Chapter 57: Chapter 57 Barely a Good Person
Ji Yu wasn’t the kind of unreasonable person.
Seeing Gu Qixiao make such an effort, her impression of him changed slightly. At the very least, he didn’t seem as detestable anymore.
"Sister Yu, look, Sweetie Lin has legs now!"
Previously, this child had lost his parents and one of his legs in a car accident. Now, this moment was a different kind of completeness.
Sweetie Lin’s eyes sparkled. "Sister Yu, I’m so happy."
From now on, he could walk like a normal child.
He eagerly tried to stand up but, unused to the new prosthetic, nearly fell to the ground.
Gu Qixiao didn’t mind Sweetie Lin’s restlessness. After steadying him, he patiently instructed, "Even with legs, you can’t be careless when walking. Otherwise, you’ll make people worry, understand?"
Sweetie Lin nodded obediently. "Thank you, Uncle."
That "Uncle" nearly made Gu Qixiao lose his composure.
"Do I not look more like an older brother?" They called Ji Yu "Sister," but called him "Uncle." Did he really look so old?
Ji Yu couldn’t help but find it amusing. It was the first time she saw Gu Qixiao being this petty.
"Sweetie Lin can call him whatever he likes. Uncle or Brother, it’s all the same."
Sweetie Lin scratched his head shyly. "Alright then."
Sometimes, he really didn’t understand why adults were so fixated on forms of address.
Gu Qixiao sighed helplessly. Seeing the smile on Ji Yu’s face, he couldn’t stop himself from smiling as well.
The children’s joy was infectious and filled him with a sense of accomplishment he had never felt before.
After spending some time with the children, Gu Qixiao noticed how well-behaved they all were. "Did you used to come here often?"
Ji Yu hadn’t visited frequently before, as work kept her busy. This time, it was Granny Li’s illness that made her stay for so long.
"What does that have to do with you, President Gu?"
Her dislike for Gu Qixiao had faded a bit. At the very least, he seemed to barely qualify as a decent person.
"Doctor Ji, I have my own reasons for this. I believe you know what I’m getting at."
His gaze toward Ji Yu was filled with hope.
But Ji Yu felt her temper flare. So all his maneuvering was ultimately about Song Xuan?
"President Gu, you’re really invested in this, aren’t you?"
Gu Qixiao frowned slightly but refrained from expressing any irritation. "I’m simply taking responsibility for my life."
If Song Xuan’s issue wasn’t resolved, he wouldn’t have peace for the rest of his days.
But Ji Yu misunderstood, thinking he just wanted his little paramour to look better. "I didn’t realize President Gu had such high aspirations."
Without realizing it, the two of them had walked to the music room. Though the equipment here was basic, all the essentials were present.
"Did you set this up?"
"Yeah." Ji Yu hoped that even in such an environment, the children wouldn’t give up on the things they loved in their hearts.
"You always have to give children something they like. They can’t stay here forever."
She firmly believed that these children would eventually find their own paths.
For a moment, Gu Qixiao felt as if Ji Yu was glowing.
Meanwhile, Ji Yu didn’t pay his thoughts any mind, instead teaching a child to play the piano. Before long, the tune was finished.
Yet, Gu Qixiao couldn’t help but want to hear more.
"You seem to be very good at this."
"Not really. I was interested in it for a while before." Ji Yu wasn’t particularly skilled, though.
"Sister Yu is amazing at everything," Little Xiu said, tilting her head to praise her.
Ji Yu pinched Little Xiu’s cheek. "You’re such a sweet talker. Alright, the song’s done. Go have lunch now."
She could tell Gu Qixiao had more to say.
Little Xiu obediently ran off with her friends to eat.
Gu Qixiao lingered by Ji Yu’s side, wanting to get a sense of her day-to-day self.
"Doctor Ji doesn’t seem to have that big of a temper usually."
That comment nearly made Ji Yu roll her eyes. In the end, she held back. "What does that have to do with you? Besides, wouldn’t my bad temper be because of how excessive you all were?"
If they had even a shred of decency, things wouldn’t have escalated so much.
Ji Yu didn’t say more, but her furrowed brow betrayed how strongly she felt about the matter.
"We were in the wrong before, but Xuanxuan already knows she was wrong. She definitely won’t go to another hospital for surgery again. I hope you can give her another chance."
If not, he feared he’d be driven mad.
Ji Yu raised an eyebrow, utterly unconvinced. "A person’s character is shaped as they grow up. It’s impossible for one incident to change that."
As the saying goes, a leopard doesn’t change its spots. Isn’t that the truth?
Her judgments of people were generally accurate. Song Xuan was sure to stir up trouble again in the future.
"I never said I wouldn’t help. Convince her first, and we’ll see. I prefer collaborative efforts."
Ji Yu never intended to make things difficult for Song Xuan.
"Really?" Gu Qixiao seemed to grasp a glimmer of hope.
Unfortunately, Ji Yu was already done entertaining him.
Carrying her lunch, she headed straight to Granny Li’s room.
This was the first time Gu Qixiao had met Granny Li.
Her figure looked increasingly frail, and her frequent coughing sounded worse. "Yu, why are you bringing me lunch again? I can manage on my own."
She still tried to remain self-sufficient, though she could barely hold her chopsticks, let alone pick up her meal.
Ji Yu held back tears as she set the meal on the table. "It’s a rare chance for me to be home. You should make the most of bossing me around."
She worried that Granny Li might overthink things and didn’t dare mention her worsening condition.
But it soon became clear to Ji Yu that Granny Li had already stopped reacting emotionally to such concerns.
Or rather, her mental state had begun to deteriorate.
"Granny, eat a little more. Today’s meal is really hearty."
Yet despite the sumptuous meal, Granny Li could only manage a few spoonfuls of porridge before setting it aside.
"You don’t need to keep bringing food for this old woman. It’s too wasteful."
Her mind was still preoccupied with frugality.
This only made Shen Qingqing’s heart ache even more.
Looking at the frail old woman before her, she felt an unbearable sadness.
"By the way, Yu, who is this young man? He’s been standing here for a while. I don’t seem to recognize him?"
She mistook Gu Qixiao for one of the children she had cared for before.
But after thinking for a moment, she still couldn’t recall who he was.
"Granny, you don’t need to mind him."
Ji Yu had no interest in addressing anything related to Gu Qixiao.
She helped Granny Li to sit on the bed and patiently wiped her mouth.
