Chapter 376: Chapter 332 Imperial City

The tall city walls refracted a vast expanse of white light under the sunlight. Legend had it that this great city was so prosperous it possessed a thousand gates and three hundred layers of walls. Although the legend was exaggerated, the Danschel indeed had more than twenty gates and six layers of walls. Walking through the grand city gate and looking upward, one felt the walls as imposing as mountains. The imperial eagle flags hung on the towering towers, and behind the walls were densely arranged houses, many of which bore flags of various colors, representing different guilds.

Residents constantly came and went from the suburbs, not only people from Danschel but also countless foreigners, Beastmen, Three-eyed Ape People, and Dwarves, each using different languages. Over time, the originally unified Logos language had given birth to hundreds of languages. Not only were different races unable to communicate, but even members of the same race could be separated by a mountain or a river and not understand what the other was saying.

Anos, riding a horse, showed something to the guard stationed there and then spoke a few sentences in pure Danschel language. The guard immediately tensed, turned, and climbed up the city tower. Shortly after, the Guard Captain was brought over, looking up at Anos on horseback.

"Inform the Grand Steward," Anos ordered.

The Guard Captain did not delay; he immediately dispatched someone to sprint to the Imperial Palace on a fast horse, then respectfully saluted the princess on horseback, offering her a solemn bow.

Anos and Mira thus entered the city, with the latter curiously taking in the sights of the Imperial City.

Prosperous was the only way to describe it; everywhere were nobles and not a few lowly poor slaves. The former resided between the fifth and sixth city walls of the Imperial City, competing in luxury and intricacy. Towering aqueducts continuously delivered crystal-clear spring water there, while the latter lived in the outskirts and inside the first three walls, in cramped houses and narrow streets filled with filth, occasionally subjected to fires and riots.

The entire Danschel was like a well-ordered pyramid.

Anos led Mira toward the inner area of the sixth wall, their way unobstructed. The two captured assassins on horseback, still unconscious, did not realize they were being taken step by step to the center of the empire’s power.

Passing landmarks such as the Grand Theater, Elu Arena, the racetrack, Council, and the Grand Cathedral of Danschel... Mira finally beheld the magnificent Great Palace. She had often gazed at it from the heavens, but upon truly approaching this red-and-white Imperial Palace, she was still stunned.

The Chief Steward, waiting early at the palace gates, was a eunuch who bowed deeply to the returning princess; behind him followed only six or seven eunuch servants and palace maids, clearly indicating that Anos’s return had not disturbed many.

This Chief Steward named Romannus looked Mira up and down with his sharp eyes, who then showed him a friendly smile.

"Romannus, I will see the Emperor. Settle her and these two assassins first."

Anos dismounted, then mounted a new horse brought by a palace maid, turning back to instruct Mira,

"Please wait for me a moment, I will come to entertain you soon."

Faced with Anos’s instructions, Mira obediently nodded her head.

...............

Mira patiently waited for Anos’s return in the Palace, richly adorned. The Chief Steward Romannus stood near Mira like a wooden statue, seeming to monitor her every move yet also as if guarding her safety.

This Palace served to entertain envoys and the kin of other kings. Mira curiously inspected every decoration here, whether historical antiques or gemstones embedded in the walls, driven by novelty, she never tired of looking.

Mira had been there for nearly half a day until the sun began to set, and the sky turned a dense yellow, when Anos’s figure finally appeared in the Palace.

The wood-like Romannus finally moved, meeting her and respectfully said,

"Your Highness... Your injuries, you should rest properly..."

"Thank you for your reminder and your impeccable loyalty.

But now, I need to entertain my lifesaver."

Upon finishing, Anos added,

"I believe God would also be pleased to see my actions."

"It is by the will of God,"

Romannus replied in a low voice, a commonly used everyday phrase.

Though the Danschel Empire accommodated different beliefs and tolerated thousands of Divine Statues, at the heart of the Empire, whether it was the Council of Elders, the Council in the capital, or the high and mighty Emperor himself, all were baptized True Believers.

Seeing Anos approaching, Mira excitedly waved her hand.

Anos walked over, her face adorned with a polite smile, and she sat down in front of Mira.

"How have you been finding it here?"

she asked.

"Not bad, this place is truly beautiful."

Mira praised sincerely, then she asked:

"Why did those people try to assassinate you?"

"That is a complex question. Before answering that, I want to ask you something, Mira."

Hearing the Princess’s question, Mira nodded.

"Where are you from? Why did you appear out of nowhere, falling from the sky? What do you want to do in Danschel?"

Anos’s questions came rapidly, like rapid-fire.

Mira organized these questions in her mind and after hesitating, she responded:

"I cannot tell you where I am from."

"So, why did you fall from the sky?"

Anos pressed further.

"You ask why I fell from the sky, it’s because I was holding a paraglider and just happened to land there..."

Mira answered honestly.

The Princess, her face showing surprise, incredulously said:

"So, out of thousands of places in the world, you just happened to land beside me?"

"Yes, it’s quite miraculous, isn’t it? I think so too."

Already accustomed to dealing with deceit in her hold on power, the Princess could not see a trace of falsehood on Mira’s face.

"Alright... What do you want to do in Danschel?"

Anos, half-believing Mira’s words, asked the final question.

"Experience the breeze here, observe the passersby, see buildings as grand and majestic as this Imperial Palace... oh, and the opera, I want to see an opera!"

Facing Anos, the pure-hearted Mira shared her purpose in coming to Danschel without any reservation.

And the Empire’s Princess saw Mira’s eyes sparkling.

For some reason, beneath that clear gaze, she found herself irresistibly wanting to fulfill Mira’s wishes.

"Alright then... have you... heard of the Thousand Cities Academy?"
