Chapter 85: Chapter 85 Avoiding Embarrassment
The culprit, Ji Yu, showed not the slightest hint of guilt.
"Mom, Dad, he runs a company."
That explanation was technically correct, but Gu Qixiao couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off.
The Ji family parents also harbored suspicions that Gu Qixiao might be plotting a marriage scam. Otherwise, why would he be so indifferent about the child? Their attitude toward him had grown noticeably colder.
Seeing Gu Qixiao’s puzzled expression, Ji Yu felt like she was on the verge of breaking down.
It wasn’t her fault! She had no choice in this matter. By explaining it this way, she was merely trying to save Gu Qixiao from embarrassment.
"Mom, Dad, since the discussion is more or less over, shouldn’t we let President Gu get back to his work now?"
"At least stay for a meal. After all, he did help you a lot this time." Although they were suspicious of Gu Qixiao, there was no denying the authenticity of his involvement in this particular incident.
As a result, their attitude toward Gu Qixiao became marginally warmer.
When Ji Yuanzhou returned that evening, this was the scene he walked in on.
For a moment, he wondered if his eyes were playing tricks on him.
"Yu, this is..."
"Mom and Dad are just thanking President Gu. He’ll be leaving soon," Ji Yu replied through gritted teeth.
She couldn’t quite find the words to describe the absurdity of the situation in front of her.
It all felt utterly ridiculous.
Ji Yu had been feeling resistant to this entire scene long before now, and she was eager for it to end quickly.
The meal felt like torture for Ji Yu, while Ji Yuanzhou observed Gu Qixiao with curiosity, wondering what his true intentions were.
His gaze carried an investigative edge, as if trying to discern why Gu Qixiao had stayed with their family. Could he have some ulterior motive?
"It seems there might’ve been some misunderstandings in the past. We didn’t have the most pleasant first meeting. I’ll formally introduce myself today: I’m Gu Qixiao, Ji Yu’s suitor."
When Gu Qixiao said his name, Ji Yuanzhou froze momentarily.
But he quickly responded, "What did you say your name is?"
"Gu Qixiao." Gu Qixiao was confident; it was rare for anyone to share his name.
Ji Yu, watching this play out, felt numb to it all. "Whoever needs to leave should just go. There’s no need to block the doorway with introductions."
Her attitude also served as confirmation of Gu Qixiao’s identity.
Ji Yuanzhou’s gaze turned playful. "It seems this suitor of yours is quite interesting."
The situation with the marriage had been one thing, but pursuing her after the divorce? Now, that was getting intriguing.
Gu Qixiao didn’t quite grasp Ji Yuanzhou’s tone, but he understood that Ji Yu didn’t want to witness this scene. "I’ll leave now. But don’t forget to take proper rest—you’ve been pushing yourself too hard these days."
With that, he turned and left.
However, he remained skeptical of Ji Yuanzhou’s earlier remarks.
After stating his name, Ji Yuanzhou’s expression had become particularly amused.
"Does this Ji Yuanzhou have any partnership with us?"
"The Ji family’s collaboration has been ongoing for quite some time. Does President Gu have any specific concerns?" Assistant Li didn’t understand why Gu Qixiao was asking.
But seeing as Gu Qixiao had met the parents today, he assumed the rest would proceed smoothly.
"It’s nothing. Let’s head back."
Since there were no clear leads for now, he decided to put the matter on hold for the time being.
Over on Ji Yuanzhou’s side, however, he couldn’t help but feel curious. "Why are you still crossing paths with him?"
"Honestly, I don’t want any more involvement with Gu Qixiao. But he has helped me a lot recently." Ji Yu rubbed her temples, unsure how to explain the situation.
"Since he helped you, he can at least be considered a friend. There’s no need to overthink it. If you feel wronged, you can always tell us."
Ji Yuanzhou was certain Ji Yu had endured a lot during this time.
As for Gu Qixiao, he didn’t take him seriously.
"Go rest," he said while gently ruffling Ji Yu’s hair, hoping she wouldn’t dwell too much on the matter.
When Ji Yu returned to her room, she felt a mix of exasperation and amusement.
Thinking about today’s events, she couldn’t help but smile.
"Maybe you’re not that insufferable after all."
At the very least, Gu Qixiao wasn’t entirely loathsome in her eyes.
However, what had happened before still left its traces—it wasn’t something that could be entirely erased.
"Forget it. There’s no point in dwelling on it."
She figured it would be better just to rest.
While Ji Yu slept soundly, things weren’t going so well for Song Xuan.
She hadn’t expected Ji Yu to deal with the situation so swiftly.
"What’s going on? Didn’t you say this matter would be resolved easily?"
She kept questioning the hired trolls about the situation, but this time it was like her messages had vanished into thin air.
Worried something else might happen, she decided to get rid of her SIM card altogether.
"Still up so late?" Gu Qixiao noticed her sitting on the couch, looking unsettled, and asked with a rare note of concern.
Song Xuan’s facial scars had almost healed, but she still carried hints of insecurity.
"Xiao, why are you back so early tonight?"
She had just finished erasing all her records. Even if someone investigated her, there wouldn’t be a shred of evidence left.
"There’s been a lot happening lately. I came back to check in."
He knew Song Xuan had been keeping tabs on Ji Yu’s situation. "Are you following developments online?"
"Yes. Doctor Ji is so skilled; how could something like this happen to her?" She forced a smile, her eyes avoiding his gaze.
"Is that so?" Gu Qixiao neither confirmed nor denied it. Since he already knew the truth, there was no need to let it bother him further.
"She’s assigned people to investigate. I believe they’ll soon uncover the culprit behind all this. After all, she knows plenty of influential figures."
That earlier remark about having new allies? Everyone had taken notice.
Given the current state of affairs, finding the person behind the scheme wouldn’t take long.
For a brief moment, panic flashed across Song Xuan’s face. She had guessed that her contacts had been discovered when none of them responded to her.
But as long as she hadn’t been singled out, there was no way she would confess.
"Well, I wish Miss Ji success in resolving these issues quickly. It’s been affecting the hospital, after all. I just can’t understand how people could be so malicious."
She feigned solidarity with Ji Yu, but inwardly she was already considering finding a scapegoat. Otherwise, she’d inevitably be roped in.
"Xiao, do you actually like Doctor Ji? It seems like you were protecting her again today."
That scene had filled Song Xuan with jealousy so fierce it nearly drove her mad. The things she’d never experienced in her life, Ji Yu seemed to obtain effortlessly.
But this time, she was fishing for Gu Qixiao’s true feelings.
"Maybe. It’s not something you need to concern yourself with."
