Chapter 1073: Chapter 1066: Trapped in a Tiger’s Den
If such an explanation doesn’t make sense, then there can only be one explanation: Nina never gave up on Luo’er. Even after having a mixed-blood son like Luo’er, she became the Princess of Ilanadale once again.
But such a plot twist was even more incredible and eerie.
Although Axia was a Snow Elf, she still knew about Ilanadale. This self-proclaimed orthodox drooping-ear race had always been hostile towards outsiders and half-bloods. She could understand the Advance Team entering Divine Wood Town since there were trade relations with Ilanadale, but Luo’er and Nina being so intimately close was baffling.
Was it that Luo’er was bold, or did the Princess have no shame? It was hard to say. Before joining the headquarters, Axia felt she had little chance to clarify the relationship between Luo’er and Nina, or even that of Ilanadale as a whole.
With complex thoughts, Axia watched as Luo’er and Nina left the airboat together and headed towards Divine Wood Town.
Not everyone on the airboat was required to disembark. Sensitive characters like Axia Talis were not allowed to come down, especially the Night Elf Talis, who would certainly cause a stir among the Wood Elves.
Feng was also left on the airboat as Luo’er planned to find a Priest to see to her illness when the time was right. As for Feng’s injuries, Luo’er was desperate to find a cure by now.
The group walked into the town, only to be informed that the Queen was waiting for them at the square, so they hurried towards the square.
At that moment, Queen Lillith was leading a crowd in the square to receive them. Li Si quickly approached Lillith and respectfully said, "For Your Majesty to grace us with your presence is a truly great honor."
"Mr. Li Si is too modest. As Ilanadale’s largest partner, such an honor is only natural," Queen Lillith nodded lightly and politely responded.
Compared to Nina, Lillith truly embodied the principle of "the blue outshines the indigo." Even though Lillith was dignified and her movements embodied elegance, her aura still fell short by a few grades to Nina’s.
Of course, being only a bit inferior to Nina meant that, fundamentally, Lillith was still stunning. Yet, looking more mature after having lived for several hundred years, she resembled a ripe red apple: sweet, but lacking that sharp tartness that induces salivation.
After exchanging pleasantries with Li Si, Queen Lillith’s gaze turned to Nina. Under her dissatisfied look, Nina reluctantly let go of Luo’er’s hand and moved beside her.
"Captain Luo’er," Lillith looked at Luo’er and politely continued, "As a distinguished guest, it’s rare for you to visit Ilanadale, so of course we must treat you well. Someone, take Captain Luo’er and the others to rest."
Upon Lillith’s order, several dozen fully armed Elf soldiers suddenly appeared and immediately surrounded the members of the Advance Team.
"What is the meaning of this, Your Majesty?" Li Si looked around warily and asked.
"Mr. Li Si need not worry. We simply wish to invite Captain Luo’er to rest in Divine Wood Down; there are no other intentions," Queen Lillith stated indifferently.
"Your Majesty, this situation doesn’t look much like an invitation," Li Si said with a cold laugh.
"Mr. Li Si is overthinking it. This is an invitation on a personal basis, and I ask you not to worry," Queen Lillith still maintained her composure.
"An invitation on a personal basis?" muttered Li Si, sensing that something was amiss.
Because Lillith was simply making an excuse. What personal basis? Lillith had never acknowledged a relationship with Luo’er. Though she allowed Nina to interact with Luo’er, this did not mean she would accept and interact with Luo’er herself.
As the Queen of Ilanadale, Lillith naturally had to lead by example. How could she easily associate with a half-blood Elf like Luo’er? So the lie fell apart as soon as one thought about it.
But even after seeing through Queen Lillith’s lie, Li Si dared not openly question her. If mishandled, this could become an international dispute, a responsibility he could not bear.
Queen Lillith restricted Luo’er on a personal basis; this matter required further deliberation, and it was not prudent to demand her release in the name of the headquarters impulsively.
Because no matter what, whether Lillith or Luo’er acknowledged it or not, Queen Lilith was Luo’er’s maternal grandmother. A mere mention of "family matters" could leave the headquarters’ personnel speechless.
"Mother, what are you doing?" Nina became anxious once she saw the soldiers around and hurriedly looked at Queen Lilith to ask.
"Nina, how many times have I told you," Lillith frowned and scolded sharply, "in public, you must address me as Her Majesty the Queen!"
"It doesn’t matter either way, Your Majesty, but why are you doing this?" Nina asked incomprehensibly.
"What do you mean by this? Luo’er is your son, can’t I discipline him?" Lillith asked indifferently.
"But you have never acknowledged Luo’er..." Nina said anxiously.
"Does this sort of thing require acknowledgment?" Lillith shut Nina down with a single statement.
Indeed, just as Li Si had thought, whether Lillith and Luo’er acknowledged it or not, the relationship between her and Luo’er could not be erased. As long as Nina was her daughter, as long as Luo’er was Nina’s son, there would be inextricable links between her and Luo’er.
"Don’t worry," Queen Lilith said calmly, seeing Nina at a loss for words, "I am merely letting Luo’er have a good rest, nothing more. Haven’t you always wanted to be with Luo’er? Now you have the opportunity."
Luo’er silently observed Queen Lilith’s actions, not uttering a word, and even raised his hand to stop his teammates who were starting to get restless. Because he clearly felt that Queen Lilith’s actions were not without aim; it was evident that someone was targeting them.
Luo’er observed Lillith, casting glances at the others. Then, he saw at the top of the pyramid not far behind Lillith, stood an Elf clad in flowing white robes. Upon closer inspection, it was the Priest who had once saved Luo’er’s life. At the moment, he stood at the top of the pyramid, smiling as he watched the Advance Team.
Seeing the Priest, Luo’er lowered his head, and after a long contemplation, he finally started to piece things together.
It wasn’t strange at all for him to encounter trouble in Divine Wood Down; in fact, if he had been surprised, it would mean he had overlooked something important.
Divine Wood Down was a stronghold of the Wood Elves, and the Wood Elves were staunch supporters of Tana. Now that Luo’er and the others were preparing to go to Xia Yue Island to restrict Tana’s abuse of power, it was no surprise they encountered trouble in Divine Wood Down.
Clearly, this matter was related to the Priest, and the Priest targeting Luo’er and his companions plainly revealed the mastermind behind it all.
"Luo’er, what should we do? It looks like your grandmother has no intention of letting you go," Cheng Ziang whispered to Luo’er.
"Let’s use their strategy against them. There’s no need to make a big scene right now," Luo’er said after pondering for a moment.
"Alright," Cheng Ziang nodded and then continued, "The key is you, your grandmother is obviously targeting you."
"I know, I have a way to deal with her," Luo’er reassured.
After reassuring his teammates, Luo’er stepped forward, bowed slightly, and said respectfully and aloud, "Luo’er thanks Grandmother for your gracious hospitality."
As he finished speaking, he lifted his head and saw that Lillith’s expression was very unpleasant. Being the Queen of Ilanadale, having Luo’er, a half-breed, call her "Grandmother" in public was a blow to her dignity.
By leveraging his supposed familial relationship, Luo’er managed to vex Queen Lilith, gaining a small verbal advantage. He looked at his mother, who at the time was regarding him with worried eyes.
Luo’er was acutely aware that the best way to extricate himself right now was through Nina. He understood his mother’s character; in the face of such a situation, Nina would never sit back and let it go. She had never been willing to let him suffer since he was young.
