Official Career Storm -
Chapter 255
Chapter 255: Chapter 255
The following day.
At nine in the morning.
Song Guanchao had changed into sportswear and was wearing a face mask and a baseball cap.
When he arrived at the parking lot, he saw a group of about twenty people standing neatly in four rows.
These men were all over six feet tall, sporting crew cuts, dressed in TRU tactical pants, TAD shark skin softshell jackets, Oakley combat boots, ROTHCO baseball caps, dark sunglasses, and were wearing miniature high-definition earpieces around their collars.
Their hands were clasped behind their backs, standing tall and straight, their attire was as professional as it gets, at first glance, one might think they were international mercenaries.
Liu Lanzi also stood at about five foot seven, but she looked fragile in front of them.
"There might be unexpected situations on the road later, everyone be prepared."
Liu Lanzi didn’t bother with pleasantries, just gave a few instructions before telling them to get in the vehicles.
Song Guanchao approached and said, "Chairman Liu’s security team is very professional."
"Real estate naturally involves disputes, it wouldn’t work without professionalism."
Liu Lanzi replied, "Secretary Song..."
"Chairman Liu, just call me Xiao Song when we’re outside." Song Guanchao pointed to the mask on his face, "To outsiders, just say I’m your personal bodyguard."
Liu Lanzi caught on, "Let’s get in the car."
Twenty security guards rode in four Toyota Sequoias, while Liu Lanzi’s regular ride was a Bentley Continental, for business trips she traveled in a Toyota Alphard.
Ning Lin took the co-driver’s seat, with Song Guanchao and Liu Lanzi in the back seat.
The Dujiang County’s Tender Center was located in the old government building, roughly six or seven kilometers away from the guest house, not too far.
Because of the two incidents from last night and the night before, the security team was on high alert during the entire route, fearing any unexpected events along the way.
The motorcade traveled at a steady speed of 50 miles per hour, and when they were about one kilometer away from the Tender Center, the line of cars suddenly stopped.
A walkie-talkie in Ning Lin’s hand buzzed with the voice of the security team leader, Shi Yong.
"Assistant Ning, something has happened."
The business vehicle was in the middle of the motorcade, so Ning Lin couldn’t see the situation ahead.
Shi Yong spoke gravely, "A group of elderly people suddenly appeared and threw themselves onto the vehicles."
As soon as his voice fell, Ning Lin saw six or seven old men and women rush toward the business car she was in, one of them slamming against the co-driver’s window, startling her.
These elderly men and women blocked the way forward for the motorcade.
Ning Lin turned her head, "Chairman Liu..."
Liu Lanzi’s expression was dark, she knew this must be people hired by the local developers.
They were using this tactic to stop them from attending the tender.
"Leave a few to handle this, the rest come with me, we’ll walk the rest of the way!"
Ning Lin issued the instructions through the walkie-talkie straight away, then got out and opened the door.
The group of security guards gathered around, with Liu Lanzi’s face as grim as the deep water; though she was a delicate and seemingly fragile woman, at this moment, she appeared to possess an unstoppable martial spirit.
Song Guanchao walked alongside her, his eyes sweeping around like radar, identifying any potential dangers.
The security guards behind them each rested their hands on the batons at their waists, all highly strung.
All of the New City Company’s security personnel were ex-military with exceptional quality.
But even with high quality, many years had passed since retirement, and they were not as capable as they once were.
Moreover, during their military service, it was nothing but monotonous training.
A situation like today’s they had seldom encountered.
Minutes later, the Tender Center was in sight.
But Liu Lanzi was not the least bit relieved, instead, she felt a chill in her heart.
Because outside the entrance of the Tender Center, there was a huge crowd of people, blocking the doorway so tightly that it was completely impassable.
"Chairman Liu, I’ll go ahead and see what’s happening."
Shi Yong went to check the situation, while the others stayed put.
Shi Yong returned a while later, his expression grim as he reported the situation.
A gang of local thugs was blocking the entrance. Just like New City Company, the developers who had come to bid were all stopped at the door, unable to get in.
Anyone who dared take a step forward was met with blades drawn by these ruffians.
The brightly shining blades, glittering with a cold light, filled the crowd of developers with both shock and rage.
Liu Lanzi’s eyes flickered with fury.
Without asking, it was clear—this was definitely the doing of local developers.
To stop outside developers from bidding, it was everything from orchestrating car accidents to arranging for hoodlums with knives to block the gates. Their brazenness was beyond description.
Deep down, Liu Lanzi felt a sense of despair and could not help but glance at Song Guanchao, with a self-mocking smile, she said, "In Dujiang County, is there any law at all?"
Song Guanchao’s face was equally ugly.
He knew about the collusion between officials and businessmen in Dujiang County and some leaders’ desire to make a quick buck in the process of upgrading the county to a city.
But he had always believed that no matter what, the other side wouldn’t allow things to get this ugly in public.
However, he had clearly underestimated the bottom line and political savvy of this group.
People from small places, lacking legal knowledge and backed by powerful patrons, had become utterly unbridled.
Just then, a black Mercedes-Benz V-Class pulled up directly in front of the bidding center’s entrance.
As soon as the car stopped, the gang of thugs rushed it with sticks and knives, smashing violently.
After a cacophony of crashes, as the crowd dispersed, the V-Class was left in a wretched state.
All the windows were shattered, the bonnet dented, and the tires punctured.
The driver, trembling in fear, drove off straight away on the deflated tires.
No sooner had this car left, than another Mercedes-Benz, an S400, came by.
As soon as the car stopped, a few large, tattooed men rushed over, violence incarnate as they yanked open the door and dragged out a big boss from the back seat, dragging him to the side of a sports car.
From inside the sports car, a man’s hand appeared through the window, holding a cigarette, occasionally pointing at the big boss.
The big boss stood by the sports car, bowing and scraping.
A few minutes later, the boss went back to his car, defeated, and sped away.
This whole scene was witnessed by Liu Lanzi and Song Guanchao.
Song Guanchao stared at the sports car, memorizing the license plate number.
The person inside must be the local developer who was obstructing this bid.
Song Guanchao turned around and said to the chief of security, "Shuai Gun."
Shi Yong frowned; he had noticed Song Guanchao earlier.
This man was a new face, and though his countenance was concealed, it was clear he was young.
From his inexpensive sportswear, it was evident he wasn’t a relative of Chairman Liu, but seemed more like a close bodyguard.
As the head of the security team, Shi Yong was baffled as to when Chairman Liu had hired this bodyguard, and this gave him an inexplicable hostility toward Song Guanchao.
He pulled out the telescopic baton and threw it without a word.
Song Guanchao caught it and looked sideways, "Chairman Liu, let’s go."
Liu Lanzi took a deep breath, nodded, and followed him toward the doors of the bidding center.
Shi Yong’s heart skipped a beat. He wanted to stop them.
Outside, there were at least a hundred of those local thugs, and they had fewer than twenty people.
If they let loose and fought, each of them could take down four or five.
But the other side had knives, and they also had to protect Liu Lanzi and Ning Lin.
Once a fight broke out, every single one of them would end up in the hospital.
Shi Yong clenched his teeth but in the end, he kept quiet and silently followed, inwardly cursing Song Guanchao to death.
In his view, this guy just wanted to show off in front of Chairman Liu.
But damn it, if you want to show off, don’t drag us into this!
This idiotic bastard, hopefully, he’ll be the first one they chop down!
