Chapter 1407: Chapter 1400: On the Verge
The gaze returned to Cheng Ziang’s side, and after ten days of hijacking, the trio had, by their own strength, hijacked over four convoys and destroyed a large amount of supplies.
Although Cheng Ziang had said not to take anything, Hu Daoke still went and took some daily necessities they needed, eventually filling their hiding place with the plundered goods and food.
Cheng Ziang was not blinded by the immediate victory; he constantly tried to think from the standpoint of the three major aristocratic families regarding these raids.
In fact, in these ten days, they had hijacked over six convoys in total. The reason they only took four was that the other two belonged to the Yichuan Clan. This undoubtedly sent out a huge signal that the attackers were only targeting the other two major aristocratic families and not the Yichuan Clan.
As long as they could make the other two major families realize this, their attack this time would be considered largely successful.
However, Cheng Ziang estimated that they might face a full-fledged encirclement next, and among those encircling them would not only be the two families, but surely also people from the Yichuan Clan. They wanted to capture the trio to prove that these assaults were unrelated to the Yichuan Clan.
On the eleventh day, the three people went about their usual routine in search of potential convoys. Through the telescope, Cheng Ziang saw a grandiose convoy moving from south to north, the number of people exceeding two hundred.
Generally speaking, they would certainly not bother with such a large convoy. After all, there were just three of them, and they didn’t want to attract bad luck. But what surprised Cheng Ziang was that halfway through, the convoy of more than two hundred inexplicably stopped and began setting up camp.
He looked up at the sky, which was at high noon; there was obviously no need to stop and set up camp, so these people’s actions were very abnormal.
"What’s the situation? They’re setting up camp in the middle of the day." Through the telescope, Hu Daoke also saw the scene a few hundred meters away and couldn’t help but speak out.
"The guard seems very lax; are they hoping to be attacked by us?" Cheng Ziang took a glance and couldn’t help but comment.
"Wow, are they laying a trap for us?" Hu Daoke looked at him and asked.
"Pretty stupid," Cheng Ziang shrugged and continued to observe through the telescope.
"Shall we strike?" Hu Daoke asked, his face full of anticipation.
"People are stupid, and you’re being stupid too; that’s over two hundred people, not twenty-some," Cheng Ziang rolled his eyes as he spoke.
"Over two hundred lame ducks, that’s all. Besides, we still have backup; what’s there to fear?" Hu Daoke said dismissively.
"Don’t act recklessly," Cheng Ziang said without looking back.
Now he understood that his own restrictions on the use of force were indeed a rare trait. If Hu Daoke were managing Liseya, he probably would have already summoned her and charged in by now.
Hu Daoke had a blood thirst in his chest and was utterly indifferent to such slaughter; as long as the opponent took up arms, he could kill without remorse. So in a sense, the most powerful forces should be in the hands of those who can most restrain themselves.
"There’s a particularly lavish carriage in the middle of the convoy; it looks like it might be some important person," Hu Daoke noticed, exclaiming as if he had discovered a New Continent.
"I see it; don’t shout," Cheng Ziang said irritably.
Following the direction he pointed, Cheng Ziang saw the unique carriage, its decoration exquisite, with all kinds of reliefs and metal edging giving the carriage an altogether different flair.
Unlike the carriages of the Western Continent, the carriages of the East Continent were very large, akin to a small room, requiring at least ten horses to pull. Cheng Ziang estimated roughly that such a carriage could easily fit twenty to thirty people.
Such a luxurious and massive carriage would definitely not carry ordinary people inside. Thinking of this, Cheng Ziang too was tempted. If this person belonged to one of the two major aristocratic families, then by taking him out, wouldn’t the conflict between those two families and the Yichuan Clan become even more irreconcilable?
"Old Cheng, shall we make a move?" Hu Daoke turned his head, asking with anticipation.
"We’ll see how it goes," Cheng Ziang said, somewhat hesitantly.
"Ah come on, what’s there to see? Just look at how lax the guard is; do it, and it’s done," Hu Daoke obviously felt Cheng Ziang’s hesitation and kept egging him on.
"If these are people from the Yichuan Clan, then wouldn’t our efforts be wasted?" Cheng Ziang said hesitantly.
"Then before we fight, why not just ask to make sure?" Hu Daoke said nonchalantly.
"Why are you so excited, kid?" Cheng Ziang glanced at him disapprovingly and asked, puzzled.
"Addicted to ambushing, you know. This rare thrill—it’s not something you can experience elsewhere," Hu Daoke chuckled.
"I’ve had it with you," Cheng Ziang sighed helplessly.
"Then, shall we take up the rear?" Hu Daoke asked, holding his gun.
"What rear? The three of us should go together; don’t split up," Cheng Ziang rejected his suggestion.
Three people against two hundred—if they were to spread out, real trouble would ensue.
"Alright, I was just waiting for those words," Hu Daoke said excitedly as he unlocked the safety on his machine gun.
With their minds made up, Cheng Ziang took a deep breath, and the three of them stepped out of the bushes and swaggered down the main road towards the encamped caravan.
The guards quickly noticed the approaching trio and stood in their way, asking with caution, "Who goes there?"
"Just passing by. Is this road your private property?" Cheng Ziang’s Kyushu language was getting more fluent.
"This stretch of road is not convenient, please take a detour," the guard said, his hand on the hilt of his sword, which he had already drawn a third of the way out.
"What do you mean? Why don’t you guys go through the woods and let us take the main road?" Unable to contain himself, Hu Daoke shouted loudly. But he was yelling in the Demon Clan language, which immediately put the guards on high alert.
"Who exactly are you?" the guard asked, squinting his eyes warily.
"Which aristocratic family do you belong to, being so overbearing?" Cheng Ziang interjected, blocking Hu Daoke, not answering the guard but instead took the initiative to question back.
"We are from the Dangyang Family, currently escorting a VIP. Please do us a favor and do not trouble us," the guard answered cautiously.
"From the Dangyang Family..." Cheng Ziang sensed something off in the guard’s words.
If he had been the guard, he definitely would not have voluntarily disclosed his origin or what he was doing to strangers. With just a light inquiry, this guard spilled the beans like a bamboo tube pouring out peas. It was as if he was saying, "We’re not from the Yichuan Clan, come rob us quickly."
Realizing something was amiss, Cheng Ziang nodded, took a deep breath, and said to the guard, "Fine, forgive our intrusion. We’ll go back the way we came and won’t approach you any further."
"What, what are you doing?" Hu Daoke was taken aback as he saw Cheng Ziang turn around and couldn’t help but ask.
"No more talk, let’s go quickly—it might be a trap," Cheng Ziang glared at him and whispered.
"Hold on," suddenly, a crisp unsheathing sound came from behind him, followed by the guard’s stern call, "Who are you really, and why are you speaking in a language we don’t understand? Are you spies from the Demon Clan?"
Before even Cheng Ziang could turn around, he heard the clashing of metal, and then a broken sword flew past him, spinning as it lodged into the trunk of a tree by the road.
The very thing Cheng Ziang feared most had happened. As he turned around, he saw Feng’s longsword thrust out, directly piercing through the chest of the guard who still held the broken sword.
"You all are asking for death, die!" Without another word, Hu Daoke raised his machine gun and unleashed a barrage of bullets on the guards.
Clearly, that guard had not only drawn his sword but even attacked Cheng Ziang, which is why he got his blade chopped by Feng and was killed. Cheng Ziang was well aware of Feng’s actions; she would definitely intervene if a companion’s life was at risk.
"Forget it, let’s take care of them." With things as they were, Cheng Ziang could no longer say much, so he picked up his rifle, gritted his teeth, and issued the command.
