Chapter 54: Chapter 50: The Succession of King Yarlessto
Yarlessto found his father’s corpse on the third day.
The son of the Prophet destined to take over the entire Logos Kingdom saw his father’s face, how serene it was, as Yarlessto carried his father’s body down from the summit of the high mountain, weeping as he went.
Al, the Prophet of the Logos people, was ultimately buried at an altar on the mountainside.
To honor him, upon Yarlessto’s command, people shattered the Dragon Bone that could grant Eternal Life.
On the day of the Prophet’s burial, countless people gathered on the mountain, standing from the middle of the slope to the foot of the mountain, mourning the world’s first Prophet. The Logos people had no written language yet to record this scene and their thoughts with a mournful and beautiful prose.
Therefore, the Priests who survived from the Pattern Garden set out to paint a mural for Al. Craftsmen carved a wall out of the mountain using sturdy bones, people carried stones and cleared the surroundings, and children picked wildflowers and berries.
The entire Kingdom worked together, detailing Al’s life on the mural, from being endowed with speech, to ascending in pursuit of answers, to receiving enlightenment, establishing the Pattern Garden, and finally, that last arduous journey.
Amid the bewildering blizzards,
A mural was completed, and an era ended.
Yarlessto and Dertulian forgot their mutual enmity in this mourning, the two children wept in front of the mural for a long time, until dusk fell and their tears could not be wiped clean.
Seven days later, the Prophet’s eldest son took the Logos throne and ascended the King’s Throne.
He had just taken over a Kingdom, and although he had previously discussed tribal matters with the Elders, it was not until he truly ascended to the throne that Yarlessto realized that the future of the Kingdom in his hands was already gasping for breath and falling apart.
All of this was the aftermath of the Great Flood.
The flood submerged the hunting grounds originally delineated by the Kingdom, massive mudslides destroyed the environment, trees collapsed, the earth split, and the animals commonly seen were either washed away by the flood or scattered without a trace.
Yarlessto faced these changes astounded; the Kingdom’s hunting grounds were seeing a daily decrease in game, where once a group of Hunters could obtain enough food for hundreds within a few short days, but now, the Great Flood had altered the entire civilization’s environment.
With the decrease of game animals, not only did they lose food, but the fur clothing that kept them warm, and the bones used for tools like spears, also drastically diminished.
The Kingdom entered a dire state of clothing and food shortages, and without a solution, it wouldn’t be long before this difficulty turned into a dead end.
For several days, Yarlessto worried within the stone palace, watching the Hunters return unsuccessfully from their hunts, as a cloud of despair slowly enveloped the Kingdom.
A few days later, Elders of considerable influence, unable to endure hunger, ascended the long steps to the palace collectively, with impatience, anxiety, and fear spreading across their faces. The leading few knelt on the ground and then asked the new King for a promise.
"Yarlessto, you are our King, son of the Prophet, save us, and save yourself."
"King, if this continues, we can only migrate from this area like elephants, to find a suitable place to call home. Otherwise, the Logos people will starve to death here."
"We cannot migrate, what about our altar? What about our God?"
Yarlessto sat on the King’s Throne; it was the first time he faced a collective insurrection. After the initial shock, he stiffened his resolve and made a promise.
"I promise you, I will bring you food."
However, the Elders remained uneasy; a promise without proof was unreliable, so one of the Elders stepped forward and said:
"King, beg God, He will surely provide us with food."
When Yarlessto heard the Elder’s words, he almost lost his composure, for he and the deceased Al both knew the secret—God was asleep.
However, the words of that Elder did awaken something in Yarlessto.
Wheat.
God’s bestowed wheat.
Yarlessto suddenly stood up from his throne.
Over the years, under the guidance of Prophet Al, the Pattern Garden’s wheat often yielded only straw instead of grain, which had led to several arguments with his father.
At that time, the people of Logos disregarded the ears of wheat, treating the cornerstone of building a great nation as if it were merely straw.
Ultimately, this situation stemmed from an abundance of food that left no room for concern.
Compared to juicy berries and the fragrant aroma of roasted beast meat, plucked ears of wheat were bitter and dry, making it hard to recognize them as food.
Because the people of Logos had no need for wheat ears, they naturally refused to consider them as part of their diet.
Yarlessto, with an excited expression, approached those panicked elders and wise men and said with emotion,
"God’s arrangement, this is God’s arrangement, God foresaw this, so He gave us the wheat!"
The elders and wise men paused, then exchanged glances among themselves; they had all used straw for decoration and couldn’t immediately think of any other use for wheat.
"The great flood brought water and soft soil."
Yarlessto didn’t mind how confused the elders and wise men were, as he spoke more and more passionately,
"The grain... The foundation of a great nation lies in the grain. I had discussed this with my father long ago, the foundation isn’t in the straw! There’s plenty of wheat in the Pattern Garden and the priests have saved many seeds, let’s sow them all. They will be enough to feed everyone!"
After speaking, Yarlessto no longer cared about the reactions of the elders and wise men; he rushed out of the palace and headed towards the golden, splendid Pattern Garden.
Seeing the king leave the palace, the elders and wise men hastily followed.
They saw Yarlessto heading in the direction of the Pattern Garden.
Before long, Yarlessto had arrived outside the Pattern Garden.
It was now autumn, and he saw vast fields of wheat, ripe with abundant ears.
Yarlessto knelt down toward the summit of the high mountain, devoutly praising God from the depths of his heart and giving thanks.
Seeing the king kneel, the elders and wise men also knelt unanimously, muttering words of gratitude to the deity.
Then, the new king could hardly wait to summon all the priests, instructing them to bring over the collected seeds.
Yarlessto’s brother, the second son of the Prophet, Dertulian, was also among the priests and had recently been appointed to the priesthood.
He hid among the crowd, silently watching Yarlessto, now a king; no one knew what he was thinking.
The priests brought the seeds they had preserved over the days. When God had bestowed the wheat to Al some time ago, He had instructed how to care for it, and Al had passed on God’s commands to the priests.
"Sow it out, find fertile land; the great flood has just passed, and water is everywhere."
Yarlessto said with utmost solemnity,
"Then harvest the wheat ears from the Pattern Garden. As long as we survive this autumn and winter, once the newly sown seeds grow into wheat and are reaped, the people of Logos will no longer have to worry about food."
Just like that, the priests, carrying countless seeds, went looking for fertile ground within the kingdom, sowing as they walked.
After this civilization survived a difficult autumn and winter,
the people on Earth would once again feel God’s greatness through these divinely bestowed wheat.
