Chapter 1182 - 1175
Chapter 1182: 1175
"Our current enemy is the Shani people from Lipei, so please don’t say anything that might hinder unity at this time, okay?" Pelas said with some helplessness.
"I have a lot of experience dealing with Otherworlders. They are humans too; they can only use weapons to kill. As long as we are fast enough, we can achieve our goals before they can react," Fredel took a deep breath and said.
"You think you understand Earth people better than Earth people?" Car asked coldly and sarcastically.
"Of course, I understand you more than you do, unlike some people who don’t even have the most basic self-awareness," Fredel said with a mocking laugh.
In fact, tactically speaking, Fredel’s confidence was completely justified; breaking through Lipei’s defense would threaten the safety of the civilians below the city.
Perhaps even he could not imagine how much the headquarters cared for the lives of these residents; if they weren’t worried about these people’s inability to adapt to life on Earth, they would have moved them to Earth long ago.
But the problem was that the success of breaking through the defense depended on headquarters not noticing their intentions, which would give them the chance to break through the defensive lines and approach Lipei.
However, the current situation was that their every move was being reported to the Lipei side by Fulanta, an insider. It meant that whatever they planned to do, Lipei would be able to detect their intentions at the first moment and take countermeasures.
It had to be said that placing Fulanta among these people was one of the best things Cheng Ziang had done. Through Fulanta, he not only learned the truth behind the attacks on Luo’er but also became aware of their conspiracy against Lipei.
These people had always been somewhat distrustful of Fulanta, but Saiye had spoken up for him time and again, which occasionally made Fulanta inexplicably grateful to Saiye.
But the truth told him that if it weren’t for Saiye, Cheng Ziang and his people would never have approached him. If Cheng Ziang hadn’t been insightful, he and his family would probably have died innocent deaths long ago.
Thinking of this, Fulanta not only felt no gratitude toward Saiye but also felt his resentment towards him grow deeper. In practical terms, this meant collecting intelligence for the headquarters with even greater diligence.
"In any case, Commander Fredel, Mr. Car has come specifically to help us fight against the Shani people, and we share the same interests. I ask you to consider his advice, for my sake," Saiye attempted to make peace.
"I welcome brave suggestions, but I must decline if they are cowardly," Fredel seemed full of confidence in himself.
"Blind confidence can lead to big trouble," Car said coldly.
"I know my limits, and that’s none of Mr. Car’s concern," Fredel responded with a cold laugh, "I just hope that when danger strikes, Mr. Car won’t sprout wheels on his feet."
"Hmph!" Car, hearing his mockery, no longer engaged but snorted coldly.
"I feel there’s something off about this Otherworlder; his arrival has thrown us into chaos, causing strife among us. I suspect he might be a spy sent by the enemy," Fulanta began to stir the pot.
"Don’t say that. After all, the Manikens and the Shani people are mortal enemies. They’ve helped us a lot in this assault, and Mr. Car’s position is still very firm," Saiye reassured.
"All I hope now is that he won’t mess things up. If this carries on, I’ll find my own way to take care of my revenge," Fulanta glanced at Car and left.
As the troops assembled, the over two-thousand-strong rebel force began to prepare for the attack. Fulanta wanted to find a chance to send a message back, but as he was closely watched by these people, he had no opportunity for a detailed report. He could only write a short message when unobserved and then found a moment to send it back.
"The sparrows have flown the nest, they’re preparing to attack!" Seeing the brief phrase on the note, Cheng Ziang immediately went to report to Wang Xu.
With the enemy starting to move, Lipei’s side was finally stirring into action. Uncertain of the exact route of the enemy’s advance and whether they would divide their forces, the Joint Command Center decided to split the interception troops into three teams to set up ambushes on three potential paths.
After the three troops reached the designated locations, they began digging tunnel shelters and laying mines on the flat roads. At the same time, the Mobile Troop began full-force reconnaissance, trying to find and monitor the enemy’s movements.
As the enemy launched their assault, Ziang’s special operations were approved, and the mountain units had already set off, secretly arriving at the periphery of the target area to stand by. The squads responsible for special operations missions had all boarded a Ronisca support ship for Earth and were advancing towards the target area.
The three troops entered their respective defensive positions to intercept, spending almost two days digging temporary trenches and starting to stockpile combat supplies to face a potential enemy invasion.
At this time, everyone was on full alert, quietly waiting for the arrival of the enemy. As the mission was to annihilate the enemy forces, the interception troops were ordered to lessen their firepower, not carrying field artillery but only a small number of mortars and rocket launchers for defense, awaiting the enemy’s convergence to strike a fatal blow.
By the early morning of the ninth day, the soldiers responsible for defending the middle route were curled up in the trenches, drowsy. These past two days, they had continuously strengthened their trenches until the entire position finally looked like something substantial.
The road this troop was intercepting lay between two hills over a hundred meters high, with many large boulders in the valley. They had laid tripwire mines in the valley for an early warning, while they dug trenches on the slope at the valley’s exit in anticipation of the potential attack.
In the early hours, the duty sub-species person was chatting with a few Aud soldiers squeezed together in the trench. This sub-species was a half-breed of the Aud, casually smoking a cigarette, regaling the soldiers with tales of an idyllic life on Earth.
All eyes were envious as they looked at the cigarette in his hand, so after taking a few drags, he passed it to the soldiers, letting them take turns smoking it.
Watching the soldiers scramble over it, the sub-species man couldn’t hide his smug smile, filled with a sense of superiority. It must be said that despite the headquarters’ repeated calls for equality, some still believed themselves to be superior to those of Otherworld, and so these sub-species would always regard these soldiers as subordinates.
Moreover, their gear was different from that of the soldiers, who wore old-style bulletproof vests and helmets from over thirty years ago. To protect these precious sub-species, headquarters provided them with excellent bulletproof vests, which were lined with special materials and Defense Runes to enhance the protection of the armor.
Besides, their helmets were fully enclosed and also etched with intricate runes, ensuring maximum head safety. Compared to the soldiers, each of these sub-species was dressed like a fearless warrior.
Just as he was feeling proud, suddenly, a loud explosion erupted outside the trench, instantly reverberating through the silent night sky.
Startled, he quickly grabbed his Model 47 bullpup rifle leaning against the side and cautiously popped his head out.
As it was a dark and windy night, no one could see what exactly was happening outside. After scouting for a moment, he turned back to the soldiers and said, "Fire a flare!"
"Yes!" one of the soldiers nodded, then fumbled for an illumination mortar shell and stuffed it down the barrel.
With a muffled boom from the position, the shell was launched into the sky, then its parachute deployed to drift down slowly, casting a dazzling white light.
Under the glare of the white light, the sub-species man was shocked to discover that the valley, once full of boulders, now teemed with dense shadows. Surprised, he took a deep breath, and then shouted, "Enemy attack!"
Accompanied by his shout, the position instantly buzzed with activity, as soldiers scrambled to check their weapons, and then took up their defensive positions; the sub-species soldier, without any hesitation, aimed in the general direction and pressed the trigger.
