Chapter 1277: Chapter 1270: Clash between Life and Death
"Luo’er, are you alright?" Tangmo was always the first to notice that something was wrong with Luo’er. She hurriedly crouched down to support him, her voice trembling as she asked.
"No, no problem..." Luo’er struggled to recover, his ears, which had just been somewhat bewildered, immediately were assaulted by the sounds of screams, all jumbled together.
He looked up, only to see the city walls and inside the city drenched in a sea of red, a thin mist of blood permeating the air. The Demon Clan’s defenders on the walls and the people within the city were falling to the ground, clutching their bodies and rolling back and forth in agony.
"This, this is..." Luo’er’s eyes widened in surprise at the sight.
He saw a bird dive from the sky and then suddenly explode amid the crowd. Its large crop had been the source of the explosion, causing a powerful magical fluctuation, and blasting the creature into particles, directly turning into a mist of blood.
Those caught in the blast were immediately blown away, rolling on the ground, emitting painful groans. They were actually the lucky ones because some had died instantly, unable to make even a sound.
Following that, Luo’er heard bursts of shocked cries coming from afar. Looking in the direction of the sounds, he was surprised to find that at some point a huge breach had been blown open in one of the walls. The nearby Demon Clan’s defenders were ceaselessly throwing debris into the breach, attempting to plug it.
"What’s going on here?" Luo’er obviously hadn’t yet figured out exactly what was happening before his eyes.
"Where did all these monsters come from, directly blowing themselves up. I didn’t expect the Dongsheng army to actually play rough," Hu Daoke instinctively hid in a corner, unable to stop himself from blurting out.
"It’s the Spirit Control Masters! Don’t let those beasts near the walls, they’ll tear them down," Zisu urgently shouted.
"What are Spirit Control Masters?" Tangmo asked, looking at her.
"No time to explain, let’s deal with the problem at hand first," Cheng Ziang pulled her aside then gestured for everyone to get ready, arming themselves with weapons to take care of the birds and beasts that hadn’t exploded yet.
"Leave it to me," Hu Daoke said as he climbed out of the corner and then lifted his Origin Submachine Gun, beginning to search the sky for birds that hadn’t yet exploded.
In a string of shots, the birds in the sky were easily brought down by him. They couldn’t even screech before plummeting straight to the earth.
"As expected, these birds have Magic Crystals inside them; the explosions and magical fluctuations must come from the crystals," Cheng Ziang mused as he observed the fallen birds.
"This is ’Cherry Blossoms Reappearing,’" Hu Daoke said, then raised his gun to shoot again.
A series of explosions went on for about three minutes, and the birds in the sky and the beasts on the ground had essentially all self-destructed. Looking out, it was a scene of devastation, bloodstains everywhere; the city and the city walls were filled with the screams of wounded people.
It was at this moment that the Dongsheng army finally launched a tide-like assault, led by the generals that the Demon Clan so dreaded.
"Advance Team, defend the city walls at all costs, we can’t allow them to breach the walls," Luo’er commanded loudly.
"Understood!" At the sound of Luo’er’s voice, everyone felt their blood surge with fervor.
The enemy’s main attack was directed at the western city wall, which had just been blown open. Soldiers and generals charged towards the breach in an endless stream, and the Demon Clan defenders, having just regained their composure, began to set up guns and crossbows, starting to shoot down at the attackers below.
The Advance Team sprinted to the western walls, and as soon as they arrived, they saw generals already scaling the ramparts, entangled in combat with the Beast Head Tribe’s fighters.
These ferocious-looking Demon Clan fighters relied on their powerful abilities to staunchly resist the assault of these Ba Path generals, and the battle between them was fierce.
Seeing this situation, Luo’er immediately raised his gun and shot at the generals. Because the Demon Clan didn’t have inner cores, he didn’t need to worry about the Yuanzi Group accidentally wounding allies.
With the help of the Advance Team, the city’s defenders struggled to drive away these overbearing generals. At the same time, the large-caliber cannons of the Helrandum in the sky were finally unleashed, their immense roars echoed as heavy shells hit the ground, shaking the earth and sending high columns of soil into the air.
This was the destructive power of modern warfare weapons, or long-range warfare weapons. Such explosions could shred even cultivators to pieces, who could not withstand the blasts.
As mentioned before, the evolution from sight-range warfare to long-range warfare signified not only increased range of fire delivery but also a continuous enhancement of weapon power.
During World War One, the Allies and Central Powers still adhered to the early tactics of dense infantry charges characteristic of long-range warfare. However, the overwhelming firepower at the Somme turned it into hell on earth, transforming the nature of war and fast-forwarding both sides directly into the middle and late phases of long-range warfare.
The aerial fleet once again displayed the immense destructive power brought by technology. Such formidable firepower was nearly impossible to withstand for both ordinary people and cultivators, who could only be torn to pieces by the barrage.
The aerial fleet’s artillery support caused Dongsheng’s military assault to falter. The commander of the Dongsheng army knew they had to neutralize the aerial fleet, or their ground troops would be unable to advance.
Reacting swiftly, the Dongsheng army sent their fleet of over thirty Kunzhous soaring toward the Helrandum.
Seeing the Kunzhou fleet approaching, the Helrandum didn’t hesitate, immediately climbing higher and beginning evasive maneuvers to join the protective formation of the four supply ships nearby, avoiding the Kunzhou fleet’s charge.
While adjusting the cannons, Reimer keenly noticed that one Kunzhou had not charged over but instead hovered quietly in its place.
He realized that it might very well be the command center of the Dongsheng army, so he ordered the Helrandum to align its cannons and begin charging.
On the ground, as the Helrandum could not provide immediate support, the Dongsheng army launched a fresh assault to breach the city walls.
Their archers advanced to within a hundred steps of the city wall and began their volley. The main weapon of the Dongsheng archers was the longbow, which could easily lob arrows over the city wall and into the city.
The Demon Clan defenders on the city wall showed no fear, retaliating in kind with crossbow bolts and musket fire toward the troops below.
Members of the Advance Team hid behind ramparts, lifting their Origin Submachine Guns over their heads to fire down at the enemy, avoiding the stray arrows.
Hu Daoke found an angle, set up his machine gun, and began to wildly sweep the Dongsheng troops below from the side. Every shot from the Yuanzi machine gun caused a small explosion, like firing an automatic grenade launcher, which shook the morale of the Dongsheng troops.
As the war reached its most intense phase, the Dongsheng army regrouped and climbed the city walls. Luo’er noticed that those who could climb were mostly the Ba Path generals, who possessed incredible leaping and climbing abilities, needing only a few steps to reach the top of the wall. The seemingly powerful Royal Dao generals, in contrast, had less mobility than their Ba Path counterparts.
It seemed that not everyone could cultivate both paths like Feng; both Royal Dao and Ba Path had their limitations.
Baiyue zigzagged through, finding the relatively taller watchtower on the city wall and setting up her sniper rifle to search for targets in the rear of the Dongsheng army.
She noticed that there were many cages in the back of the Dongsheng formation, which contained the same birds and beasts that had self-destructed earlier. It appeared Dongsheng intended to repeat their tactic and use these animals to attack Lingyuan City.
With this in mind, Baiyue began to look for high-value targets. She quickly noticed a man in a long robe, with unkempt hair, gesturing towards the birds and beasts in the cages.
Acting on instinct, Baiyue decided not to let him go, so she swung her rifle toward him and pulled the trigger.
A burst of semi-automatic fire hit the man, who convulsed violently and then fell stiffly to the ground, twitching incessantly. Nearby soldiers tried to help him up, but by then the man’s body had turned into a pile of mush, impossible to lift.
