Chapter 1196: Chapter 1189: Incompetent Father
"Sir..." On the way, a Wood Elf half-breed girl timidly called out to Luo’er.
"What’s the matter?" Luo’er turned around, trying to make his tone as gentle as possible.
"Does Father not want us anymore?" The girl’s eyes widened, her flawless pupils brimming with glistening tears.
"That’s not true, I’m taking you to your new home." Luo’er shook his head somewhat absently, then said to her with conviction.
The girl didn’t say anything else but lowered her head, and soon Luo’er heard her sobbing. Then, as if it were contagious, the other children began to cry as well.
Seeing this, Luo’er felt his head swell and quickly crouched down to comfort them softly, "When you get to your new home, there will be a lot of people who love you, you won’t suffer or be bullied anymore, can you believe me?"
"I’m scared..." the girl said with her head down, murmuring aggrievedly.
"Scared of what?" Luo’er asked.
"I don’t know..." The girl shook her head.
"There’s no need to be afraid or worry," Luo’er sighed softly, then comforted her patiently, "I’m also an Elf half-breed, if you don’t mind, from now on I will be your family."
"You..." Hearing his words, the girl looked up at Luo’er, her large eyes filled with amazement.
The girl had a pair of dark green pupils as beautiful as Luo’er’s. Her eyes were large, appropriately so, neither fearfully oversized nor like those of common folk.
As finely sculpted porcelain dolls carved by the Ancestors, almost all members of the Elf Race tended to share consistent facial features, a uniform beauty that was initially stunning but with time became customary.
"I’m also a Wood Elf half-breed, I can guarantee with my life that you won’t be wronged again. Once you step into Lipei, you step into heaven," Luo’er continued.
The girl just stared at him blankly, unsure if she understood his words.
"Can I carry you there?" Luo’er thought for a moment, then tilted his head and asked.
"Can you, even though I’m very dirty?" the girl asked with wide eyes, surprised.
She was wearing a sundress bought hastily; through the neckline, one could still see the coarse commoner’s clothes beneath.
"It’s okay, I don’t mind," Luo’er said with a smile as he picked up the girl and then took the other children by the hand.
Gazing at the Luo’er close by, the girl mustered the courage to curiously poke his cheek, and he responded with a smile. His tender smile seemed to melt away the defenses in her heart, and at last, her eyes no longer showed a hint of fear.
With five children in tow, Luo’er made his way to the Welfare Institution. At this moment, the Welfare Institution was still a temporary structure; the real welfare institution was still under construction in the mountains.
The main building of the Welfare Institution was made of prefabricated houses. However, thanks to the breakthroughs in material science on Earth, these houses produced on Earth and assembled in the Otherworld could easily be stacked into several stories, turning into a building.
Even the temporary welfare institution was still under construction, and currently, only a few of the prefabricated houses were habitable. At the entrance of the Welfare Institution, a dozen workers from Earth were registering the children who were checking in, sitting behind tables and chairs; some Earth nurses excitedly ran around, hugging the Otherworld children as if they adored these children from another world.
"Ah, a big Elf and little Elves!" Seeing Luo’er and his group arrive, a somewhat youthful-looking girl immediately pointed at Luo’er and exclaimed.
"What nonsense, that’s Luo’er," her companion corrected.
"Such cute children, can I hold one?" a girl ran up to Luo’er and asked him with eyes seeking permission.
"Please do as you wish, I’m here to check these children in; they’re..." Luo’er didn’t finish his sentence before the children by his side were snatched away by the nurses. The Elf half-breeds, in particular, were in high demand, and there was even some rivalry over them.
Due to Tana’s long-term Influence, Elf half-breeds had always been marginalized in the Otherworld, but to Earthlings, these children were nothing short of chosen ones, precious gems bestowed by heaven.
The Earth scientists initially put the Elf Planet Project on hold for a variety of reasons. In fact, it was hard to find many people on Earth who opposed the plan; most were very welcoming of elfinization.
Although occasionally someone would brazenly speak out about pure bloodlines. But such outdated arguments quickly got drowned out in the wave of enthusiasm for the Elf Race.
The frenzied actions of these young female caregivers genuinely scared the children, and the little Elf-Wood Elf hybrid girl hid in Luo’er’s arms, trembling as she watched them in terror.
Fortunately, at this moment, an older female caregiver arrived, frowning as she scolded the younger ones, finally putting an end to their squabble.
"Luo’er, you’re here again." The older female caregiver had just finished scolding the girls with a stern face, but quickly switched to a smiling demeanor, softly calling out to Luo’er.
"Uh, oh, oh, yes." Luo’er was stunned for a while, before he stuttered a response.
"Don’t you recognize me? I held you when you were little," the caregiver said with a beaming smile, "You were so cute back then, it’s hard to believe you’re all grown up now... Well, not that grown up, you’re still adorable."
"Thank you for your concern, Auntie..." Luo’er said with an awkward laugh and a smile.
"Eh, is this your child?" the caregiver asked, looking at the girl in Luo’er’s arms.
"Oh, this is my friend’s child, not mine. I’m just responsible for bringing them here..." Luo’er explained.
"Oh," the caregiver seemed slightly disappointed, then smiled and said, "She really looks like you when you were younger."
"She’s a girl, though she’s also a Wood Elf hybrid..." Luo’er replied, still with an awkward smile.
"Leave her to me. I’ll take her to her new home," the caregiver offered, reaching out her hand.
"Okay," Luo’er nodded, then comforted the girl, "Alright, it’s time for you to go to your new home. I’ll come to see you when I can."
The girl seemed very reluctant to leave Luo’er, clinging to his clothes while being held by the caregiver. It took some effort for Luo’er to pull away.
"You were much cuter than her when you were little," the caregiver said with a smile as she took the child from him.
Faced with the caregiver’s teasing, Luo’er could find no words to reply, only blushing and looking away.
Just as he was about to turn away, he suddenly felt something grab his leg. Looking down, it was Yaning, the Masya girl orphaned by an explosion, whom the Advance Team had brought back from Masya.
"Daddy!" Yaning looked up at Luo’er and as soon as their eyes met, she called out happily.
"Luo’er, you already have a child? That was fast," the caregiver said in surprise.
"No, don’t misunderstand," Luo’er quickly picked up Yaning, then explained helplessly, "This child was rescued from Masya. Her parents died in an explosion, and she seems to have suffered a trauma to her brain from it, so she might have mistaken me for her father."
"Poor child," the caregiver sighed, "No wonder she’s been looking so absent-minded and silly, always talking about how her daddy will come to see her. I thought she really had a father who would come for her."
"Is that what she said?" Luo’er was even more surprised after hearing the caregiver’s words.
"Yes, she’s always mumbling to herself, saying that her daddy will come to see her and such. I thought some irresponsible father had abandoned her, but it seems I misunderstood."
"Sigh, no, her father really was irresponsible..." Luo’er said, lowering his head in shame.
"Daddy?" Yaning tilted her head and looked innocently at the distressed Luo’er.
Luo’er sighed softly, then reached out to pat her little head and said to the caregiver, "So, um, I’ll take her out for a walk, is that okay?"
"Oh, no problem, as long as she’s your child. Just let the front desk know on your way out," said the caregiver, nodding.
