Chapter 1062: Chapter 1055: Catastrophe of the East Continent

Standing before the massive skeleton of the Scouring Sky Beast, Luo’er finally understood the meaning of enormity and insignificance. He felt like a speck of dust in front of the skeleton, which he would rather believe to be a gigantic interstellar warship than a living creature.

It was not difficult to imagine the shock of the Western Continent people when they first saw such a colossal being navigating through the clouds.

Unfortunately, Luo’er could not witness the spectacular scene of that era, only the pile of bones silently lying in the dense mountain jungle.

He was very excited and reached out his hand, attempting to touch the skeleton of the Scouring Sky Beast. Many vines had climbed over the skeleton, and the parts close to the ground were covered with green moss.

Luo’er extended his hand and gently brushed aside the vines, then scraped away the moss to reveal the skeleton’s yellowed hue; touching it, he felt the warmth similar to ivory.

"Did my ancestors really arrive at the Western Continent on such tremendous beings?" Baiyue gazed up at the skeleton and could not help but murmur to herself.

She almost reached out to touch it but seemed to hesitate about something, each time withdrawing her hand subconsciously just as she was about to make contact. Seeing this, Luo’er took her small hand and pressed it firmly against the skeleton.

"Ah, this..." Baiyue let out a cry of surprise and then turned to look at Luo’er, inevitably pursing her lips.

"What did they actually go through back then?" Luo’er smiled and then continued looking up at the skeleton before suddenly muttering to himself.

"I also want to know what exactly happened back in the East Continent..." said Baiyue, nodding in agreement.

"It seems, if we want to clarify what happened back then, we can only ask these survivors from the East Continent. Unfortunately, several hundred years have passed since then, and the firsthand witnesses of that time have long since passed away. I wonder how much information has been handed down to the later generations," Luo’er said with a helpless shake of his head.

"In any case, let’s start by asking around. I always feel we are getting closer and closer to the truth," said Baiyue.

After taking a look at the remains of the Scouring Sky Beast, Luo’er and his group began to painstakingly visit the entire village, inquiring about the details of certain events from the past and comparing them with the information they already had.

After a day of effort, they gathered testimonies from over ten villagers, compiling all the information together, and a harrowing escape story gradually became clear.

It was a tale from several hundred years ago, where the self-proclaimed orthodox Human Race, on the distant East Continent, viewed them as anomalies and kept waging wars to eradicate them.

The Human Race also possessed Scouring Sky Beasts as aerial transport, using them to project their military force from the far reaches of the Far East to the western part of the East Continent, exterminating these so-called non-humans.

This genocidal war lasted for several years, and innumerable members of the Non-human Race perished. Although they formed a coalition to fight against the Human Race’s army, they were still no match for the Human Race’s formidable military power.

In the end, the Non-human Race’s last stronghold was taken by the Human Race; with nowhere left to flee, these Non-human Race people hid inside the belly of the sole remaining Scouring Sky Beast. Known as Lord Leiyun, the beast broke through the encirclement of the Human Race with everyone inside and fled westward.

Hot on their heels were the Human Race pursuers; the two sides tangled in the clouds, even up to the Nine Heavens. Eventually, Lord Leiyun managed to shake off the pursuers, carrying everyone all the way west and finally reaching the unfamiliar West Continent.

By this time, Lord Leiyun was on its last breath, its breakout and entanglement leaving it severely injured and on the brink of death with no chance of recovery. In its dying moments, Lord Leiyun deposited the people it protected onto land, then it set out alone in search of a secluded place to pass away in peace.

However, the Wolfman Clan of the time refused to leave it, insisting on accompanying until the end of its life. With no choice, Lord Leiyun brought the Wolfman Clan to this mountain-surrounded valley, where it decided to end its life. The Wolfman Clan, too, took root here in this land.

In the evening, Luo’er and the others stayed in the village to rest. They gathered around a table to discuss the intelligence they had collected that day.

While the civilization of the Wolfman Clan had not declined much, after all, hiding in the deep mountains and old forests, they suffered from a significant shortage of many supplies, such as lamps and candles for lighting. Therefore, after nightfall, aside from those on night patrol, there was only one thing everyone in the Wolfman Clan could do, and that was to sleep.

Luo’er lit a Magic Crystal Lamp on the table, and under the dim glow of the magic crystal, he discussed the day’s findings with Baiyue and Axia.

"We collected so much information today, and even after sorting through it, there are still some parts that are hard to understand," Luo’er said with a slight frown, "For instance, if Lord Leiyun knew to escape westward, why wouldn’t the human pursuers follow and hunt them down? I don’t believe they lack the ability. Don’t forget, the Human Race also has the Overturning Beasts as their aerial fleet."

"You weren’t careful enough in reviewing the data, so you overlooked some details, which led to a gap in understanding the bigger picture," Baiyue shook her head and said.

"What do you mean?" Luo’er asked, looking at her.

"These materials all mention an important detail," Baiyue sighed and said, "That is, when the Human Race’s army came from afar to attack, by the time they reached the western part of the East Continent, they were already at the end of their tether. How could they possibly have the capacity to continue the pursuit?"

"Eh..." Luo’er paused, still skeptical of the explanation.

"The East Continent may be called so, but judging from the description, the entire continent’s span across longitudes should not be small. I wouldn’t say it’s as exaggerated as from Ireland to Khitan, but at least it has to be as far as five or six time zones. The Human Race, living in the east and assaulting with Kunzhous, would be pretty strained by the time they reached the west. If they pursued further westward, I guess they would be unable to endure it."

"Hmm..." Luo’er nodded, reluctantly in agreement.

Don’t think that five or six time zones aren’t much; that distance is enough to go from Zhangjiakou to Constantinople, which is almost running from Asia to Europe.

"So, you’re saying that when the human army invaded, they were already at the end of their rope by the time they reached the Wolfman Clan’s territory, yet they still displayed powerful combat capabilities, forcing the Sub-beastmen into exile from their homes. These people must be incredibly formidable..." Luo’er said, looking down at the organized materials and couldn’t help but marvel.

"How formidable, isn’t there a reference?" Baiyue pointedly said.

"Are you talking about... Feng?" Luo’er asked hesitantly.

"And that mysterious man," Baiyue continued, "If, and I’m just supposing, if only one-tenth of the East Continent Clan army had their kind of strength, I think they could still hugely dominate the Otherworld wars against the United Nations forces."

"Right," Luo’er nodded, in agreement, "After all, the advantage of magic’s home field is just too overwhelming. Earth’s so-advanced civilization, when faced with this generally feudal Otherworld, was still beaten into a sorry state. That’s why when dealing with people from the Otherworld, warfare is always the very last resort."

"Let’s not talk about that for now. I think after we compile this information, we’ll basically have a clear picture of the East Continent’s situation. If headquarters is interested in expanding eastward one day, this information will definitely be valuable," Baiyue said.

"Looking at the current situation in the West Continent, I don’t think even the High-peak people will be able to reach the East Continent, given that the Sub-beastmen took a full eighty-one days to travel from the East to the West Continent," Luo’er said.

"That’s hard to say," Baiyue countered Luo’er’s point of view, "Don’t forget that the High-peak people are already building new types of airships. I think that one day in the future, when the new airships are in service, the High-peak people will have the capacity for long voyages. By then, perhaps we can follow them eastward to explore, initiating not the age of great seafaring, but rather, the great spacefaring era."

"Let’s think about that later," Luo’er said with a chuckle and a shake of his head, "Right now, headquarters can’t even handle the West Continent, let alone covet the East Continent. Besides, once the High-peak people build their warships, rather than using them for defense at home, it seems unlikely they would go off to the East Continent to strut around."

"That’s not a given. If it’s just for a surveying purpose, I think the High-peak people might be interested in expanding eastward. After all, their position on the West Continent is a bit awkward. If they can open a route to the East Continent, then Ronisca will undoubtedly become the starting point for exchanges between the East and West Continents, a status not to be underestimated," Baiyue said.
