Chapter 345: Chapter 302: Angel and Angel

The long-awaited reunion moved Bennice to tears, and the water in the well surged up and fell repeatedly, as if expressing her emotions.

For over a thousand years, the Fairy of the Lake’s yearning for Solamus never waned. Sometimes, Bennice would look back in a daze, suddenly realizing that everything she had experienced was exactly as Solamus had said, which made her adore the once Holy Maiden even more.

Bennice sat by the well’s edge, prattling on to Solamus about her experiences over the years.

During these years, countless people sought the whereabouts of the Fairy of the Lake, and numerous others returned unsuccessfully; only a little more than twenty people ever succeeded in meeting her, a scant few indeed.

Among these few, almost everyone initially received what they desired. The generous Bennice granted them various gifts, but after possessing the Fairy’s gifts, some could not resist temptation, their conduct no longer noble, and the gifts they had were reclaimed.

Rumor had it that when the Fairy took back her gifts, she did more than just reclaim them—the recipients had to pay back double.

Bennice was no longer the simple child of yesteryear, but she still retained her naive kindness. She took the instructions once given to her by Solamus as her guiding principle, living as a chaste and noble Fairy in the middle of Lake Heart Island. Outside, countless people sang her legend and discussed her deeds, but here nobody could disturb her peace and thus corrupt her virtue.

"Once a Prince came here; he was gentle and kind, but pursued by his enemies. To seek refuge, he swam desperately to Lake Heart Island, and then, I lent him the sword you gave to me. Later, with that sword, he became the ruler of a nation."

The Fairy told of the past,

"He championed the weak and was just and gallant, defending the small states that had helped him against the onslaught of larger countries. Under his command were many heroes, who offered him their loyalty and fought with valor. His people under the Palace enjoyed a peaceful and modest, yet happy life.

Yet, it was such a Monarch who was unwilling to return the sword to me. He pledged to return it after twenty years, but when the time came, he sought to pass it on to his son instead.

After telling the Water God this, Angel punished him, allowing a venomous snake to bite his son. The toxin tormented the Crown Prince for nine days and nights, which led the King to a sudden realization of regret, requesting one of his heroes to cast the sword into the waters of the lake.

However, the hero was unwilling to see the King lose the powerful, sovereign sword. Without the Divine Sword, the King would be like a man missing an arm.

Thus, the hero hesitated by the water, and on the third day, upon realizing that the Crown Prince would die of the poison, he secretly returned with the sword, hoping to coerce the King into keeping the Divine Sword..."

The story Bennice narrated was nothing short of captivating. Solamus detected a hint of a sigh in her voice, indicating the story had once moved her deeply.

"What happened then?"

Solamus asked.

"After the Prince died, the King was inconsolable. When he learned that the hero had not returned the sword, in a fit of rage, he ordered the execution of that once-great hero.

As a result, a bloody internal war erupted, with both sides paying a terrible price in the ensuing battle. Ultimately, the hero fell in battle, and the King’s better days were no more.

Years later, I saw an old man, white-haired and limping, come to the lake’s edge. He wore no crown, nor did he carry the Scepter. He silently cast the sword into the water. I reached out from beneath the surface to take back the Divine Sword, and then he stared long into the water, as I vanished from his sight."

After finishing her grand tale, Bennice sighed wistfully,

"People always say, ’What was given must be repaid double.’ Actually, I never required them to repay me double. It was their own nobility fading, their unwillingness to relinquish my gifts that brewed disaster."

Bennice spoke softly.

It was apparent that all these years had had a profound impact on the Fairy of the Lake, leaving her reflective to this day.

"So... Holy Maiden, now that you’ve come to see me... does it mean..."

Having recounted the past, Bennice trailed off, cautiously inquiring,

"You said at the time that you had seen a kingdom soon to descend, a flawless great city..."

Solamus nodded gently upon hearing this, and said softly,

"Yes, the time is almost upon us."

As her words fell on her ears, Bennice countered,

"But how long is that going to be? Almost every person who comes to see me, I tell them of your words... Oh, you’ve spoken many a wise word to me, and when I relay them, they come to think I’m as perceptive and intelligent as you..."

Bennice hadn’t finished her speech when the originally calm lake surface suddenly started churning violently.

At that moment, a strange phenomenon abruptly emerged; water surged out of nowhere, gathering on the surface of the lake and gradually coalescing into a pure and unblemished figure, mist at either side parting like tightly shut doors being pushed open, while the already drooping reeds bowed even lower as if subjects awaiting the arrival of their king.

The Water God Angel slowly approached Lake Heart Island.

Bennice looked astonished; she hurriedly stood up from the edge of the well and then respectfully performed a curtsy for Angel.

Solamus watched the approaching Water God with calm scrutiny.

Angel slowly walked forward and began to speak,

"How shall I address you?

We have never met, yet I have long heard of the many legends you’ve left behind amongst the divines.

The miracles over the sea, the spirit light in the firmament?

The fool who squandered wealth?

The wisest of the wise, the philosopher of philosophers?

Or should I say... the Holy Maiden of the Water God Temple...

Or perhaps,

The Envoy of our Father?"

As Water God Angel spoke, a faint smile appeared on her face.

Solamus stood up from the edge of the well, well aware of Angel’s identity, and she had come to Lake Heart Island for more than just a reunion with Bennice.

Bennice looked at Water God and Solamus, revealing an expression of surprise.

After so many years, she had guessed that Solamus was actually not the Holy Maiden of the Water God, but she had not expected that the Water God and Solamus seemed to know each other.

When Solamus walked up to Water God Angel, the Water God raised her hand and gave a slight gesture of respect.

"Blessings upon you, Envoy of our Father; I meet with you on behalf of the divines of the Celestial Kingdom."

After speaking, Angel laughed self-deprecatingly and added in a low voice,

"Of course, only a part of the divines."
