing passersby."
"That sounds like a bandit to me," Hu Daoke couldn’t help but comment, "If it was a civilian army, they would have been deployed to fight against Obus at the front line!"
"The composition of the civilian army is complex. It includes common folks protesting against the nobility and common thugs who become soldiers in times of war," Luo’er explained.
"So, the civilian army still can’t control its own people?" Hu Daoke scoffed.
"They’re probably local bandits that joined the civilian army when the war broke out," Luo’er analyzed, "They rove around here robbing, the Blaiqi merchants might be wealthy but they most likely wouldn’t dare confront them. So, whenever they are short of supplies, they raid these villages."
"They’re still bandits," Hu Daoke declared indignantly, "If I were in command of the civilian army, I would execute every unit like this!"
After arranging accommodation, they started strolling around the village. Luo’er and Cheng Ziang ended up discussing the matter of the bandits mentioned by village head Boen.
"Around fifty-sixty people, about half of them with rifles, possessing basic combat skills. It is a bit tricky." Luo’er sighed.
"What, are you thinking of helping them?" Cheng Ziang asked.
"Of course not," Luo’er shook his head, "I mean, if they attack us, how do we respond?"
"An army of fifty-sixty people isn’t easy to deal with, especially with those twenty-something guns they have. It’s a bit of a challenge." Cheng Ziang agreed.
"Our only advantage compared to them is our sustained firepower. There is a precedent from World War II of a squad suppressing a platoon’s attack with their automatic firepower. But we only have three guns, there are bound to be casualties if we fight, which is what I least want to see."
No matter what, Luo’er’s top priority was always to prevent casualties within the team. Even if a plan was highly effective, he would not approve it if the team cannot remain unscathed.
"Perhaps we can borrow our previous method, attacking them with such speed that they’ll think they’re under attack by a platoon’s worth of automatic firepower, forcing them to retreat," Cheng Ziang suggested.
"We need to analyze problems case by case, we can’t just apply the success of last time to the next battle. You’re making the mistake of relying on experience dogmatically," Luo’er retorted.
Upon hearing Luo’er’s critique, Cheng Ziang rolled his eyes without uttering a word.
"But our last method was quite useful, we can certainly learn from it." Pausing for a moment, Luo’er continued, "My idea is that if they appear, we first figure out their attack route, then set up several ambushes. Whether they attack or retreat, we suppress them with overwhelming firepower. If they have suppressive firepower in their team, we target them first so they can’t launch a counterattack."
Luo’er’s plan assumes that the enemy has low tactical skills and will to fight. During the rescue of Princess Melia, he could clearly sense how low the rebels’ tactical skills and fighting spirit were. If the frontline soldiers were this bad, how much better could the rear troops be?
In a way, Luo’er was also guilty of dogmatically relying on experience. If the frontline troops were this bad, he assumed that the rear troops wouldn’t be much better.
But right now, they didn’t have the time or energy to fully understand these rebels. Their current goal was still to reach Yazhi City and escape from this war that wasn’t theirs to fight.
"Since you’ve already figured it out, why bother asking me?" Cheng Ziang shrugged.
"I was just asking for your opinion, so you don’t cause trouble when we carry it out," Luo’er replied.
"Neurotic! When have I ever caused trouble? I do as I’ve been told," Cheng Ziang rolled his eyes again.
Luo’er ignored him and beckoned Baiyue and Hu Daoke, who were not far away: "Number Four, Number Five!"
"Still using code names here?" The two walked over, with Hu Daoke couldn’t help but muttered.
"Don’t mind these details," Luo’er waved his hand and said seriously, "you two need to find the high ground of the village immediately and draw maps of the village’s terrain and house distribution."
"You really want to deal with those guys?" Hu Daoke asked.
"Just in case. If they come to kill us and we’re not prepared, wouldn’t that be a waste of good opportunities?" Luo’er explained.
"Alright, Yue’er, let’s go!" Hu Daoke waved his hand and spoke.
"We’re off..." Baiyue looked at him and whispered.
"Hmm, be careful." Luo’er waved his hand.
After sending off the two, Luo’er turned to Cheng Ziang and said, "Let’s go around and ask the villagers about these rebels."
"Crazy, I need to maintain my aloof image," Cheng Ziang said with a straight face, "That said, why didn’t you ask your Moumou to go with you!"
"As for Moumou," Luo’er turned his head to look at Tangmo, who was playing with two little girls not far away, and then said, "Moumou needs to take care of those two little girls. Do you want to go instead?"
"Let’s go, which house should we start with?" Cheng Ziang changed his face faster than turning a book over. Obviously, compared to serving two little girls, he prefered to deal with the villagers.
After visiting the houses and combining the map provided by the sniper team, Luo’er estimated the route that the rebels often take to enter the village, more so, he set up several ambush points. If they suddenly attacked, Luo’er was confident that he could catch them unprepared.
At night, the village head brought out their best food to entertain Luo’er and his team. Although it seemed very shabby, they were moved. After all, given the current turmoil and the frequent raids on the village, it was quite good that the village head could entertain them with these things.
The accommodation wasn’t much better, the only decent guest room in the village head Boen’s house was given to the girls of the advance team. The few men had to squeeze into another narrow room to spend the night.
The room had no bed, the floor was wooden and covered with straw, but it could hardly resist the damp chill. Fortunately, they had sleeping bags. The three of them crawled into the warm sleeping bags and endured a cold night.
At dawn, village head Boen got up to start his day. The two little girls got up early, running about outside the room, waking up the advance team.
Luo’er rubbed his eyes and got up willingly to help with the work. Cheng Ziang and Hu Daoke looked at each other with sleep in their eyes, their faces full of discontent.
Luo’er helped for a while, and it wasn’t long before daybreak. The cold morning fog filled the mountains and forests, enveloping the entire village in obscurity.
Everyone in the advance team woke up, and the girls also joined the work. Only Cheng Ziang and Hu Daoke sat in the chair with their eyes half-closed, looking like two walking dead, their faces full of sleep.
Breakfast was not yet ready when the thing Luo’er was most worried about happened. A villager staggered into the village chief’s house and told them that the rebels had arrived.
The village had set up an outer lookout to observe the tracks of these rebels. In the morning, they found that these men had appeared less than five kilometers from the outskirts of the village, so they hurried back to report.
Faced with the heavily armed rebels, these villagers had no resistance whatsoever. The only thing they could do was to evacuate the entire village and return after the rebels had withdrawn. The loss was no longer important as long as everyone was safe.
Hearing the villager’s report, Cheng Ziang, who was in a daze, suddenly opened his eyes, scaring the villager who had come to report. He and Luo’er looked at each other, then nodded tacitly, then slapped Hu Daoke on the face.
Hu Daoke was awakened by a slap. He muttered a few curse words and then turned back to the room to get his weapon.
Luo’er spread the map he drew yesterday on the table, then asked the villager who reported the news about the direction of the rebels’ attack. The villager pointed out a rough direction. This direction happened to be the route often taken by these rebels. Luo’er and Cheng Ziang looked at each other and nodded, then shouted: "All units enter first-level combat readiness, check your weapons, and follow the predetermined plan to enter the ambush position."
"Wait," Boen came out to stop them, looking worried, "Don’t try to be brave, leave the village with us."
"Don’t worry, these guys are just a piece of cake for us. Village chief, you quickly tell everyone to leave the village." Luo’er said.
"But you, they are very strong. We tried to resist once before, but those who resisted were killed. You are travellers wandering around, there’s no need to lose your lives here." Boen said with concern.
"Rest assured, we can handle them. You all leave the village immediately, just wait for our good news, and by the way, could you please take care of Yaning for us!" Luo’er confidently spoke.
