Chapter 49: Chapter 49: The Child’s Stay or Departure
Gu Qixiao really didn’t have the energy to explain all of this.
"Xuanxuan, go home first. This is a hospital."
He didn’t want Song Xuan causing a scene here.
Song Xuan’s eyes were brimming with tears, making her look incredibly pitiful.
Unfortunately, Gu Qixiao’s expression was cold and indifferent, unmoved by the situation before him.
Left with no choice, Song Xuan could only follow Assistant Li out.
"Assistant Li, does Xiao think my face brings him shame?"
Assistant Li felt his scalp tingle under her gaze. "How could that be? Miss Song, you’re overthinking. Chairman Gu isn’t in good health, and President Gu’s mood isn’t good about that matter. It doesn’t have anything to do with you."
"Really?" Then why wasn’t she allowed to stay just now?
Song Xuan touched her cheek, appearing lost in thought.
If her face was the reason, then maybe if she turned herself into Ji Yu, she could win Gu Qixiao’s heart?
At home, Ji Yu was resting when she suddenly sneezed, feeling even more conflicted about the decision concerning the child.
Coincidentally, the Ji parents called Ji Yu to come home for dinner. Ji Yu hesitated. "Mom, Dad, I won’t be coming home tonight. There’s still some unresolved matters here at Xin Xin."
Ji Yuanzhou sighed inwardly, thinking his little sister didn’t even bother preparing a proper excuse.
The three of them had been waiting downstairs at Xin Xin’s building—they knew perfectly well that Ji Yu wasn’t there.
Even so, they didn’t plan to expose her lie.
After hanging up the phone, they instructed Ji Yuanzhou to visit Ji Yu more often.
"Your sister’s been in bad spirits lately. As her brother, you should at least check on her occasionally."
Ji Yuanzhou felt resigned. "Mom, Dad, you both know this girl is always set on her ways. What can I actually do to help?"
Ji Yu had always taken care of herself and grown increasingly hard for him to understand.
"Stop arguing. It’s probably you who bullied her so much she doesn’t want to come home anymore!"
This somehow became his fault?
Ji Yuanzhou sighed but had no choice other than to grab the dinner their parents packed and take it to Ji Yu.
At least this way, he wouldn’t have to hear them nagging anymore.
When Ji Yu saw him, she seemed surprised, though she quickly regained her composure.
"Are you sick? Your face looks terrible." He handed her the lunchbox, then noticed her pale complexion and grew a little concerned.
Unprepared earlier, naturally she looked unwell.
"It’s nothing. I’ve just been really tired. How did you even know I was home?" She hadn’t just claimed to be at Xin Xin?
"Mom and Dad were waiting for you at Xin Xin earlier. Since you weren’t there, you were obviously at this apartment. Now tell me—what’s bothering you?"
He naturally sat beside Ji Yu, looking every bit the caring elder brother ready to hear out his younger sister’s troubles.
But Ji Yu knew some things couldn’t be said aloud.
At least not until she made her decision; the matter of the child had to remain concealed.
"Brother, I’m really fine. If I look pale, it’s just because I’ve been busier than usual lately. You know how I’ve been trending online for days now."
Ji Yuanzhou frowned slightly, recalling the matter between her and Lu Xingchen. "You’re upset because of Lu Xingchen, aren’t you?"
The possibility left a bitter taste in his heart.
Yet, if Ji Yu’s unhappiness were indeed related to Lu Xingchen, it would be the lesser worry. The weight of the child in her womb was the real burden she couldn’t figure out how to handle.
"It has nothing to do with Lu Xingchen. We’re just friends."
She felt helpless, knowing the issue with the child would trouble her for quite some time.
"Then what’s so important you can’t tell the family?"
Ji Yuanzhou sounded a bit stubborn.
He seemed to still see Ji Yu as the young girl who couldn’t manage anything on her own.
Ji Yu sighed lightly. "Brother, just give me some time, okay? When the time comes, I promise to tell you everything."
She couldn’t hide the child’s existence from the family forever.
But it had to wait until she was certain this child could stay.
Her gaze was earnest, coupled with her pale, delicate features. Ji Yuanzhou eventually relented.
"You little rascal. You always get tangled up in mysterious things. No matter what, the family is here for you. Nobody’s going to bully you while we’re around."
He instinctively wanted to ruffle Ji Yu’s hair, but she dodged him reflexively.
For a moment, the two of them felt awkward.
Some things, ultimately, couldn’t go back to how they once were.
Ji Yu smiled faintly at him. "Brother, everything’s in the past now. Let’s go home together."
She had calmed down. Since the child’s sudden arrival, she’d decided to let things take their course and not fight against fate.
"I’m sure Mom and Dad miss me too." She spoke casually, but Ji Yuanzhou couldn’t shake the feeling she was hiding something from them.
Meanwhile, at the hospital, Gu Qixiao tried multiple times to reach Ji Yu on the phone, but each attempt only led to her line being turned off.
Assistant Li was able to connect, though his calls were always hung up.
Assistant Li gave Gu Qixiao an uncomfortable look, suspecting there was a high chance Gu Qixiao had been blocked.
"President Gu, do you need something from Miss Ji? How about leaving her a message? Maybe she’ll reach out once she sees it?"
He carefully suggested a compromise.
Yet Gu Qixiao’s expression stayed grim.
"I’d like to see when she’ll contact me on her own initiative."
Despite everything on his plate recently, Ji Yu’s pregnancy kept lingering in his mind, no matter how he tried to dismiss it.
"Has the plastic surgeon I asked you to reach out to responded yet?"
The thought of Song Xuan’s face annoyed him further. It seemed like he was experiencing a streak of bad luck lately, constantly encountering bizarre situations.
"I’ve made contact with an expert in the field. Apparently, they’ve trained several highly skilled surgeons."
"Schedule a meeting as soon as possible." He needed to resolve the matter with Song Xuan quickly.
"Understood."
Gu Qixiao made an effort to calm his emotions, then turned back into the hospital room.
Mr. Gu looked at his son with a faint smirk. "What’s this? Got yourself tangled up in a love debt recently?"
From the moment he’d seen Song Xuan, he knew there was nothing simple about their relationship.
The current situation only confirmed that suspicion.
"Dad, things between me and Song Xuan aren’t like what you think."
The weight of Song Xuan’s feelings felt suffocating to him.
Ever since that incident, he couldn’t help but remember. Now he wished Song Xuan could find her own happiness.
Why cling to him for redemption?
"You really don’t get it, do you? The girl’s feelings are plainly obvious—how can you not sense it?"
He knew his son’s personality well. If Gu Qixiao felt this way, it likely meant he didn’t reciprocate those feelings.
"Dad, whatever happens, I owe their family a life."
The events of that day would stay with him forever.
