Chapter 1375: Chapter 1368: Breaking into the Mansion
"Um, thank you!" Feng nodded obediently, but her expression was visibly excited.
"Don’t mention thanks. Your safe return is the greatest comfort to me," Hu Daoke laughed heartily.
Watching Feng leave, Cheng Ziang spoke in a teasing tone, "I didn’t realize you cared so much about her."
"Don’t get the wrong idea," Hu Daoke withdrew his gaze and gave him a pointed look, "I already have a family; I don’t get involved in that sort of nonsense. I truly see her as a younger sister. I’ve always been used to being the ’younger brother,’ so it’s rare for me to have someone to look after..."
Speaking of which, he seemed to remember something and turned his head to squint and ask, "Right, speaking of which, someone just now said they wanted me to be the grandpa and they’d be the grandson."
"Ah, who said that?" Cheng Ziang asked in shock, "Who would be so shameless?"
"Shameless bastard." Hu Daoke was amused by his reaction and took the opportunity to kick him.
"Prepare for battle!" After the jest, Cheng Ziang regained his composure and shouted the command loudly.
"I’ve been ready!" declared Hu Daoke, patting his magazine with full confidence.
The entire street was blocked off by Dongsheng’s military forces; it was the main route to the commanding officer’s mansion, and couriers were seen running to and fro occasionally.
But the calm was shattered by two loud gunshots. Suddenly, there was a flash in the distance, and a soldier who had been hit screamed as he fell to the ground, alerting everyone. While remaining vigilant, Dongsheng’s troops tasked with defending the street dispatched a squad to search for the source of the flash.
However, they didn’t realize they had already fallen into a well-prepared trap. Not far from the street, the squad was hit with relentless and intense gunfire.
And this was not the feeling of being struck by musketry; the dead had gruesomely large bullet holes, larger than fists in their bodies, and blood spattered everywhere, staining the cobblestone pavement red.
In just over ten seconds, the entire squad was annihilated, their flesh and blood scattered so that not even a whole body could be found.
Initially shocked, the soldiers defending the street quickly sent another squad to investigate. But, expectedly, this squad was soon completely wiped out by the intensive gunfire, with blood now flowing like rivers in the cracks between the cobblestones.
Following this, none dared to advance; they all huddled behind the barricades set up on the street, not even daring to raise their heads.
Before long, one of the generals in charge of defending the street arrived, cursing his troops harshly. Ignoring everyone’s advice, he picked up his weapon, took a squad, and went off to search for the attackers.
He had just reached the scene, strewn with limbs and blood, when the sound of gunfire erupted. He felt a sharp pain in his abdomen and a numbness spreading through his body, and he fell to the ground without making a sound.
In the end, the Yuanzi Effect was the bane of Cultivators. Once their Inner Core was detonated by the Yuanzi Group, even the strongest Cultivator was rendered useless. Moreover, their Inner Core would attract the Yuanzi Group to enter and react, which was almost unavoidable, unless the Yuanzi Group exploded upon collision before entering the Inner Core.
It was also for this reason that the Advance Team never dared to fire in Feng’s direction for cover, fearing her Inner Core would attract the Yuanzi Group and disable her completely.
As expected, this squad met the same fate, slaughtered utterly. At this point, no one dared to advance voluntarily. Realizing this, Cheng Ziang and Hu Daoke began firing at the street’s fortifications, intending to escalate the situation and draw more people in.
While Cheng Ziang and his group were causing a commotion, Feng deftly scaled the eaves and walls, slipping into the mansion of the commanding officer as silently as a black cat.
This was an incredibly luxurious mansion, which before the fall of Big South East Peace, had been an official residence of the Demon Clan. Although the Demon Clan practiced a tribal system, their architectural style clearly absorbed elements from Kyushu—it wasn’t the tents or thatched huts one might imagine—hence the people of Kyushu could move in without any sense of incongruity.
As the invasion of the Kyushu Empire brought grave disasters to the people of West Outer Heaven, it also objectively led to the cultural assimilation of the Demon Clan, absorbing customs and traditions from Kyushu. Whether in architecture, attire, or even their language and script, the Demon Clan had more or less borrowed from the style of Kyushu.
To a certain degree, West Outer Heaven, especially the southwest regions, could essentially be considered part of the cultural sphere of Kyushu. This was one of the main reasons why the Kyushu Empire was so keen on conquering the southwest of West Outer Heaven—they felt living there was no different from being in Kyushu itself.
After infiltrating the mansion, Feng began to look for her targets, guided by her intuition. Her senses were extremely sharp, allowing her to easily discern whether the nearby enemies were ordinary people or cultivators.
It seemed the frequent lectures from Luo’er had a significant impact on Feng’s infiltration tactics; when encountering servants or slaves who were irrelevant to the mission, she mostly sidestepped them, or knocked them out directly if she couldn’t avoid them, without deliberately taking their lives.
In this regard, she truly captured the essence of the Advance Team’s methods; although they had killed many, they typically didn’t resort to lethal force unless the other party was an enemy, a quality befitting the citizen of a highly civilized nation.
However, when it came to armed soldiers, she was less merciful, snapping their necks without hesitation and hiding their bodies in the corners.
Deciding who was innocent was not for Feng to ponder. In her view, anyone bearing weapons was an enemy and had to be eliminated—the same point Luo’er had stressed repeatedly.
While emphasizing the importance of benevolence, even Luo’er would show no mercy to his enemies, for the consequences of sparing them had once led to deep regret.
The mansion was clearly a place for military officers to discuss matters, and upon seeing couriers constantly entering a room, Feng threw a Flashbang into the window without a second thought.
The detonation of the Flashbang boomed, briefly illuminating the entire room. Taking advantage of the confusion, Feng, knife in hand, barged in.
Numerous people stood inside, each pressed their hands to their ears and eyes shut, evidently in agony. Feng unsparingly swung her blade about, and promptly, five men fell into pools of their own blood.
When thinking of Dongsheng’s commanding officer, the first image that came to Feng’s mind was a man named Xuan, the one she could not forget, the one who had betrayed them, putting their lives in grave danger. Therefore, while attacking, she paid close attention to the people in the room, trying to spot the man.
Unfortunately, after scanning the area, she did not find him. Just as she was preparing to press the attack, a muscular man with his eyes closed suddenly swung a large knife at her. Feng instinctively parried with her blade, severing the weapon in a single stroke, but she couldn’t avoid being forced back by the impact.
This was a General!
Feng noticed that this was no ordinary general; she observed that he had extraordinary strength and seemed to have a magical protective layer around him, likely a general skilled in the Royal Dao of Banshan and Zhongyan. If he also mastered other techniques of the Royal Dao, he would be even more formidable.
Caught by surprise, Feng’s first reaction was to draw her gun and fire. However, as if he possessed a third eye, the man intuitively dodged once he noticed Feng aiming at him.
Although the Inner Core attracted the Yuanzi Group, the group moved swiftly, and close-range evasion could prevent the Yuanzi from being drawn by the Inner Core, causing only a slight deviation in the trajectory.
After evading, the general didn’t allow Feng any opportunity to carry on her attack and charged at her with his palms. Feng swiftly dodged, and the general, unable to stop his momentum, slapped a commander dead, his blood spraying high.
Feng’s eyes widened at his attack, and she swung her sword at him. The general, hearing the sound, blocked with his hands and managed to catch the blade barehanded.
Even more shocked, Feng quickly retreated several steps to consider her strategy. This man was too strong, capable of catching a blade of Kedal metal with his bare hands.
