Chapter 142: Chapter 142: Better a Short Pain than a Long One

"Isn’t there a saying? It’s better to rip the band-aid off quickly than let the pain linger. I think it’s fine the way I am now."

Soon, she would have a lovely child, without the emotional torment of a relationship. Wouldn’t this be the best outcome?

Feng Qinqin suddenly felt a bit deflated. "I wish I had your resolve. Maybe then I wouldn’t be stuck in this torturous cycle of unrequited love."

Her tone grew subdued as she spoke about it.

Ji Yu looked at her, curious about who she had been pining over all this time, and why it had left her with such complicated feelings.

"You should think about the fact that he doesn’t like you. Eventually, you’ll meet someone who does. If he’s not the right person for you and doesn’t treat you well, it’s better to cut ties altogether."

She disliked dragging things out. Love could make someone stubborn, but only by letting go could one realize the relief that came with it.

"I’ll try. If I truly forget about him one day, I’ll definitely tell you who he is."

Hearing her say this, Ji Yu guessed that she might already know the person in question. But there was no rush—the truth would reveal itself eventually.

"Yuyu, how I wish I could be as carefree as you."

But what Feng Qinqin didn’t know was that while Ji Yu appeared detached, Gu Qixiao was agonizing over it.

Upon realizing Ji Yu had made up her mind to give up on him, he didn’t even know how to face the situation.

"Why does this have to happen to me?" he murmured with a helpless bitterness, although deep inside, what he really wanted was to salvage things.

Two married friends by his side couldn’t quite grasp his obsession. "Why are you so fixated on one person? If you can’t be together, it just means she isn’t the right one for you."

"But I only like her. Just her."

Gu Qixiao himself couldn’t pinpoint when his feelings for Ji Yu had started to seep into his very bones.

He couldn’t understand how someone could so swiftly pierce through the defenses of his heart. Yet, every moment reminded him: he liked Ji Yu. He couldn’t live without Ji Yu.

"Man, seems like Mr. Gu is well and truly smitten this time," Li Jingfeng remarked, growing curious about Ji Yu himself. What kind of person could enchant someone like Gu Qixiao so deeply?

Gu Qixiao downed one drink after another until he was visibly dazed. Li Jingfeng, chuckling mischievously, said, "Give us the phone number of the girl you like, and we’ll call her for you. Let’s find out why on earth she doesn’t like you."

And somehow, whether due to genuine inebriation or sheer desperation, Gu Qixiao actually complied.

When the call connected, Ji Yu was still having dinner with Feng Qinqin. "Hello, who’s this and what do you need?"

Her cool voice traveled through the line and into Gu Qixiao’s ears, making him suddenly falter.

But before he could hang up, Li Jingfeng interjected, "Miss Ji, I’m curious—why don’t you like Gu Qixiao? Do you think he doesn’t like you enough?"

"You guys must be awfully free," Ji Yu replied, quickly piecing together what was happening on the other side.

She found the whole thing rather distasteful. "I don’t think I owe you any explanations. Whatever is between Gu Qixiao and me is not up for discussion with anyone else."

She was about to end the call when Li Jingfeng hastily added, "You’ve misunderstood, Miss Ji. That’s not what we meant. Our Mr. Gu is crazy about you and just wants to know what, if anything, he’s done wrong. Even when marking someone for death, don’t the charges need to be spelled out?"

They genuinely wanted Gu Qixiao to be happy, but the situation was far from promising. This was their clumsy attempt at getting to the bottom of it.

But Ji Yu had no clue how to respond. "I’m not obligated to address that question, and I sincerely hope you’ll refrain from pulling such juvenile stunts again."

With that, Ji Yu ended the call.

Listening to the disconnected beeps from the other end, Li Jingfeng patted Gu Qixiao on the shoulder. "Honestly, I think you’re out of luck this time. Maybe it’s better to move on—you’ll realize you don’t even like her after a while."

Li Jingfeng spoke from experience. He knew most women would be repelled by antics like this.

"I’m going home." Gu Qixiao no longer felt like staying to drink, and moving on was hardly a simple task for him.

"Don’t bother trying to persuade me. When I’ve made a decision, I never go back on it."

His feelings would persist for a lifetime.

The others exchanged confused glances behind him.

"Honestly, this whole thing is such a headache. I used to think he’d end up with Song Xuan."

"Well, you’ve got to admit, Mr. Gu knows what he wants. That’s why he didn’t end up with Song Xuan."

No matter what they said or tried, it seemed their efforts to help Gu Qixiao amounted to little.

Meanwhile, after ending the call, Ji Yu frowned. She couldn’t quite wrap her head around why things had unfolded this way.

"Yuyu, are Gu Qixiao’s people harassing you? I’ll give them a piece of my mind," Feng Qinqin offered, indignant on Ji Yu’s behalf.

Ji Yu sighed helplessly. "It’s not that serious. From the looks of it, Gu Qixiao must’ve turned to drinking to drown his sorrows."

But even so, alcohol solved nothing. At best, it offered a temporary escape.

She tried not to dwell on Gu Qixiao, but Feng Qinqin could see that she seemed a bit distracted.

"Yuyu, I think you’re torturing yourself. If you like him, then just be with him openly. If he does something wrong later, then talk about breaking up."

Feng Qinqin couldn’t bear to see Ji Yu upset.

Ji Yu arched an eyebrow, accustomed to her approach. "I still prefer dealing with things my way."

Cutting the problem off at its root was better for both of them.

At least then, neither she nor Gu Qixiao would have to endure the awkwardness later on.

"You, of all people, haven’t even sorted out your own love life, and you’re already giving advice about mine."

The remark left Feng Qinqin momentarily speechless. She had to admit, maybe she was being a bit too nosy.

Compared to Gu Qixiao, she had achieved even less. At least Gu Qixiao would leave an indelible mark on Ji Yu’s heart. She had nothing at all.

"Yuyu, do you think an unreciprocated love is worth continuing?"

She was willing to give her all, but so far, she had received nothing in return. Was that really a good thing?

"Are you talking about a secret crush?"

"No... he did agree to be with me, but I think he’s regretting it now. He’s so cold to me." She looked heartbroken as she spoke, unsure how to resolve it once and for all.

"Whenever I want to have a proper conversation with him, it’s impossible. He rarely replies to my messages, and it’s like I don’t even exist."
