Chapter 1309: Chapter 1302: Predawn Raid
"Just give her an order; if anyone dares to bully her, chop them up. That would be the end of it," Hu Daoke said dismissively.
"Nonsense," Tangmo glared at him and scolded, "We’ve finally established a foothold in West Outer Heaven. You make it sound so easy. If something goes wrong, where are we to go?"
"Eh..." Hu Daoke, a man of big build, shrunk down crestfallenly after being lectured by the petite Tangmo, at a loss for words.
"It’s quite normal to face some hardships when living under someone else’s roof. Haven’t we, Luo’er, also been working ourselves to the bone in the city like dogs? But," Cheng Ziang paused, then continued, "if you’re feeling wronged, don’t keep it to yourself. Speak up so we can figure it out together. We’re a family, and we should share our joys and voice our sorrows."
"Family..." Upon hearing these words, Feng felt an inexplicable warmth in his heart, a feeling he had never experienced before.
"Humph, humph, humph, saying such cheesy things, how cheesy!" Fulajie’er suddenly appeared from out of nowhere, materializing in the midst of the burning flames, her figure somewhat blurred.
"Don’t say that, you’re part of our family too," Cheng Ziang said with a smile.
"Hmph..." Fulajie’er made a noncommittal noise, and with the backlight of the fire, no one could see her expression. But one thing was certain—she was a sucker for this sort of talk too.
"Xiao Fula, make sure to protect Little Fengye tomorrow. If anyone bullies her, don’t forget to tip us off," Hu Daoke leaned in and said.
"What kind of person do you take me for? I’m not someone who likes to tattle," Fulajie’er huffed, "And don’t call me Xiao Fula!"
Her petite figure, combined with her tone, created an unexpectedly adorable contrast, making everyone involuntarily burst into laughter.
After a round of laughter, Cheng Ziang turned serious and said, "Starting tomorrow, we begin our battle, with our lives hanging in the balance. Everyone must take care of themselves. We are a unit, and no one can separate."
"As long as we don’t act rashly, we will all be safe," Tangmo said indifferently.
Early the next morning, the Demon Clan’s various squads began to assemble and set out, aiming to complete the first ambush before daylight fully broke.
Cheng Ziang and Tangmo followed a unit of the Demon Clan soldiers, charging for ten kilometers, and began the attack on the first stronghold.
It was a farm surrounded by large expanses of newly cultivated farmland. Because it was early morning, there were virtually no people working in the fields.
The terrain here was incredibly flat, with the village situated in the middle of the farmland, bisected by a meandering river.
Dongsheng’s army had fortified the village with temporary defense structures, and the sentinels were now standing in the watchtowers, surveying the surroundings.
However, the Demon Clan’s army didn’t bother to hide. After approaching the farmland, the leading vanguard of the Demon Clan sounded the horn, and the group of more than a hundred divided into several teams, beginning their charge toward the village.
With the prolonged sound of the horn signaling their charge, Cheng Ziang raised his gun, aimed at the distant watchtower, and pulled the trigger. Following a muffled gunshot, the watchtower exploded violently due to a Yuanzi Reaction, immediately erupting into a huge blaze.
The explosion and the horn alarmed the village defenders, who got up from their beds to face the enemy. The night sentries also climbed up the temporary towers, shooting arrows at the approaching Demon Clan soldiers from afar.
Due to being understaffed, their shooting was weak and did nothing to stop the charging Demon Clan army. Additionally, the Demon Clan soldiers coordinated well, intercepting most of the arrows with shields and swords.
Once within a distance of fifty meters, the flintlock musketeers following the squad raised their Flintlock guns and started shooting at the towers. Although the accuracy was underwhelming, the power was not to be underestimated. The wooden towers stood little chance against the direct fire of the muskets, and a Dongsheng soldier was struck by a piercing bullet, letting out a painful cry.
After a round of firing, the musketeers continued to move forward with the squad without stopping to reload. They had to wait for the squad to stop before they could have a chance to reload their ammunition, which was a fairly lengthy process, requiring the squad captain’s unified command.
Musket reloading usually took at least forty seconds, and that was considered fast. After the High-peak people arrived, they equipped them with flintlock guns and taught them loading techniques. This allowed the Demon Clan soldiers to load their ammunition in about twenty seconds, while skilled musketeers could even finish reloading in just over ten seconds, which more than doubled the efficiency of musket combat.
Since musket reloading was cumbersome, the main force in this formation was still sword-and-shield soldiers and pikemen, with musketeers merely supplementing as long-range firepower to replace crossbows.
However, with the entry of the Advance Team, the raid by the Demon Clan’s army wasn’t too difficult. Cheng Ziang and Tangmo directly targeted a wooden watchtower in the distance, conducting a sweep with their Origin Submachine Guns.
The high pressure from the Yuanzi Reaction tore through the wood, and the heat generated instantly ignited it, causing the defensive works around the village to burst into flames.
The perimeter was breached instantaneously, and soon the village erupted into chaos, with people scattering like ants. The Dongsheng soldiers, who had just managed to get their gear in order, hastily grabbed their weapons, preparing to resist the attacking Demon Clan army.
"Start firing into the village, whoever gets hit is just unlucky, hitting a general would be a score," Cheng Ziang suggested to Tangmo, holding his gun.
"Don’t be reckless, look," Tangmo frowned, pointing at the village.
Following her direction, Cheng Ziang could see that apart from soldiers, there were many farmers in the village who were mostly Kyushu peasants conscripted to stay and farm there.
Although they were innocent, the Demon Clan’s army didn’t care about that. The Beast Head Tribe’s vanguard, who were the first to rush into the village, hacked at anyone they saw. They killed very few soldiers but many innocent farmers.
"What’s going on, why do these people hack at anyone they see, can’t they distinguish?" Cheng Ziang couldn’t help exclaiming.
"This is Ancient Times warfare, and we have no right to demand they treat civilians kindly. We just have to ensure we don’t slaughter the innocent," Tangmo said with a sigh.
"Alas," Cheng Ziang sighed and then patted his Origin Submachine Gun, "Let’s try to be as accurate as possible."
The Demon Clan squad that had stormed the village soon encountered a counter-attack from the enemy, but as expected by Cheng Ziang and the others, this system could indeed effectively reduce casualties.
Sword-and-shield soldiers at the front blocked the enemy’s attacks, while pikemen in the rear continuously struck out. As the team had stopped, the two musketeers in the back finally got the chance to reload their bullets and fire at distant enemies.
Faced with this formation, the flustered Dongsheng army didn’t know how to respond, and after a few exchanges, not a single Demon Clan soldier had died, not even injured, whereas the Dongsheng side had lost several men.
Of course, the skirmish between the common soldiers was only a small part of the entire battle. The real highlight was the clash between the Advance Team of the Demon Clan and the Dongsheng General.
The Advance Team of the Demon Clan, clad in heavy armor, charged unimpeded as if in a deserted land, ordinary soldiers simply couldn’t stop them, and all hopes were placed on the General to take action.
By the time Cheng Ziang and his group arrived at the village, the Advance Team was already in combat with the Dongsheng General. The Demon Clan had also deployed ten vanguards, essentially one-on-one with the opposition, and the situation was extremely tense.
The village’s residing general primarily used the Ba Path, exchanging blows with the Advance Team of the Demon Clan, while the Royal Dao generals, having lost their advantage in distance, were being chased around by the Advance Team.
Seizing an opportunity, Cheng Ziang waited until a general had disengaged from the vanguard and fired his gun. The struck general shook, screamed in agony but was quickly hit in the face with an axe by the Demon Clan vanguard, losing his life in an instant.
After pulling out the axe, the Demon Clan vanguard turned and gave Cheng Ziang a reluctant glare, full of frustration with no outlet for it.
"Hmph, giving that unsatisfied look, we’re in battle, not a fighting contest, idiot," Cheng Ziang spat out in Chinese.
With the intervention of Cheng Ziang and Tangmo, the fight turned one-sided in an instant, and within ten minutes, all ten generals were slain, their heads cut off and hung at the waists of the Advance Team as war trophies marking their merit.
