Chapter 259: Chapter 222 Scatty’s Desire
In the Celestial Kingdom’s myriad stars, the icy blue Winter Star twinkled in the deep night.
Clad in an ice-blue robe, the Winter God Skadi gazed upon the frozen land stretching for thousands of miles to the north, contemplating something.
Skadi witnessed countless divines creating races upon the earth. Some thrived and established their own civilizations, like the Three-eyed Ape People and the Beastmen; others struggled to survive, living on raw flesh and blood, like the fauns—half-man, half-goat creatures living in forests, also known as Pan—created by the Wine God. This race lived in isolation, coming together only during the brief spring for mating purposes, otherwise living alone.
The Winter God Skadi knew that creating a race was no easy task, so She decided instead to lead someone as a leader to establish a kingdom standing amidst the icy snow.
However, at the very start, Skadi encountered a problem.
How could She make this kingdom rise abruptly from the ground and stand the test of time in the world?
Skadi realized that She needed a hero who could establish a kingdom.
After a lengthy period of observation, Her gaze settled on three heroes riding to battle across the sand.
They were the Lion-man Adrian, the Tiger-man Kars, and Baird of Ajia.
Skadi saw the three heroes fighting side by side, galloping through large and small battles, supporting each other like three strands of rope not easily torn apart.
The Winter God Skadi took special notice of these three men. Among them, She favored Baird the most, but Baird’s heart was set on gemstones, which left Skadi profoundly disappointed.
Thus, Skadi turned Her attention to Adrian and Kars. Compared to the older Adrian, Kars captured Her interest more.
After choosing the hero to establish the kingdom, Skadi began to ponder how to make him willingly follow Her command.
Skadi had tried sending dreams, auditory illusions, and even showing Herself in the midst of tempests, but Tiger-man Kars seemed not to be willing to take the risk, nor was he swayed. He insisted on following Baird, unwilling to leave their group unless the latter achieved his own goals.
The Winter God was exceedingly vexed by this.
At this time, the Death God Nakbet sought to build the afterworld and, for this reason, sought the help of the Winter God Skadi.
Skadi, riding in a sleigh drawn by four frost moose, arrived at the distant Death Star on the icy chill wind from the Winter Star. On this planet surface, which was pervaded by the aura of death and desolation, the gentle Death God Nakbet leaned on His scythe, conversing merrily with a soul named Asis.
"You’ve come, Skadi."
Death God Nakbet raised His hand and paused His conversation with Asis.
He slowly greeted the Winter God who had come from afar.
"What do you want me to do?"
Skadi swept Her gaze across the star before Her.
There, Hiris, the God of Mountains and Craftsmanship, toiled on the star, sweating profusely, dedicating Himself to the work of carving tunnels and erecting tall buildings.
Skadi saw the plains, wilderness, and strange mountains taking basic shape under Hiris’s Divine Hammer. The Netherworld’s edifices, intricately layered, were as numerous as a child’s blocks. A six-tiered Netherworld slowly emerged into form.
"Perhaps I should call you Monarch of the Netherworld."
Skadi said.
"Thank you, Skadi. I just didn’t expect your compliments to be so cold as well,"
Death God Nakbet said with a smile.
"What do you need from me?"
Without further ado, Skadi asked directly.
Death God Nakbet turned around and pointed to Asis standing not far away.
"That’s a human."
Skadi said.
Death God Nakbet recounted the trouble they encountered to Skadi.
Originally, although the Death God had brought Asis’s soul to the Netherworld, if there wasn’t a tremendous willpower within oneself, the soul couldn’t stay for long. As time passed, Asis’s soul would involuntarily drift towards the summit of the high mountain.
"That place is like it has a very strong gravitational pull."
Nakbet described.
Skadi gazed at the distant mountain summit. They hardly understood the legendary father, nor did they bother to.
After all... that decaying father was far too distant from Them.
"What do you want me to do?"
Skadi asked.
Nakbet continued,
"After several attempts, we’ve found that the colder and more silent the environment, the less the ancient tree’s pull on the soul seems to be.
So, I hope you can create a realm of ice here, so that every soul that comes to the Netherworld first undergoes the baptism of the cold wind, to offset the ancient tree’s gravitational pull."
Listening to Nakbet’s words, Skadi nodded slightly.
This task wasn’t difficult for a Fourth Rank Divine who could freeze the Country of Divines with the Water God’s cooperation.
"But Nakbet, why should I help you?"
Skadi’s tone was cold,
"You want to be the Monarch of the Netherworld, what benefit is that to me?"
Skadi had a temperament somewhat similar to the hidden God Hiris, preferring solitude and aloofness, indifferent to matters unrelated to Themselves. The only difference from the hidden God Hiris was that Hiris wasn’t actually cold, but Skadi was an iceberg.
Nakbet was taken aback. Without much scheming, They hadn’t thought of a good reward yet.
"How about I give you control over the Netherworld’s realm of ice?"
The Death God asked tentatively.
Skadi scoffed,
"This Netherworld has yet to be built, existing only in your fantasy."
Nakbet thought so too and felt somewhat embarrassed, not knowing what to offer Skadi in return.
Asis slowly came up from the side, performed a courtesy to Skadi, and asked,
"Cold Winter God, what do you desire?"
The Death God Nakbet clapped Their hands; Asis’s words had reminded Them that, instead of racking Their brains, it was better to ask Skadi directly what They wanted.
Skadi didn’t give the human a proper glance.
In Their eyes, this human of unknown origin wasn’t qualified to converse with Them.
Therefore, Nakbet asked again:
"Skadi, is there anything you need from us?"
At this moment, Skadi slowly spoke:
"I need a person named Kars, a Beastman, he is a follower of Ajia’s Baird."
Nakbet nodded,
"What do you want him for?"
The Winter God Skadi said,
"I want him to follow me, to believe in me, to await my orders, to establish a kingdom in the far north."
