Chapter 1167: Chapter 1160: Clue Tracking

"It’s nothing; leaving my post for the sake of Captain Luo’er is trivial." The five people waved their hands dismissively.

"One thing at a time. While we must avenge Luo’er, you can’t just abandon your posts willy-nilly," Cheng Ziang shook his head.

Before long, Hu Daoke hurried over with Feng in tow. She was holding a long saber with a murderous expression on her face – if Cheng Ziang had seen her for the first time, he would most likely have been intimidated by her demeanor.

"What’s going on here..." Cheng Ziang looked her over and asked.

"Uh, I accidentally let it slip on the way here, and now she looks like she wants to kill someone," Hu Daoke scratched his head in self-defense, "Anyway, we’re all going to investigate the attack on the boss, so it’s fine for her to know, right?"

"You..." Cheng Ziang sighed and then lowered his voice to comfort her, "Feng, Luo’er is fine; he’ll recover soon. Let’s deal with the matter at hand and find the mastermind to avenge Luo’er."

"Hmm!" Feng hummed coldly with her head lowered, her rage clearly not subsiding any time soon.

"Listen up, I don’t care how angry you are, but without my order, you are not to act recklessly. If you inadvertently ruin the leads, then Luo’er’s suffering will have been in vain, got it?" Cheng Ziang sighed once more.

"Got it..." Feng replied meekly, still looking down, evidently taking his words to heart.

"Let’s move out!" After persuading Feng, Cheng Ziang nodded and then addressed everyone.

The best way to investigate the reason behind Luo’er’s attack was to follow the leads from the assailant to track down the real culprit. Fortunately, the person who attacked Luo’er was not killed but was captured and thrown into jail.

Cheng Ziang led his team to the temporary prison, which was the original prison of Lipei City, reinforced with steel and concrete to be exceptionally secure. The attacker was locked up in the deepest dungeon, awaiting his fate.

Since Luo’er’s attack coincided with an assault on the jurisdiction, neither the Office nor the headquarters had time to deal with Luo’er’s situation, so the attacker was simply locked up for now.

Upon showing their credentials, the group entered the jail. Due to the lack of personnel, the prison guards were mostly mercenaries, not particularly reliable but not too bad either.

Arriving at the jail, Cheng Ziang saw the attacker, battered and dressed in tattered clothes, lying in the cage. Seeing the bruises, he turned to the mercenaries and asked, "What happened here, why is he in this state?"

"Some folks from the Mobile Troop came by, told us to step out for a smoke, and when we came back, he was like this," one of the mercenaries shrugged indifferently, mimicking the gesture of smoking to emphasize his point.

Cheng Ziang sighed; he knew what to expect from these people, so he had come prepared.

He pulled out a pack of cigarettes from his pocket and handed it to the mercenary, saying, "Why don’t you guys go out for a smoke? Come back when you’re done."

"Alright, Chief, enjoy yourself," the mercenary said excitedly, taking the cigarettes and passing the keys to Cheng Ziang before signaling to his companions to leave.

"Open the cage and tie him to the chair," Cheng Ziang handed the keys to Hu Daoke.

"Sure, follow me, guys," Hu Daoke called out to the other Marsyans and headed towards the cage.

"Feng, stay on alert," Cheng Ziang continued to command.

"Understood." Feng nodded slightly, then spread her legs apart and drew her long saber from the scabbard, readying herself in an attack stance.

Each time Cheng Ziang saw her unsheath her saber, he couldn’t help but feel anxious, knowing too well how ruthlessly she struck – usually one slash meant one less body part. Now, all he could hope was that the attacker wouldn’t do anything rash, or else he would start losing pieces.

Thankfully, the attacker seemed to have been beaten quite severely and was powerless to resist, quickly and tightly bound by the folks, strapped to a chair and left at their mercy.

"Is he awake or out cold?" Cheng Ziang walked into the cage and asked.

Instead of answering, Hu Daoke gave the attacker a couple of slaps, causing stars to sparkle before the man’s eyes and eliciting a pained groan.

"As long as he’s not dead," Cheng Ziang nodded and then considered for a moment before asking, "The Office won’t let us dismantle him, is there a way to pry information out of his mouth quickly?"

"You’ve come to the right man. How about water torture? Even the Central Intelligence Agency approves of it," Hu Daoke smirked.

"Then let’s try it. The sooner we get information out of him, the better," Cheng Ziang nodded and leaned back against the wall.

"Hey, old geezer, it’s not too late to start talking now," Hu Daoke patted his face and said.

The attacker glared at him but didn’t speak. He wasn’t actually old, just had a rather long beard. He was a Marsyan, likely in his thirties or forties. Judging by the effectiveness of his attack that day, he had good marksmanship; if it had been a bit more precise, it could have broken Luo’er’s cervical spine – and then it would have been beyond saving.

"Come on, lay down the cloth, pour some water, and enjoy the feeling of ’water breathing,’" Hu Daoke said with a grin.

"Isn’t that too cruel?" someone asked, frowning.

"What’s cruel? You haven’t seen true cruelty. Compared to chopping off fingers or toes, this is rather mild," Hu Daoke lectured.

"Ah, we can even chop off fingers and toes?" Five people asked in surprise, their eyes wide.

"You guys are just too young, haven’t seen the world, haven’t been to the Otherworld. This broken world is rotting. If you don’t rot, you can’t mix in here. You will understand in the future, some people are just born to be punished. If you don’t give them a lesson they’ll never forget, they’ll come back to bother you again," Hu Daoke said.

"Enough talk about useless things, let’s hurry up with the interrogation, we’re short on time," Cheng Ziang urged.

"Alright then, come on, put more effort into it," Hu Daoke nodded.

The group toiled for quite some time. Actually, if they wanted a bloodless interrogation, they had many methods at their disposal, but time waits for no one. They were worried that the longer they delayed, the worse the situation would get, so they opted for such a ruthless approach.

If it weren’t for Wang Xu’s reminder, this attacker might already have ended up crippled. Those five half-elves might not dare to do such things, but Cheng Ziang and his people were not ones to hold back. They were essentially the type who got more excited the more blood they saw.

After relentless torture for over two hours, the attacker couldn’t hold out anymore and shouted out loud, "Stop it, stop it, I’ll talk, I’ll tell you everything."

For him, pain was still bearable, but he couldn’t tolerate having his breathing obstructed by any means. That was something he couldn’t gradually get used to, after all, breathing is a natural necessity. The repeated blocking by Hu Daoke was unbearably painful, making him feel as if his brain was slowly becoming deprived of oxygen.

"Speak, who sent you?" Cheng Ziang asked satisfactorily, nodding.

"Flanta Averya..." Taking several deep breaths, the attacker spoke between gasps.

"Flanta Averya, why would he send you to attack Luo’er?" Cheng Ziang asked.

"He said, he said that Wood Elf mixed-blood destroyed his family, so, so he sent me..." the attacker stuttered.

"Besides him, is there another mastermind?" Cheng Ziang continued to ask.

"No..." the attacker said.

"No, are you sure?" Cheng Ziang asked, squinting his eyes.

"I, I don’t know, I don’t know, I only know he hired me..." the attacker pleaded.

"You knew entering Lipei City for an attack was a dead end, yet you dared to come; Flanta must have given you quite the incentive," Cheng Ziang said, squinting his eyes.

Faced with his questioning, the attacker lowered his head, silent.

"Shall we continue the interrogation?" Hu Daoke asked.

"Someone go and verify Flanta Averya’s identity, see if he’s lying," Cheng Ziang pondered.

"I’ll go!" A half-elf nodded, turned, and ran out of the cell.

"If it turns out he isn’t lying, shall we continue the interrogation?" Hu Daoke asked.

"Whatever you want," Cheng Ziang shrugged.

"Hehehe..." Hearing his words, Hu Daoke laughed smugly.
