Chapter 288: Chapter 248 Cleanse the Sins
An unprecedented uprising erupted.
The True Believers of the New Rule Garden spread the word; they constituted one-tenth of all Stone Slaves, and thereby unleashed an astonishing force. The cries of the revolt spread from one to ten, ten to a hundred, hundred to a thousand... In an instant, all the Stone Slaves of the Royal City burst forth with long-suppressed rage!
The Stone Slaves picked up wooden poles, nail rakes, shovels...they grabbed anything that could be used as a weapon. Under the leadership of the New Rule Garden, the slaves, the freemen, and the Noble True Believers who could no longer endure Antion’s rule, surged like a cataclysmic flood toward the high and mighty.
King Antion had executed the Stone Slaves so abruptly; just as abruptly did the city rise in revolt.
This long-simmering uprising caught every Noble Minister off guard.
The Guards defending the Royal City were the first to be struck; the Stone Slaves stripped them of their armor, seized their swords, and the unprepared Guards were utterly routed, some killed, others wounded.
Led by Xilan, they stormed the Kingdom’s armory.
It was Casas who had shown them where it was.
Xilan, holding a sword and being an Elf, easily decapitated two guards. His bravery inspired the surging crowd of rebels who, with their numerical advantage, effortlessly overwhelmed the guards of the armory.
They seized swords and armor by the armory, donned them, and thousands were armed.
Xilan had no idea how many had joined the uprising; heads crowded as far as the eye could see, perhaps tens or even hundreds of thousands?
He didn’t know; the entire Royal City was in turmoil, with smoke billowing everywhere.
Although most of the insurgents were untrained mobs, their numbers were enough to trample every street.
In his campaign to expand his territories and build an everlasting legacy, King Antion had called away most of the Royal City’s garrison and the armies of the city-states. Now, the wise but selfish King was finally paying the price for his ambition.
Xilan looked towards the distant Palace and the Great Temple; the latter lay before the former, and to reach the Palace, they had to pass through the Great Temple.
"The Great Temple is our inevitable path!"
As soon as these words fell, a response came in unison; the crowd roared, calling for the deaths of the corrupt Priests who had persecuted them alongside the King!
Xilan led the charge, and soon, they were climbing the long steps of the Great Temple; countless feet literally shattered the stone steps.
The entire Great Temple shook as though in an earthquake.
The Priests who had once blocked Antion were in total disarray; they were trapped on the steps of the Great Temple, with no route of escape.
Xilan charged into the Great Temple and saw the pale-faced High Priest Hetep.
High Priest Hetep retreated step by step, backing away from Xilan who wielded a sword.
"You cannot kill me, I am the High Priest of Kagawus, Kagawus must watch over me!"
Hetep cried shrilly in protest.
But Xilan continued forward, his bronze sword gleaming coldly.
"Please, spare me...
I was only following the orders of His Majesty the King; I had no choice, it was the King’s will!"
When no retreat was left, Hetep knelt on the ground, shivering all over.
"You are guilty, you must die."
"You are a Priest, yet you acted on human desires, not according to the will of God."
Xilan stared coldly at him, thrusting his sword forward, shattering Hetep’s guts, his hands covered in fresh blood.
"Wait for judgment in death."
Hetep’s eyes bulged; Xilan kicked him away, and his body fell backwards, struggling on the ground before bleeding out to death.
The remaining Priests let out a scream of horror, desperately trying to flee but falling one by one into the hands of the angry rebels, quickly torn apart and killed.
Only Antion, who had been trapped in the library by the Priests, was spared.
Xilan rescued him.
Antion looked at Xilan, then spoke gravely,
"I know what you are going to do."
Xilan nodded.
"Go...I have already asked Kagawus."
Antion spoke softly.
Xilan smiled, offering his final thanks to this friend.
Then he turned to the surging crowd, pointing his sword at the splendid palace.
"The sinner is there!"
The uprising True Believers erupted in cheers.
Xilan’s hands were bloody, the unjust and unclean to be ended by the sword, past tears, former persecutions, mingling with the blood of the Martyrs on the ground; they must cleanse this place of its sins, to prepare a never-before-seen land of justice for the impending Heavenly City!
...
...
Above the Palace,
King Anuket sat high on his throne, still unaware of the uprising.
He faintly heard the noise outside the palace, subconsciously thinking it was a disturbance in the square.
Executions followed by riots in the square were all too normal for King Anuket since he had ascended to the throne.
His gaze swept over every Minister present, but he could not see the Vice Chancellor Ibia.
Rage roiled in King Anuket’s heart.
Not long ago, it was that weather-vane Prime Minister who, leading the Ministers present, had questioned him.
His once firm authority had faltered amidst their accusing voices.
Fortunately, the Ministers’ anger had been redirected onto the True Believers, thankfully he still had this scapegoat.
Then, facing his Ministers, King Anuket spoke coldly,
"My subjects, those True Believers must pay the price.
Now, that one named Daniel has been executed.
What remains is Xilan from New Rule Garden, I didn’t expect those long-lived Elves to seek such fatal actions."
The Vice Chancellor then stepped forward, advising,
"Your Majesty, there is no delay, we must send someone to New Rule Garden now to capture that Xilan, otherwise, he will escape the Royal City under the protection of the True Believers!"
Normally, the Vice Chancellor was the representative of the Nobles who despised the True Believers.
King Anuket nodded slowly, the king’s majesty lingered on his scepter and crown.
Now, the Noble Ministers’ anger was directed at the True Believers, his power stabilized once more, no longer tolerating any dissent.
King Anuket scoffed,
"Then send someone, let several generals redeem their faults, leading a few thousand to encircle those True Believers."
Among the Noble Ministers, no one spoke for the True Believers of New Rule Garden.
Whether purely out of hatred for True Believers or unwilling to invite trouble, they resumed cursing at them, wanting to expel all those who believed in their God from the grand Royal City.
At that moment,
in the square outside the palace,
a wave of sound shook the entire Palace.
