Chapter 176
Chapter 176: Chapter 176
"Yes, I’ve recorded it," Guan Chao shook the memory card in his hand.
The police officer’s attitude softened slightly as he asked, "Why would they smash your camera for no good reason?"
Guan Chao replied, "We’re investigating the roadside parking spaces."
"Roadside parking spaces?" The officer was puzzled. "What’s there to investigate?"
Guan Chao said, "The roads belong to the government, but according to our investigation, payments for roadside parking spaces go to a private company. We want to know by what right this company is collecting money."
The police officer’s brow furrowed slightly and he said, "Give me the memory card."
Guan Chao handed it over.
"Wait here for a moment."
The officer took the memory card and went inside.
Once out of sight, he dialed a number: "Mr. Yang, there are journalists investigating your company."
Mr. Yang replied, "What’s there to investigate?"
"They say that the roadside parking spaces belong to the government and that your company is private and has no right to collect money. Also, during their investigation today, someone from your company came and smashed their camera, and now they’ve called the police."
"That happened? Where is the journalist now?"
"At the station."
"Alright, have them wait. I’m heading over now."
"Mr. Yang, the process of your people smashing the camera was captured by them, but I have the memory card."
"Thanks, I’ll buy you a drink later."
"Don’t mention it, Mr. Yang, it’s only right."
After hanging up, he returned to the lobby and said, "Please take a seat, someone will be looking for you shortly."
Zhou Qian asked, "You got in touch with them?"
The officer glanced at her, clearly impatient, but he still answered, "Yes, I got in touch."
Zhou Qian looked at Guan Chao, who nodded, "Let’s sit for a while."
After about twenty minutes, a black BMW pulled into the yard.
A sturdy man in his thirties stepped out of the car.
With his crew cut, tattoo, black skinny jeans, tight floral T-shirt, and a cigarette dangling from his lips, he was the epitome of a stereotypical street tough.
The man entered the reception hall and the officer greeted him with a smile, "Mr. Yang."
Mr. Yang nodded at him, and the officer pointed at the three people sitting in chairs, "These are the ones."
Mr. Yang walked over, his gaze quickly drawn to the young girl.
She was about twenty-two or twenty-three, in the prime of her youth, standing about 1.6 meters tall with an innocent and pretty appearance, instantly catching Mr. Yang’s attention.
Zhou Qian’s face was obscured by a mask and a hat, but her jeans and white T-shirt still showcased an eye-catching figure.
"Let’s clear things up," Mr. Yang began genially. "It’s all a misunderstanding."
The young girl didn’t like the way he looked at her and showed a disgusted expression.
Zhou Qian kept silent.
Guan Chao also answered with a grin, "Were the people who smashed the camera from Mr. Yang’s company?"
Mr. Yang glanced at him, took up his cigarette, flicked the ash, and replied, "Little brother, let me correct you, it wasn’t smashed, it was accidentally bumped."
Guan Chao stated, "We have the video."
"Oh? You have a video? Where is it? Let me see."
Guan Chao turned, "Officer, could you please give me the memory card?"
The officer said, "I just checked the memory card and there’s nothing on it."
The young girl started, then quickly realized, "You’re in this together!"
Zhou Qian and Guan Chao, however, seemed rather calm, as if they had anticipated this.
The officer’s expression turned stern, "You can eat anything, but you can’t talk nonsense! If the memory card is empty, then it’s empty!"
Mr. Yang looked at the three with an easygoing and confident demeanor.
Guan Chao remarked, "Mr. Yang is quite resourceful, very impressive."
Mr. Yang chuckled, "Alright, enough of that. The camera is broken, right? I’ll reimburse you for it."
Guan Chao feigned a scared look, "No need for that, really."
Then he took Zhou Qian by the hand and the young girl with the other, and they headed outside.
Watching the trio’s panicked retreat, Mr. Yang scoffed.
He offered the officer a cigarette and said, "We’ll eat together later. I’m going to follow up and get a feel for this young man."
"Mr. Yang, do your thing," the officer said with a chuckling smile.
Mr. Yang came out of the station and saw the three people get into a car and drive away.
He walked slowly to his own car and followed them.
In the car, Zhou Qian asked, "Secretary Song, where are we going now?"
Song Guanchao glanced at the rearview mirror and said, "Head to the suburbs, and speed up a bit."
Twenty minutes later, the car left the urban area and entered the suburbs.
Fewer and fewer pedestrians were around, fewer cars, and vast fields and houses came into view.
"Stop the car at the edge of the village."
Zhou Qian stepped on the brakes and stopped near a village.
This area had concrete roads, the nearest house was several hundred meters away, and there was no surveillance to be seen by the roadside.
Song Guanchao pushed the door open and got out, gazing at the BMW following close behind.
Mr. Yang had realized that he had been spotted following them as soon as they left the city.
He was quite surprised to see that they had stopped voluntarily.
He floored the gas pedal, and the car rushed forward with no intention of stopping.
With that speed, if there really were a collision, not even several of Guan Chao’s lives would suffice.
"Brake!"
A piercing sound of brakes screeched, and the car stopped with its front bumper less than half a meter from Guan Chao’s legs.
"That’s some courage."
Mr. Yang was surprised.
He pushed open the door, took a pack of Zhongnanhai cigarettes out of his pocket, pulled one out, clamped it in his lips, and reached for a diesel lighter with his right hand.
Click.
A flame rose, lighting the tip of the cigarette.
Suddenly.
"Bang!"
Song Guanchao unexpectedly kicked Mr. Yang’s knee.
Mr. Yang’s lower leg bent, and before he could react, he was already on his knees, belatedly experiencing the pain.
"You..."
"Slap!"
A few hard slaps silenced his words and shoved them back into his mouth.
Mr. Yang’s senses were muddled from the slaps, and the recently lit cigarette fell to the ground.
Zhou Qian and the young girl had just gotten out of the car when they saw the scene.
The girl was startled and covered her mouth.
Zhou Qian’s eyes sparkled with excitement.
So cool, so awesome!
Song Guanchao squatted down, fished the cigarette out of Mr. Yang’s chest pocket, lit it with his lighter, and blew a puff of smoke onto his swollen face.
"Why is Mr. Yang following me?"
Mr. Yang’s senses gradually returned, and he said angrily, "You dare hit me!"
"Slap!"
Song Guanchao slapped him again and said, "I ask, you answer. Blabber one extra word, and you get a slap."
"You..."
Mr. Yang obviously hadn’t grasped the power dynamics and, as he opened his mouth, received another slap.
"Slap!"
Several more slaps followed, and he didn’t dare to speak again.
It was simply too painful.
He felt like crying.
"Speak, why are you following me?"
"I wasn’t..."
"Mr. Yang, you’re not being honest," Song Guanchao pressed the half-smoked cigarette against his face to stamp it out.
Mr. Yang screamed in agony, turning his head to dodge.
"Still daring to dodge?" Song Guanchao glared and landed another slap.
Mr. Yang was furious, gritting his teeth and said, "You fucking dare to hit me, do you know who I am?"
"Tsk, trying to act tough with me, Mr. Yang? So defiant! I appreciate people like you who have guts."
He took out his phone: "Hello, Madman, bring the stuff and come over."
