Chapter 1337: Chapter 1330: The Battle of Ziye Ning
"Fire!" Seeing that all the soldiers were ready, the commander roared and swung his baton heavily.
As he gave the order, the Demon Clan’s line infantry began their first simultaneous volley, and gunshots boomed loudly while smoke shrouded everything in front of them once again.
However, the soldiers didn’t care whether they had hit anyone; after shooting, they retreated to the third row under the command to reload their bullets, while the second row continued to fire at the enemy.
The bullets hitting the metal shields emitted a shrill sound of metal clashing and tearing, accompanied by sparks flying continuously.
The bulletproof effect of the metal shields seemed ideal; three rounds of volleys hardly brought anyone down, and the Shield Wall still stood firm, staunchly bearing the Demon Clan line infantry’s volley.
Through his telescope, Cheng Ziang found the reason. It turned out that these metal shields were two centimeters thick; not to mention the flintlock smoothbore guns, even their modern rifled guns might not be able to penetrate them.
"Uh oh, we have a serious problem here; the lined shooting tactic isn’t working," Hu Daoke also lifted his telescope and uttered with schadenfreude.
"Are you happy about this? If we are defeated, are you planning to surrender or run?" Cheng Ziang glared at him and asked irritably.
"Why so fierce? We still have us; it won’t necessarily be a defeat," Hu Daoke shrugged with a slightly guilty tone.
"Go and discuss with the Demon Clan commander; prepare to engage in the battle," Cheng Ziang put down his telescope and instructed Baiyue.
"How will we engage?" Baiyue asked subconsciously.
Cheng Ziang didn’t respond but patted the Yuanzi gun in the reserve.
When a group of them found the commanding Demon Clan leader, the line infantry had already fired six rounds. Observing the battle, the Demon Clan leader looked nervously flustered, unsure of what to do.
He was a member of the Qingqiu Clan, with large fuzzy ears just like Linglan. Seeing the stalemate in the battle, his ears twitched anxiously.
"Commander, please order the mortars to fire on the Shield Wall," Cheng Ziang rode up to him and said earnestly.
"It’s very likely to hurt our own people if we do that," the Demon Clan leader showed a troubled expression.
Cheng Ziang and his group were participating as a military observation group and had the authority to provide tactical suggestions that could be directly implemented in combat. So, if the Demon Clan leader failed to take their advice and the battle turned against them, he would be responsible.
"As long as the trajectory is calculated properly, this situation can be avoided. I’ve been observing, and it seems you are very worried about the mortars accidentally hitting your own troops. But from what I’ve seen, your artillery is quite accurate, and even at a distance of ten meters from your troops, there’s no need to worry about hitting them."
Cheng Ziang paused before adding, "Moreover, we will also assist you in this battle to help you break through the Shield Wall."
After finishing, he took the Yuanzi rifle off his back and showed it to the Demon Clan leader.
"Alright, I’ll give it a try," the Demon Clan leader nodded after a moment and waved over a messenger.
Soon, the Demon Clan’s artillery began to gather their cannons, targeting the Dongsheng army’s Shield Wall as a unified attack. Due to the advantage of being on higher ground, the Demon Clan’s artillery could fire directly over the heads of the line infantry at the Shield Wall.
Under the assault of solid shots and fragmentation grenades, the Dongsheng army’s Shield Wall finally showed signs of giving way. With continuous volleys of musket fire, the Dongsheng army finally began to suffer significant casualties.
Once the heavy shields fell to the ground, it was very difficult to lift them again. Each time a shield fell, the Dongsheng army had to endure several casualties to set up the formation again.
Obviously, the Dongsheng army had devised its own plan to counter the Demon Clan’s line infantry, which involved using thick shields for defense.
However, it turned out that this plan was overly conservative, as the shields were too heavy; they could almost only be used for stationary defense and were not feasible for mobility.
In a state of static defense, the Demon Clan’s line infantry indeed had no way of dealing with them, but the Demon Clan’s army wasn’t just composed of line infantry. There were also various types of artillery deployed with the troops.
Thus, because of the shields, the Dongsheng army was almost unable to launch offensive attacks. However, their shields couldn’t fully protect them, and they still got heavily bombarded by all manner of artillery.
After briefly checking the Origin Submachine Guns, Ziang inserted the cooling components. They had three rifles to use; with the cooling components attached and firing simultaneously, the firepower was enough to pose a serious threat to Dongsheng’s shield wall.
Once ready, Ziang, Hu Daoke, and Baiyue stood on a slope, looking at the distant shield wall. Ziang suggested, "Old Hu, you take the left side; Yue’er, you take the right side; I’ll take the center. Let’s see which side collapses first."
"Is there even a need to say? Of course, my gun—it’s an ’Origin machine gun’, can anything compare to it? However, Yue’er, her gun seems semi-automatic, is that reliable?" Hu Daoke shrugged as he spoke.
"My hands are fast," Yue’er stated calmly.
"Ah, I won’t bully you guys," Hu Daoke said, waving his hand, "Come on, Little Fengye, try your hand; I’ll help you aim."
"Me, can I do it?" Feng pointed at himself, his eyes wide with a glint of excitement.
"Be careful not to let her shoot our own people," said Ziang, watching Feng’s eager demeanor, and then sternly warned.
"I got it, I got it," Hu Daoke dismissed casually, "Come on, Little Fengye, hold the gun and pull the trigger; I’ll help brace it so you don’t hit our own."
"Stop wasting time; we are not here for target practice. Every second wasted increases the risk of failure," Baiyue said, frowning, as she raised her rifle, "Ready!"
"Heh, want to use the line infantry commands?" Ziang chuckled lightly, lifting his rifle.
"Fire!" commanded Baiyue. The three of them opened fire on the distant shield wall.
The Origin Submachine Gun emitted a dull booming sound. Invisible anchors and bullets flew from the barrels toward the distant shield wall. Small explosions constantly occurred within the gun barrels, quickly heating up.
It was previously stated that the Origin Submachine Gun didn’t have a concept of range; theoretically, the range could be infinite as long as the bullets couldn’t catch up to the anchors. However, due to the curvature of the planet, direct shots on the ground would eventually encounter obstacles.
In fact, against the thick steel shields, the Origin Submachine Gun had a very minimal effect. The lethality of the Yuanzi gun stemmed from the energy explosion created by the collision and recombination of the anchor and the bullet, which resulted in almost no penetrating power; even a piece of paper could trigger an explosion between the anchor and the bullet.
But obviously, Ziang and his companions were not intending to resolve the entire shield infantry with Origin guns. Instead, by continuous intense bombardments, they aimed to undermine the morale of the Dongsheng army on the one hand, and on the other hand, force them to reveal their weaknesses, giving the line infantry a chance to attack them.
Under the powerful attack from all three sides, the Dongsheng army’s shield wall became the target of numerous hits and was battered severely.
It wasn’t long before Ziang and his party joined in, and the shield wall showed significant breaks. After two rounds of coordinated musket fire, the breaks evolved into full collapse. The heavy shields scattered down, leaving the Dongsheng soldiers without cover and almost helpless against the musket fire.
With nearly every volley, countless men fell, and as the shield wall gradually disintegrated, the morale of the Dongsheng army began to plummet. The armor worn by the troops hidden behind the shield wall was powerless against direct musket shots, and with continuous artillery barrage, the Dongsheng army soon retreated en masse.
Seeing the enemy’s inclination to retreat, the commander of the line infantry immediately ordered a change of formation, and after the final volley, he led a charge directly, confronting the fleeing enemies in hand-to-hand combat.
The demoralized Dongsheng army did not even dare to confront the bayonet charge of the Demon Clan line infantry and fled in disarray, continuously being caught and stabbed by the Demon Clan soldiers.
For a time, the situation turned completely one-sided. Without the protection of the shield wall, the Dongsheng army didn’t even have the courage to face the line infantry head-on.
