Otherworld Advance Team -
Chapter 1275 - 1268: Jack of All Trades
Chapter 1275: Chapter 1268: Jack of All Trades
The artillery support wasn’t meant to help the Advance Team strike at the Dongsheng army; rather, it served as a deterrent, using superior firepower to shatter the enemy’s morale.
Because in ancient warfare, or rather, visual range warfare, morale is the most important trait to maintain combat effectiveness. An army without morale is no different than a lamb waiting for slaughter.
The continuous bombardment clearly disturbed the Dongsheng army; from the generals down to the soldiers, everyone was blinded by the explosions. Out of fear of the power of the blasts, they panicked, started to flee in all directions trying to avoid them, and completely forgot about pursuing the Advance Team.
Therefore, the members of the recovering Advance Team could finally breathe a sigh of relief—they all gathered together, waiting for the evacuation ships.
This battle exposed the weakness of the Yuanzi weapons: they are extremely dependent on the cooling devices. Without the cooling devices, Yuanzi weapons would overheat after just a few minutes of firing and cooling them again was a lengthy process.
However, no matter what, Yuanzi weapons were still the best choice for the Advance Team at this stage. Because in a battle like this, if they were to use real bullet weapons, they probably would have run out of the ammunition they carried a long time ago.
Compared to the trouble caused by overheating weapon bodies, they were more concerned about the ammunition problem. A weapon without ammunition is no different than a fire stick.
After about a few minutes, the small boats for pickup finally arrived slowly at the shore. Everyone hurriedly boarded the boat, then urged the boatmen to steer the vessel into the middle of the river and upstream into the harbor.
Because of the day’s battle, there were many floating corpses in the river, and the vessels would occasionally collide with one, causing the young women to shudder in fright.
On the boat, Cheng Ziang considered throwing his Yuanzi weapon into the water to cool it down, but Luo’er stopped him. Yuanzi weapons are not like traditional real bullet rifles; these weapons are extremely valuable, and once the barrel or chamber gets clogged with mud, it can explode.
So, no matter how hot the barrel gets, they have to wait for it to cool down naturally. At the most, they can install a cooling Rune or use magic to lower the temperature; there’s nothing else they can do.
Once they were somewhat far from the shore, everyone started to relax and then exchanged their experiences from the battle. Although it was fought in complete darkness, they could still roughly estimate the results of the combat.
After consolidating the results, Luo’er received the final outcomes of their battle. The Advance Team had killed or wounded over a hundred enemies, with the generals suffering around ten to twenty casualties, and about ten generals had been killed directly in action.
This was considered quite good considering the Advance Team comprised of so few people, who weren’t armed with atomic bombs. To have eliminated so many enemies was already stretching their capabilities.
After this battle, the Advance Team also deeply realized the formidable combat effectiveness of the generals, thus gaining a much deeper understanding of the term "Major General."
If it had been an ordinary army, the Advance Team’s attack would basically have been an overwhelming victory, and they wouldn’t have needed to retreat. However, in reality, despite their good results, they were still forced to retreat due to being overpowered by the enemy’s generals.
After this combat experience, everyone from the Advance Team also gained a deeper understanding of Feng’s combat capabilities.
Luo’er defined Feng as a battlemage, meaning a cultivator who can engage in close combat as well as cast spells from a distance.
So when the Demon Clan brought up the concept of the Royal Dao and the Ba Path, Luo’er naturally thought of Feng, thus considering that a Royal Dao general should be similar to Feng.
However, it turned out that both the Royal Dao and the Ba Path generals had their own limitations, whereas Feng appeared exceptional.
In the battles against the generals, Feng could launch long-range attacks. When the enemies tried to approach her, she could also display exquisite sword skills, relying on the divine weapons in her hands to kill her opponents in a short time.
That is to say, Feng belonged to the rare, all-around type of cultivator, capable of both close combat and long-range spellcasting, which is not the common state for cultivators of the Dongsheng Continent.
The cannon fire within the city was still ongoing, but it had visibly thinned after the Advance Team had safely boarded the ship. This was clearly thanks to Fulajie’er’s efforts; she ran back and forth, coordinating and directing the cooperation between both sides, which brought about the support of the city’s artillery fire.
"Ah, I’m so tired. I haven’t stopped since the battle began," Fulajie’er said as she returned to the group, starting to complain once she had accomplished all this.
"You’ve worked hard," Luo’er sincerely commented.
"Mm-hmm, how did I do as a commander?" Fulajie’er giggled and asked proactively.
"Great, Commander," Luo’er nodded and replied.
"Ehehe, don’t call me like that." Upon hearing Luo’er’s compliment, Fulajie’er let out a bashful sound.
"Hey, let’s not talk about these useless things right now, hurry up and tell us what you’ve grasped of the situation," Tangmo said, somewhat dissatisfied.
"Bad woman, just keep being jealous," Fulajie’er huffed twice, then spoke seriously, "Our attack this time was effective. Although our kill ratio wasn’t obvious, it thwarted the enemy’s plan to stage a night raid. The reason I had you all retreat just now is that the enemy was preparing to bring in the generals who were the main force for the night raid."
"They really were planning a night raid," everyone exchanged glances upon hearing Fulajie’er’s words, Hu Daoke couldn’t help but click his tongue.
"It seems Luo’er’s intuition is sharp," Cheng Ziang looked toward Luo’er and said with a smile.
"It’s nothing," Luo’er waved his hand, maintaining his composure, "I was simply trying to think from the perspective of Dongsheng’s army. As the saying goes, know thyself, know thy enemy, a hundred battles will not be lost. By knowing what they want to do, we can take the initiative in the war."
"But these guys are really tough to deal with, dashing around like monkeys, bullets can’t even keep up with their footsteps," Hu Daoke remarked with exasperation.
"Indeed, generals are difficult to deal with, it seems we had underestimated them, they’re not like those mages," Cheng Ziang nodded in agreement with Hu Daoke’s comment.
"Although the Royal Dao has its own methods and the Ba Path has its own, but..." Baiyue analyzed, "these generals often work well together, leaving us no opportunity to exploit."
"If only we could continue to sow discord among them," Luo’er pondered.
"How can you further divide the generals, aren’t they just one group?" Hu Daoke asked.
"Not so," Luo’er analyzed, "Even when facing a great enemy, Abisien still has internal strife, and I believe there must be conflicts among those generals too. Conflicts exist in all things; as long as it’s a group, there must be internal strife. It’s only a matter of whether we can capitalize on it."
"How about I go find that guy again?" Ziang pointed towards Dongsheng’s camp and asked.
"Never mind him, we’ve just attacked their camp, Dongsheng’s army will only be more alert, and you’ll have a hard time making contact with him," Luo’er shook his head, rejecting his suggestion.
"Right now, resolving the quandary of Lingyuan City being besieged is the top priority," Baiyue reasoned, "Anyhow, we still have the strength to fight Dongsheng’s army, there’s no need to take risks in this direction."
"Right, I think so too," Luo’er nodded.
Pausing for a moment, Luo’er looked around and then asked with concern, "Everybody’s alright, no injuries?"
"We’re all good," Hu Daoke said, suddenly pulling a face as if complaining, "though I got a blister from this damn rifle, it should count as a minor injury."
"Come on, that little scratch of yours is nothing," Cheng Ziang shrugged his shoulders.
"The boss asked us who was hurt, I’m just telling the truth," Hu Daoke said feeling wronged.
"All right, come here, I’ll apply a cold compress to it," Tangmo said, taking out the Magic Wand from her embrace.
"Feng, are you alright?" Luo’er noticed that Feng seemed to have been quiet and thus proactively asked.
"Oh, no, it’s nothing," Feng hesitated, shaking his head.
"What are you thinking about?" Luo’er asked curiously.
"I was thinking about how to deal with those generals more quickly," Feng replied truthfully.
"You’re already very impressive," Luo’er said with a smile.
"No, if I were impressive enough, I should be able to protect all of you without having you all take risks," Feng shook his head.
