Chapter 1242: Chapter 1235: Military Generals Clash
Luo’er no longer spoke; although his face was still slightly flushed, he had regained his serious expression and set his rifle on the city wall to begin adjusting the settings.
Actually, there wasn’t much to adjust, only to focus the sniper scope. Because he was using an Origin Submachine Gun that fired Yuanzi Group, it was almost unaffected by wind and gravity, only by the curvature of the planet, so things like wind drift adjustments were basically unnecessary.
In the distance, Bai Po was still in a standoff with that general, with both sides continually exchanging words but no action being taken for a long while. Zisu leaned close to Luo’er, taking the initiative to relay the conversation between the two.
Her hearing was truly remarkable; at such a distance, Luo’er could only catch the gist, yet she remembered it all.
Clearly, Bai Po had no idea who the "White Dragon remnants" mentioned by the general were, and he truly didn’t care, only waiting for the right moment to make his move.
Outside of the battlefield, members of the Demon Clan might have some interactions with the people of Kyushu, but on the battlefield, the Demon Clan wouldn’t bother listening to these people from Kyushu—who were, most of the time, attempting to persuade them to surrender in a rather arrogant manner, using the language of Kyushu.
Bai Po forcefully grounded his weapon into the earth, then pointed at the general and said, "Are we fighting or not? If not, withdraw your troops!"
"I’ve said it many times, surrender the remnants of the White Dragon, and we will spare you," the general repeated tiresomely.
"I’ve never believed the words of you people from Kyushu, nor have I ever heard of any remnants of the White Dragon. If you don’t make a move, then don’t blame me for striking first," Bai Po declared, setting up his Guan Dao.
"Are you people from the Demon Clan always this unreasonable?" the general asked, his frustration becoming apparent.
"Aren’t you people from Kyushu just as arrogant?" Bai Po replied coldly.
"It seems further talk is pointless," the general said, his expression turning increasingly stern.
"The fight is about to begin," Zisu said to Luo’er, her eyes narrowed as she watched the two of them.
The general grasped his weapon with both hands, then forcefully sank down, and Luo’er could clearly see a halo of light emanating and spreading from the general’s body. Following that, the general charged at Bai Po with his weapon raised.
"This is..." Luo’er couldn’t help but exclaim in surprise.
"This is a fundamental skill of cultivators, protective True Qi, using the Qi stored within one’s body for protection," Zisu explained nonchalantly.
Hearing her words, Luo’er seemed to think of something. He then turned his head and gazed at her intently. Faced with Luo’er’s stare, Zisu gave a slight smile, winked, and said, "Are you not going to ask why, if this is the case, Leader Bai Po dares to confront them?"
"Yes!" Luo’er nodded affirmatively.
Because he understood that whether it was True Qi or Yuanzi, in essence, it was all magic. In the Otherworld, there was only magic, hardly any other unpredictable forces.
Qi was, at its core, a method of utilizing magic. On this point, Feng’s performance was the most remarkable. She could use magic to simulate the cutting edge of a blade to attack the enemy, so rather than being called a swordsman, it would be more accurate to consider her a battle mage.
In the Otherworld, magic was almost synonymous with strength. Most of the time, mages, or those who used magic as their means of attack, were virtually undefeatable by ordinary people.
Although mages from the Western Continent couldn’t cast spells after being injured, they were still very powerful before sustaining any injuries, with almost no one daring to confront them.
Given the current situation, Bai Po appeared to be just a strong normal person, whereas his opponent, the general, was an undeniable mage. The outcome of an ordinary person fighting against a mage was predictable.
"The Leader of the Bai Po can resist the attack of this aura, and it’s not just him," Zisu said with narrowed eyes, her expression seemingly relaxed, yet Luo’er could sense the gravity in her tone. "His clansmen, those fiercer-looking members of the Demon Clan like the Xiaotian and Zilu Clans, and even those from the Bluebird and Zhuhuai Clans of Thousand Peaks Cloud Top, can all resist this aura’s attacks. This is why, whenever the Easterners invade, these clans become the primary resistance in West Outer Heaven. Once they fall, West Outer Heaven will have no defensible position."
"What about you? What role do you play in the war?" Luo’er asked curiously.
"What do you mean, do you think our clan is dragging down Abisien?" Zisu asked as she looked at Luo’er.
"No, no, not at all, I just wanted to inquire about your division of responsibilities. If you feel that my question is offensive, then I apologize in advance," Luo’er quickly waved his hands and said.
"I know you didn’t mean anything by it, just wanted to tease you," Zisu said, smiling happily once again before continuing seriously, "If the Dongsheng Empire sends an army without Generals, only regular soldiers, then we could counter-kill them since we have mastered the secret of flame."
"The secret of flame?" Luo’er asked.
"Exactly, it’s a secret, and I cannot tell you for now," Zisu said proudly.
"Could it be gunpowder?" Luo’er ventured a guess.
"Gunpowder?" Zisu didn’t understand at first because this was a word cobbled together by Luo’er on the spot, not a standard term used by the Demon Clan.
"It’s a kind of black powder that burns intensely. Its main ingredients are sulfur, saltpeter, and charcoal," Luo’er said, gesturing.
"How do you know about this?" Zisu asked, her eyes wide with utter shock.
"Such technology is not a big deal," Luo’er said with a wry smile as he spread his hands, "On the contrary, we should be surprised that you’ve managed to develop gunpowder for war on your own. Indeed, war is the primary driving force behind technological progress."
"So you mean, you’ve already..." Zisu grabbed Luo’er’s hand, her voice trembling as she asked.
"We have long since moved past playing with such things," Luo’er replied truthfully.
The Demon Clan of the East Continent had entered the firearm era, something Luo’er had not expected. On reflection, it made sense that the overwhelming power of the Cultivators forced them to look for other means of combat, leading to the accidental discovery of gunpowder.
One might conjecture that without the Cultivators, relying solely on regular infantry, the Dongsheng Empire would never have been able to invade West Outer Heaven—or at least not achieve the significant victories they had today.
While the two talked, Bai Po and the General had been engaged in combat for over twenty exchanges, with no clear victor. Relying on their armor’s protection, they both struck with wide, heavy blows, their weapons clashing with loud metallic sounds, making it seem as though they were more intent on shattering each other’s weapons than killing their opponent.
In their melee, traditional fighting skills ceased to exist; each was trying to land heavy, powerful blows on the other, aiming to break through the armor.
For the General, he didn’t even need to focus on defense; he could continually attack because his True Qi acted as another layer of armor. Unless Bai Po struck a critical weak spot with a powerful blow, it was almost impossible to inflict fatal damage on him.
They exchanged blows for about half an hour with hardly any sign of stopping, a show of stamina that left Luo’er in awe. The weapons they wielded were clearly heavy, and to maintain such high-intensity combat without rest for half an hour was no easy feat.
Following a series of heavy clashing sounds, both stepped back and propped their weapons on the ground, panting heavily. After about forty minutes of fighting, their physical strength finally faltered, and they had to pause the battle to recover.
However, the General now showed a look of fear, for after more than forty minutes of fighting, the magic power within him had nearly depleted. If they continued, he would lose his protective True Qi. At that point, he would have to endure Bai Po’s attacks with his physical body alone.
