Chapter 317 - 274: What price are you willing to pay?
Chapter 317: Chapter 274: What price are you willing to pay?
Everyone is ultimately destined to die, leave this world, and journey to the Netherworld as a fleeting spirit.
Seleucus, however, refused to accept such a fate.
He was the Monarch of a great nation, his veins coursed with Divine blood; death should have no claim over him, and the rivers of the Netherworld should never dampen his soul.
Over the years, Seleucus sought out the exceptional figures within his nation, yet no one could provide a satisfactory answer, which made the Monarch increasingly irritable; he even once lost his composure and publicly executed a Magician who had offended him.
"Father... The Tailbone Tribe has rebelled."
The third Prince knelt on one knee before the throne, reporting the recent state of the Kingdom to King Seleucus.
"That Tiger Tribe, I knew it, those barbaric Beastmen are too arrogant, even if they submit for one generation, they will rebel in the next."
King Seleucus, upon hearing the third Prince’s report, spewed angrily,
"Besides these annoyances, my child, is there not a single piece of good news?"
The third Prince hurriedly spoke,
"Father, there is! I heard that the renowned Physician Carlo has already arrived at the Royal Capital. When would you like to summon her?"
King Seleucus raised his eyebrows.
Two years ago, he had heard of Carlo’s deeds and promptly urged the Monarch of that small country to send her over.
But in those two years, Carlo had made various excuses to delay, which frustrated King Seleucus even further; a few months ago, he issued a final ultimatum.
Now, Carlo had finally arrived; his long wait finally bore fruit.
"In three days, no, the day after tomorrow, I will summon her."
King Seleucus abruptly stood up from the throne, excitedly declared:
"Host her well, accommodate any of her requests, go, and do not disappoint me."
The third Prince nodded gravely, and after receiving his orders, quickly left the Palace.
King Seleucus held the Scepter; he called an Attendant forward to prepare the royal robe he would wear for the occasion.
"Your Majesty... is it necessary to be this formal?"
The Attendant hesitated.
Royal robes were elaborate and typically used only for imperial conferences or when receiving diplomats.
"Do not doubt me."
King Seleucus’s voice was deep,
"I have a premonition... that Carlo... might indeed bring me the method for Eternal Life."
.........
Upon her arrival at the Royal City, Carlo received a warm welcome from the third Prince of Liboga and others.
They prepared a small celebration for the well-known Physician, sprinkled clear water and petals on the main streets of the Royal City, and held a grand banquet introducing her to the major Nobles and their spouses, and other esteemed lineages.
The hospitality of the Liboga Kingdom was generous, making Carlo somewhat overwhelmed.
Years flashed by, and she suddenly looked back, no longer that midwife who was once terrified by a failed delivery, transformed into a phoenix through two bottles of Magic Potion from the Witch.
Carlo, slightly tipsy, entered the residence prepared for her; as soon as she stepped into the bedroom, her hairs stood on end and most of her drunkenness faded.
In the dark bedroom, the black-robed Witch stood in the moonlight.
"Esteemed lady."
Carlo bowed respectfully.
Mona looked at the woman in front of her, how she longed to call her mother.
But she couldn’t; she was bound by a wager, violating which would mean she’d have to part from her mother forever and retreat into the Secret Forest, becoming that nefarious Witch brewing Magic Potions.
Seeing the Witch remained silent, Carlo grew somewhat anxious:
"Lady... could you provide me with that all-curing Miracle Potion?
Besides that... if possible, do you know... if there’s a Magic Potion in this world that grants Eternal Life?"
Mona, having heard this, finally began to speak slowly,
"Carlo, you ask for too much."
Carlo, frightened, quickly shut her mouth and after a long while hastily said,
"I apologize, my lady, I was overly boisterous. I await your command."
Over the years, Mona had long passed her voice-changing phase, and with the addition of a minor illusion technique cast by Solamus, Carlo did not recognize from the voice that it was her own daughter, Amina.
"I will give you the All-Spirit Magic Potion, but...
what will you give in exchange?
Or rather,
what price are you willing to pay?"
Mona spoke in a very indifferent tone, deliberately using these subtle hints to keep Carlo at a distance.
However, in Carlo’s eyes, no matter how indifferent the witch’s words were, they were the greatest temptation.
"Noble lady... it depends on what you want."
Carlo said excitedly.
"So... I want a noble’s child, and if you give me one, I’ll give you a third of a bottle of All-Spirit Magic Potion."
Mona whispered in a low voice.
"Noble lady! Praise you! Someone should erect a statue for you... you are more worthy of offerings than many divines!"
Carlo readily agreed, nauseatingly praising the witch before her.
Carlo rushed out of the bedroom, commanding the attendant assigned to her in a sharp and cutting tone.
As an apprentice to the witch, Mona had taken various kinds of magic potions, one of which made her exceptionally sharp-eyed and keen-eared.
She quickly realized that Carlo was deceiving the attendant, lying under the guise of a renowned physician, just to abduct a noble’s child.
Mona’s feelings were mixed.
"If it were mom’s child I wanted... no, mom wouldn’t do this."
Mona consoled herself with difficulty.
She stood in the dark bedroom, watching her mother, step by step, moving in a direction opposite to her expectations.
.........
Fire God Ninur stood midair in the Royal City, sweeping his gaze over the large and small streets.
Over these years, Ninur had asked a hidden divine proficient in illusion techniques to craft a ritual for him. Once the ritual was set up and Seleucus was ensnared in the illusion, he would believe in the illusion of eternal life.
And all of this development must be seamless to successfully deceive his clever royal son.
Ninur’s gaze slowly fell on the physician, Carlo, and at the same time, he also noticed the black-robed witch.
"So that’s it... the renowned physician who cures all relies merely on the witch’s magic potions."
Fire God scoffed at this vulgar woman, clearly, she had little medical skill, nothing without the witch’s magic potions.
But soon, he thought.
This so-called renowned physician and the mysterious witch might be the key to entrapping Seleucus in the illusion.
A famous healer who brings the secret technique of eternal life.
It sounded so incredibly plausible.
Fire God Ninur turned his head, looking back at the magnificent palace of the kingdom, and murmured solemnly,
"Seleucus, my son,
I hope you never awaken from this eternal dream of life.
If you do awaken, then I hope you realize that the notion of eternal life is nothing but a pipe dream.
If you still refuse to see reason,
then as a father, I must take the necessary discipline."
