Chapter 1050 - 1043: The Man with the Beast’s Head
Chapter 1050: Chapter 1043: The Man with the Beast’s Head
The shadows between the trees were indistinct as if wild beasts lurked around. Everyone’s hearts were in their throats, feeling movements everywhere. The stifling air also added to their irritation. If not for good discipline, the Advance Team might have already opened fire by now.
For now, all Luo’er could do was hold his position and wait for Fulajie’er’s report. One could imagine how powerless they would have been without Fulajie’er’s ghostly reconnaissance in such a situation.
"Luo’er, get down!" Suddenly, Fulajie’er’s cry echoed in Luo’er’s mind.
On hearing this, Luo’er instinctively crouched, immediately feeling something whoosh over his head then heavily embed itself into the trunk of a tree.
At this moment, Luo’er, still unnerved, had no chance to closely observe what it was when he heard more rustling sounds from behind.
He spun around, flipped his gun toward the back, only to see a figure rushing towards him. His newly adjusted gun was swiftly slapped aside, and a large hand reached straight for Luo’er’s head.
"Aow!!"
Suddenly, an invisible barrier appeared in front of Luo’er and the attacker slammed into it hard, wailing in agony and pausing in his motion.
Luo’er stepped back and could then see the attacker’s true face—it was a brawny man, bare-chested, wearing a beast skin apron.
What captured attention most was his head—it was a beast’s head, covered in thick fur and sporting sharp fangs.
The attacker, caught off guard, slammed into the shield opened by Fulajie’er, screaming in pain. Luo’er stared wide-eyed at him, took a deep breath, and suddenly felt braver.
Once the shield disappeared, he took a step forward and struck the attacker’s stomach hard with the butt of his gun. Although his bullpup rifle was not ideal for close combat, it wasn’t completely useless for it; even without bullets, it could be used like a club.
The attacker doubled over with a cry of pain from the blow to his stomach. Luo’er moved to the side of the attacker and lifted his rifle high, smashing it down on the back of the attacker’s neck. With a thunk, the attacker was downed in an instant, without even a chance to react or resist.
During this, the safety on Luo’er’s rifle remained in ready-to-fire position, yet despite the struggle, the rifle hadn’t gone off.
This was the design feature of the Model 47 bullpup, also known as the parallel advancement safety mechanism. This safety mechanism ensured that the rifle could only fire when the trigger was pulled directly by the shooter. Merely dropping or bumping into things wouldn’t fire the rifle, as it wouldn’t meet the trigger’s parallel advancement requirement.
In Otherworld, where Earth’s traditional electronic sciences couldn’t function, this safety was primarily mechanical, relying on comparatively precise design to ensure high levels of safety for the rifle.
Of course, every advantage has its cost; while the safety of the Model 47 bullpup was improved, its reliability decreased. Due to its precision, it became especially unreliable, and during missions, the Advance Team encountered several incidents where the trigger wouldn’t pull or wouldn’t fire bullets.
Even though the Advance Team currently used an improved version of the Model 47 bullpup, such issues still persisted, albeit with a reduced failure rate by about ten percent.
In weapon design, designers and the military always have various fixations. The military considers the universality of a weapon, while designers yearn to incorporate all the latest technologies into it.
Thus, the original version of the Model 47 bullpup was created, a rifle that could fire both cased and caseless ammunition, piling all sorts of bizarre designs onto this weapon, causing constant headaches for the Advance Team as actual users.
It was said that the headquarters had already requested the firearms designers to come up with a new improvement plan. If they could only increase reliability by ten percent, they would ask the designers to completely abandon the so-called parallel advancement trigger safety mechanism and switch to a traditional trigger system.
However, to be fair, Luo’er and the Advance Team were quite fond of this unique trigger safety system. It was indeed convenient, and the failure rate wasn’t too high; generally, a malfunction might occur once in every two thousand shots, but it wasn’t difficult to repair, so it was not a severe issue.
The most important thing was that, although the Advance Team was an armed squad, they weren’t usually engaged in combat most of the time, so they put great importance on the safety measures of their rifles. After all, everyday bumps and brushes were inevitable, and the rifles could accidentally discharge. With this system in place, the accidental discharge rate could even be reduced to less than one percent.
Back to the combat scene, Luo’er, who had undergone combat training, targeted the enemy’s vulnerable spots with almost every strike, taking down a burly man twice his size with just two moves.
In fact, he was intentionally holding back; otherwise, he could have simply opened fire and killed the attacker right then. Considering that this man was likely a Beastial man, Luo’er maintained restraint and chose not to fire.
Seeing the attacker downed, Luo’er immediately stepped on his hand and another foot on his neck, trying to pin him to the ground, while loudly calling out to Cheng Ziang, "Ziang!"
"Copy that!" Seeing Luo’er restraining the attacker, Cheng Ziang immediately dropped his weapon and rushed over.
However, the attacker clearly had no intention of being tied up so easily. He grabbed Luo’s ankle, which was pressing on his nape, with his free hand and yanked hard. Luo’er immediately lost his balance and staggered to the ground.
No sooner had Luo landed on his buttocks than the freed attacker sprang up from the ground and lunged at him again.
Luo reacted instantly, bending his legs in a rabbit-kicks-eagle maneuver and kicked the attacker, sending him toppling backward. Cheng Ziang rushed behind him in three steps, wrapped his arm around the man’s neck, and twisted it forcefully.
The attacker, with his neck gripped, couldn’t resist and was twisted by Cheng Ziang to lie face down on the ground. Immediately after, Cheng Ziang clamped down on his wrists and twisted his arms forcefully, pinning him behind his back.
Even with immense strength, the attacker couldn’t bear the pain of his limbs being twisted and, once restrained by Cheng Ziang’s grappling, he let out a painful scream.
His screams seemed to attract the attention of his companions nearby; rustling sounds from the woods indicated that quite a number of people were approaching, surrounding the members of the Advance Team.
"Be alert, be alert, do not open fire without my order!" Luo’er ordered loudly while assisting Cheng Ziang in tying up the attacker.
They used Nylon zip ties to bind the attacker’s thumbs behind his back easily. Although the attacker was strong, he couldn’t break free because any attempt to exert force would cause excruciating pain in his thumbs, making him scream in agony.
"Luo’er!" Baiyue called out coldly, holding a gun.
Luo’er looked up and realized that many beast-headed humans had appeared, encircling their group—and there were about thirty of them.
"My goodness, I never knew there were such beings in this world," Axia said in shock.
Surrounded on all sides, Luo’er didn’t seem to be afraid but calmly watched these Beastial men, focusing his gaze on Taran.
Facing so many of the Beastial men, whose stature was virtually identical to that of beastmen, Taran’s eyes widened, trembled all over. Although he was holding a rifle, it was clear that its muzzle was shaking uncontrollably.
"Taran," Luo’er, noticing this, went over, pressed down his rifle muzzle, and reassured him while looking into his eyes, "It’s okay, we’re here, nothing will happen."
"Oh, uh, yeah!" Taran, looking terrified, swallowed hard and then nodded somewhat absentmindedly.
After reassuring Taran, Luo’er continued to look around at the encircling Beastial men. They didn’t seem to be attacking immediately but rather coldly watched them, seemingly awaiting someone’s order.
