Chapter 296

Chapter 296: Chapter 296

Green light.

Start.

Song Guanchao twisted the throttle with his right hand and touched his thigh with his left.

The fabric of his dress pants was silky smooth, and due to his sitting posture, the pants clung to his thigh.

The soft tenderness of the young girl’s thigh was clearly transmitted to his palm.

He had ridden the motorcycle all the way, touching the thigh the entire time.

After they arrived at their destination, he withdrew his hand, parked the motorcycle on the roadside, and looked around.

They were some distance from the urban area, surrounded by bungalows and walled yards, with cars parked in every courtyard, used car dealerships in sight everywhere.

"Over there," Wu Yun pointed towards a shop on the right ahead.

Song Guanchao rode over and got off the bike.

Wu Yun walked into the shop and shouted at a man sleeping on the lounge chair in the living room, "Brother Shuang!"

The man opened his eyes groggily. Seeing Wu Yun, he said in surprise, "Xiao Yun, what brings you here?"

The man appeared to be in his late twenties, quite tall and lean, with dark skin. He wore beach shorts paired with a floral shirt, his arms covered in dragon and tiger tattoos.

He had thick eyebrows that made him look very jolly when he smiled.

"This is my neighbor, Yu Xiaoshuang."

Wu Yun gave a brief introduction, then said, "Brother Shuang, my friend came here to buy a car. Could you give him some recommendations?"

Friend?

Yu Xiaoshuang glanced over and said with a strange look in his eyes, "It couldn’t be that he’s my future brother-in-law, could it?"

Wu Yun’s cheeks flushed at once, and she stomped her foot, exclaiming, "What are you talking about!"

"Heh, just kidding."

Yu Xiaoshuang took out a cigarette and offered one, "Buddy, what price range are you looking at?"

Song Guanchao took the cigarette and said with a smile, "Around a hundred thousand is fine. I’m not particular about the brand, as long as it can drive and is durable."

"Not too demanding, let me see."

Yu Xiaoshuang held his arms and took a drag on his cigarette, before saying, "Come with me."

They stepped out of the shop, and Yu Xiaoshuang led them to the parking lot, pointing at a black sedan: "Toyota Camry, four years old, only thirty thousand kilometers on it. If you want it, you can take it for a hundred thousand, and all you owe me is another pack of cigarettes later."

Song Guanchao didn’t know much about cars, but he knew that for this condition of a vehicle, a hundred thousand was really a steal.

"Alright, I’ll take this one."

"Don’t you want to try it out?"

Yu Xiaoshuang was surprised. Though Wu Yun was the go-between, it was still a hundred thousand yuan purchase, and yet he agreed so readily.

"No need to try, Xiao Wu recommended it."

"I like the sound of that."

Yu Xiaoshuang patted the car door and said, "But you should still have a try. How about this, you drive it around to see if it feels right."

"Alright."

Once bought and paid for, if something went wrong, it wouldn’t be good to trouble the seller.

He guessed Yu Xiaoshuang was worried about this also, which was why he insisted on a test drive.

"You get in the car, Xiao Yun, come with me to get the keys."

"Okay."

Wu Yun followed him into the shop, and Yu Xiaoshuang asked, "Are you and this kid dating?"

"No way!" Wu Yun glared and said, "I’m warning you, don’t talk nonsense in front of my dad, or else I’ll tell your wife about your past!"

"Just asking."

Yu Xiaoshuang grinned, "If I knew you weren’t dating, I wouldn’t have sold him the car."

"What’s wrong with the car? Is there a problem?"

"There’s nothing wrong with it! It’s a US-import model! Genuine V6 3.5L engine. I wouldn’t sell it even for 180 thousand."

"Ah? That expensive?"

Wu Yun said, "Then why did you say a hundred thousand?"

"I thought you two were an item, was figuring it to be like an advance dowry for you."

"Oh no, what are you saying, we’re really not!"

Dating, dowry...

These words had Wu Yun stamping her feet in embarrassment.

Yu Xiaoshuang laughed heartily, "Alright, it’s just tens of thousands. I’m not short of that."

"Go, take a spin with him, try to win him over early."

Yu Xiaoshuang tossed her the car keys, leaning back on the chair, "Don’t say I never gave you a chance. Let him drive more; there’s a surprise in store."

Wu Yun was too embarrassed to listen to his last words, simply grabbing the keys and leaving.

She got in the car and handed the keys to Song Guanchao.

As the vehicle started, listening to the deep and stable engine sound, Song Guanchao hissed.

"What’s wrong?"

"There’s something off about this car."

Song Guanchao was a jack-of-all-trades in the army, skilled with all sorts of specialized vehicles.

He could tell the condition of a civilian car like this after a brief try.

Although he had never driven a Camry, he had heard about this globally popular model.

This car was known for its durability and fuel efficiency, albeit with average power, but it was sufficient for family use.

However, the engine sound of the car below him didn’t seem at all like an ordinary family car.

Without giving it much thought, he shifted into gear and gently pressed the accelerator.

Instantly, the car shot out, the throttle response quick in a way that didn’t seem to fit a car in this price range.

The car drove out of the parking lot, connecting immediately to the expressway.

On the expressway, he drove with the accelerator pressed down, watching as the speed surpassed 100; the power kept on delivering, response immediate with each press.

Song Guanchao was astonished. Was this a Camry?

This power, it wasn’t any worse than the Mercedes Sister Lin had loaned him.

And the handling of the car was even better, more responsive to his touch.

They exited the expressway, and nearby was Lingjiang.

Wu Yun looked out at the Lingjiang River; the weather turned overcast, yet the river still sparkled.

"Song Guanchao, shall we go for a walk by the river?"

"Sure."

With a turn of the steering wheel, they took to Lake Ring Road.

They sped along Lake Ring Road, quickly reaching a point where there were no more cars or people.

They had completely left the city area.

"Huh?"

The dashboard suddenly started to signal an alarm.

Glancing down, Song Guanchao cursed under his breath; they were running out of gas.

"What’s wrong?"

"Out of gas," Song Guanchao said, annoyed; there were no gas stations nearby.

And the gas gauge was nearing empty, they wouldn’t last another two kilometers.

"Out of gas?"

Wu Yun suddenly thought of what Yu Xiaoshuang had said.

The surprise he prepared for himself... was this it?

Wu Yun’s face flushed red. What kind of surprise was this!

But, it seemed truly surprising.

Desolate wilderness, a car without gas, just the two of them alone...

Wu Yun’s heartbeat began to speed up.

Meanwhile, Song Guanchao was planning to make a U-turn ahead.

"I’ll call Brother Shuang and ask him to bring some gas over."

Song Guanchao contemplated saying they shouldn’t bother others, but then he remembered the car was sold to them at a bargain, so he didn’t mind asking for one more favor.

He hmm’d in agreement and continued driving.

He kept driving until they were under a railway bridge, parked the car on the flood dike, and turned off the engine.

"Brother Shuang will be here soon."

Song Guanchao asked, "Shall we go down for a walk?"

"Sure!"

Wu Yun placed her purse in the car and followed him down the slope, walking along the shore.

A breeze blew into their faces, lifting her hair.

She looked down, kicking pebbles as she made awkward chat with Song Guanchao.

"It’s starting to rain." Wu Yun looked up, and the raindrops dribbled onto her face, slowly spreading.

In a matter of seconds, the drizzle turned into a downpour, catching them both off guard.

Song Guanchao grabbed her wrist, running towards a bridge pylon.

Taking shelter under the pylon, they were already soaked through, Wu Yun’s shirt clinging to her, the outline and color of her undergarments clearly visible through the wet fabric.

"This rain came out of nowhere," Song Guanchao complained, then said, "I’ll take you home afterwards."

"Okay." Wu Yun looked at her soaked clothes, eyes glistening like black gems, and then she suddenly hugged her arms, softly saying, "Song Guanchao, I’m cold."
