Chapter 328: Chapter 285: Visiting Hiris
The Forest God Lipo descended into the world following the Netherworld King’s death. Due to the inherent nature of the Forest God, the moment He set foot upon this forbidding, bone-chilling land, a smattering of flowers and grasses emerged from the ground.
Lipo’s divine power could produce flora in the Netherworld, but at the same time, the ceaseless, chilling winds of the Netherworld also made the Forest God feel uneasy.
Having come in haste, Lipo hadn’t sent a messenger ahead to notify the Death God Nakbet of His arrival, and so He was treated as an invader by the guardian dog of the Netherworld, Cerberus.
Cerberus rose up on its hind legs. Within the dark, sunless Netherworld, the souls were terrified by the fearsome beast’s aura and the thick, acrid stench of its murderous intent, crying and clutching their heads by the riverbank.
Lipo stared in astonishment at the three-headed dog, the gatekeeper of the Netherworld and Nakbet’s pet, which, nourished by the Netherworld, had gained strength no less than that of a Third Rank divine being.
This Netherworld, capable of nurturing such a creature as Cerberus, made it clear how many souls the Netherworld must contain.
The three-headed hound shuffled its paws and growled deeply, its mountainous body tense as if it might charge at any moment to tear the uninvited guest to shreds.
"Guardian of the Netherworld, I am the Forest Master Lipo. I am here to visit my friend Hiris," Lipo said.
Empowered by His divine power, His voice rang out and echoed through a third of the Netherworld.
Cerberus still appeared on guard, glaring fiercely at Lipo, as if it wished it could devour the intruder whole.
Lipo, however, was not afraid. His words to the three-headed dog were also meant for Hiris, the mountain and craftsman God.
Soon, a wind from the Netherworld stirred, and in the distance from the deep recesses of the Netherworld, there came Hiris, wearing Four-Wind Flying Boots and riding upon the wild gusts.
"Long time no see, Lipo," Hiris said with a smile as he landed.
Lipo sighed with relief.
Seeing Hiris, Cerberus immediately sat back on the ground, wagging its tail excitedly and sticking out all three tongues, panting with "haha" sounds.
Hiris walked over and fondly roughed up the middle head.
The other two heads approached, seeking attention, but Hiris found it too troublesome and gave each a gentle pat instead.
The two heads on the sides looked discouraged, while the middle one excitedly raised its canine face, the other two heads enviously eyeing the middle one.
Hiris approached Lipo and asked,
"Lipo, why have you come to visit me?
You should know the winds of the Netherworld chill to the bone, and many divines cannot bear it, actively avoiding this Netherworld."
Upon hearing this, Lipo replied in a measured tone,
"Hiris, I too cannot tolerate the chill of the Netherworld.
This place is ultimately a gathering ground for lost spirits, not a dwelling for divines.
But I must visit you to seek knowledge about the ancient history."
After hearing this, Hiris looked around and realized that the souls around them had instinctively slowed their pace, watching the two divines with awe.
"Alright, Lipo, it’s not convenient to talk here. Let’s go to my residence. On the way, I’ll fill you in on the recent state of the Netherworld," Hiris said.
Lipo nodded. He had never before set foot in this Netherworld and was curious.
Hiris thus led Lipo to the river Feather Sink, where the mountain and craftsman God took out a Gold Coin and tossed it to the boatman. Moments later, a huge ship emerged before Them and ferried the two divines across to the other side.
Along the way, Hiris introduced Lipo to the various circumstances of the Netherworld and the major events that had occurred since its establishment.
Walking to the Judgment Hall of the Netherworld, Hiris mentioned that the most noteworthy trial of the past few centuries was the trial of King Anuket.
Hundreds of years ago, King Anuket of the Land of Ajia died on his throne due to a rebellion among the people.
The Death God Nakbet took the king’s soul, along with others, into the Netherworld, getting ready for the judges of the Netherworld to put him on trial when suddenly, he received a request from Kagawus.
"Kagawus requested Nakbet to hold onto Anuket, to wait until he had finished depicting the course of destiny, and then come personally to judge him."
Hiris spoke slowly of this history; in the eyes of the Divine, the world’s changes were but a moment, and many worldly matters were not worth mentioning, but the encounter of King Anuket was deeply imprinted in Hiris’s memory.
"Even today, I still remember King Anuket’s wailing at the time."
Hiris said with emotion,
"It felt like... all things had shattered, the very deities that one had always believed in were personally judging one’s sins.
If you insist on a comparison," added Hiris, "in Anuket’s eyes, it was like a mother was going to strangle her own child with her bare hands."
Lipo then asked,
"So what happened in the end? Where did Anuket go?"
Hiris replied slowly,
"Kagawus sentenced him to the ultimate punishment, casting him into the Punishment Wilderness of the Netherworld, to eternally suffer the most terrible torments."
After finishing the story of Anuket, Hiris and Lipo walked and talked, with the former recounting many deeds of souls to the latter, all of whom had left more or less a mark in history, like Queen Isis of the Land of Ajia, and like the serpent kings who once abandoned gemstones.
Before long, the two Divines walked through all areas of the Netherworld, and Hiris took Lipo to his own mansion.
In Hiris’s mansion, there were the souls of mortals, who served as his servants.
Lipo was not surprised by this.
After they sat down in the mansion, the Forest God went straight to the point.
"Hiris, what do you know about ancient history?"
"Lipo, of course, I know a little about ancient history, though it’s just the tip of the iceberg."
Hiris paused and then said earnestly,
"Go ahead and ask, my friend."
Lipo took a deep breath, but instead of asking directly, firstly recounted the story of the witch in the forest.
At the start, the mortal servants in the mansion paid no mind, but as Lipo’s story progressed, they started to secretly exchange glances.
When Lipo reached the point of speaking about "the master," one of the mortals couldn’t help but bow his head slightly and cautiously clasp his hands together.
After recounting everything, the Forest God Lipo looked straight at Hiris.
He saw that Hiris’s expression slowly shifted from casual to solemn, and in the depths of his eyes, there seemed to be a hint of excitement.
"Lipo, are you talking about... ’Law’? What did the witch mention about ’Law’?"
Hiris asked, unable to hide his eagerness.
Lipo was somewhat surprised at the craftsman’s excitement and explained in a measured voice,
"I’m not sure, the witch said that the Law would descend with a kingdom..."
Bang.
A mortal servant accidentally shattered a vase.
