Chapter 254 - 219: Follow the Prophet or Follow God?
Chapter 254: Chapter 219: Follow the Prophet or Follow God?
Xilan closely watched the figure outside the rugged gate, deeply hidden in the rainy, dark night.
His hands clenched involuntarily as he silently prayed in his heart.
Daniel’s feet trod over the muddy and rain-soaked ground, taking him into the New Rule Garden as he walked.
This man, usually Xilan’s right-hand man, now wore a solemn and serious expression, his gaze alternating between Xilan and the three Holy Scriptures.
He felt restless, yet his face showed no emotion, for he could not afford to, fearing he could somehow affect Xilan.
Xilan stared intently at the space behind Daniel, where shadows lingered on beyond the gate, seemingly with ease and devoid of any panic.
Xilan’s hands rested on his knees as he looked at the gate, took a deep breath, and quietly waited.
Naya, drenched in rain, slowly walked into the New Rule Garden. His steps were unhurried, carrying specks of mud onto the stone bricks of the Patterned people.
He surveyed his surroundings and quickly, his gaze settled on the three Holy Scriptures and Xilan in front of the stone monument.
"Hermit Naya, is it?"
Xilan raised his head and inquired.
Naya did not answer the question but simply said,
"I’ve heard many of your sermons."
"Oh?"
"Those two Preachers who became my Disciples, no matter what, after tonight, I will set them free."
Before Xilan, Hermit Naya slowly sat down.
"What does this mean?"
It was not Xilan, but rather Daniel who looked puzzled.
Naya glanced at him and slowly said,
"The reason I speak thus is merely to have you accept this debate, in fact, no one will lose anything in this debate."
Daniel looked at Naya, puzzled,
"You could just do this tomorrow..."
Hermit Naya coldly replied,
"I am accustomed to being alone, yet not to the clamor of crowds.
Rather than the outcome of the debate, I am more interested in understanding you.
I want to know why your existence is capable of shaking the long-standing faith in Kagawus."
Saying this, he raised his head and surveyed the decorative patterns in the New Rule Garden,
"This place was originally Kagawus’s Temple."
Xilan spoke slowly,
"But it was abandoned long ago. It was our Prophet who came here and transformed this deserted Temple into God’s Rule Garden."
At this moment, Xilan was no longer nervous; knowing the Hermit’s intent relaxed him, adding an air of composure.
Still, Xilan focused all his attention, wholeheartedly throwing himself into the imminent debate.
The observing Daniel silently prayed, his palms sweaty.
The Hermit had stated his purpose, but this did not mean the debate was inconsequential.
On the contrary, according to Daniel’s past experience, this man called Naya would seek out flaws in his opponent’s arguments and deliver devastating responses from the most intricate angles, even making one unconsciously betray their faith.
The Hermit shifted his gaze, staring into Xilan’s eyes,
"You are an Elf; I have rarely seen Elves."
Xilan nodded slightly and the Hermit continued,
"You should have heard of my actions.
Then let me ask a question.
How do you know there really is a Heaven as an afterlife?"
The listening Daniel inhaled sharply, rain streaked outside the temple and thunder occasionally roared; he had not expected the Hermit to explore such a profound question initially.
"We have souls, don’t we?"
Xilan was composed; he had been well-prepared.
Seeing the Hermit nod slightly, Xilan continued,
"In this world, almost everyone must die,
yet we hardly ever see hordes of lost souls.
Therefore, there must be a gathering place for souls, and all souls proceed there.
And our God made a covenant with the Prophets, proclaiming it as the descending nation, the Heavenly City."
Xilan’s response was impeccable, even flawless.
Naya smiled, recognizing the man before him was unlike the greedy, extravagant Priests of the Great Temple.
"How then can you be sure it is beautiful enough?
Do you know every thought of your God? Do you represent your God?"
Naya unrelentingly sharpened his questions, like a lurking snake initially concealed in the rain, baring its venomous fangs.
"No one can represent God."
Xilan, staring at Naya, responded,
"We are not God."
Seeing this, the Hermit pressed on,
"Then how can you be sure it is beautiful enough?
According to you, God transcends reason, so how can you be sure that the afterlife He created is good for us?"
Naya’s pressing questions were like a relentless barrage of arrows attempting to crush Xilan’s spirit.
Xilan, gazing intensely, spoke to Naya word by word,
"Because my God created us.
In ancient times, my God saved mankind.
That means, even if God transcends our reason, the goodness He creates corresponds to the beauty we desire.
If it were not so, there would be no need for God to create us or save us."
The observing Daniel exhaled slightly, once again, Xilan, like a solid Battle Shield, had withstood Naya’s sharp questions.
But Daniel could not help but worry, Hermit Naya, although probing time and again, still seemed effortlessly skilled, it was as if the truly harmful sharpness had yet to be revealed, the winning question was still hidden.
