Chapter 34 - 31 Setting Out

Chapter 34: Chapter 31 Setting Out

A grueling long journey lied ahead, the endpoint at the very boundary of the world.

No Priest knew where that place was, nor why Prophet Al suddenly proclaimed he must leave the Kingdom to venture toward a faraway land no one had ever set foot in.

God’s guidance, God’s revelation... Even straightforward words couldn’t dispel the confusion of the Priests.

"Prophet, why not let someone else go in your stead... You are old."

A Priest stepped forward, asking with incomprehension:

"Look at your body... Your back is bent, just stay in the Pattern Garden filled with golden wheat."

Another Priest, almost as old as Al, approached with a reluctance to let go and advised:

"Al, like you, others misunderstand us for being outdated, but I know that at our age, we have done enough for the younger generations and we no longer have the strength, we must stay where we are. Now... why suffer to go to a place so far you cannot return?"

Beyond the well-meaning persuasion, those young Priests who did not follow the Prophet or thought the Prophet was old-fashioned, not only failed to understand but also mocked Al in secret for his overestimation of his abilities. To a place not even the Kingdom’s bravest Hunters could venture, how could an old man reach such a distant end?

Al looked at the people of all types around him: misunderstanding, pitiful, sympathetic... How many thought he was muddled by enthusiasm, forgetting how truly old he was.

The Prophet left with only one sentence:

"I am the chosen one and thus destined to bear witness to God’s story."

Al and Yarlessto, father and son, were to embark on this journey.

They knew not what they would encounter on the journey, nor could they be certain that there was an absolute answer waiting for them at its end.

The ever-skeptical Yarlessto was anxious about it.

Now and then, Yarlessto stood up, loudly arguing the feasibility of the journey; other times, he would sit down suddenly, meticulously listing the dubious aspects... Often he would fall silent only to loudly reproach his own thoughts the next second.

He felt as though he was being driven mad.

Compared to his eldest son, Al was much calmer.

With the help of his wife and servants, Al quickly packed up everything needed for the trip. In fact, for the Logos people still in the Stone Age, the essentials needed for a journey were not numerous.

Al inspected the packed goods, and then slowly walked over to his anxious eldest son,

"When we leave, God instructed us that once we are ready, we should go to the farthest river in the Kingdom."

At that moment, Yarlessto looked up, grasping his hair in irritation.

"I know, Father."

Yarlessto said impatiently, and then, noticing the unusual calm on Al’s face, he asked:

"Why aren’t you worried at all?"

Al simply said:

"You must have faith in God, Yarlessto. I know you have not ascended the mountain to see God as often as I have; you do not understand Him, you do not know Him, and that’s why you have so many doubts."

"Is it wrong to have doubts?"

Yarlessto retorted.

He caressed the Bone Knife in his embrace, a gift from his mother.

Al shook his head, neither agreeing nor disagreeing.

These kinds of conversations had occurred many times between father and son, and as Al gradually aged, the frequency with which the prophet responded with silence increased.

Yarlessto didn’t know whether his father’s silence was due to a lack of counterargument or because arguing with him was simply not significant.

The day Al and Yarlessto left the kingdom to embark on their journey, the Sapo King did not grant an audience to the priestly father and son pair.

It was unclear whether the Sapo King was unaware of their departure or had intentionally chosen not to see them, but that information was now unknowable.

They left while the sky was still dim and the sun had not yet risen, so there weren’t many Logos people to see them off on their journey, and the hustle and bustle they had hoped for the day of death did not reappear.

Leaving the heart of the kingdom, Al looked back one last time at the stone palaces on the ground; as they moved away, the silhouette of the palaces slowly disappeared into the layers of forests.

Chen Yi stood on the furthest river of the kingdom, with unicorns bowing their heads to sip, and tender, dripping green grass growing on both banks, as the broad and gentle currents washed the fine sands along the shore.

Looking towards the edge of the world, their gaze traversed an unimaginable distance, reaching the Ancient Chaos.

"The Great Flood is destined to come."

Chen Yi recalled the future seen within the Deep Red Star—those wails, those loud lamentations, all vivid before their eyes.

When the time came, the sky would suddenly pour down a pale prehistoric downpour, with the vast majority of life dying off; only a few could desperately cling to life, floating on the water’s surface. The Great Flood would submerge most of the land, a dizzying transformation as the earth and mountains would in the blink of an eye become ocean reefs, and the cliffs would be submerged into the seabed Abyss.

They lifted their hand, examining the broken horn of a Unihorn in the palm of their hand.

"Since the Unihorns can manipulate the sea..."

Chen Yi recalled the beached Unihorn,

"Then, when disaster strikes, the Unihorns could provide shelter for the Logos people."

They had carefully studied their own powers in these days.

In other words, they had already become intimately familiar with their abilities.

God stood by the riverbank, waiting quietly.

It wasn’t long before a rustling of leaves came from the dense woods nearby.

Hearing this rustling sound, the unicorns by the river instantly became alert and, following a lead cry, nearly all the unicorns ceased their sipping and vanished into the forest in the blink of an eye.

Almost simultaneously, Al and Yarlessto emerged from the woods.

Chen Yi, upon seeing the father and son, showed relief and a smile blossomed on their face.

"God, we have arrived, how shall we proceed with our journey?"

Al stepped forward, seeking guidance from God.

God turned and pointed at a towering tree by the riverbank.

Al and Yarlessto looked over and saw God slowly walk towards the tree, then with a gentle lift of the hand, the tree erupted from within, shattering thunderously to the ground.

Father and son watched in amazement at the even cut.

And God’s motions did not cease; they placed their hand on the severed tree, and a glimmer of light fell from the palm, as the bark fell layer by layer, and the thick blocks of wood began to separate.

Watching the tree’s head tilt upward, and tail end rise, forming a boat-like shape with sharp, tapered ends, Yarlessto, though never having encountered the sea as the Logos kingdom was still within the realms of land, keenly realized this was some kind of special raft made of a single piece of wood.

"Board this dugout canoe."
