Chapter 106
Chapter 106: Chapter 106
Xu Jialin’s face was covered in bruises, and her eyes were bloodshot, but they were mostly superficial wounds.
After a brief introduction by Zhang Bin, Song Guanchao asked directly, "Why withdraw the case?"
Xu Jialin hemmed and hawed, while Zhang Bin’s gaze flitted about evasively.
"This group is suspected of serious crimes; I hope you can answer honestly. If you hide anything, I will have no choice but to take you back to the station," Song Guanchao said sternly.
Hearing this, the young couple became frightened.
Zhang Bin said, "Manager Wang told us to settle."
"Manager Wang said the group gave us a sum of money to drop the charges."
"How much?"
"Twenty thousand yuan."
"Did you receive it?"
"We did."
"Okay, thank you."
Song Guanchao left.
Back at the KTV, Captain Hu had already retrieved the surveillance footage.
Song Guanchao briefly explained the situation to him. Captain Hu nodded slightly and turned to the lobby manager, "Are you Manager Wang?"
"Yes, that’s me."
"Did the people who were involved in the assault settle with Xu Jialin?"
"Yes."
"Who did they settle with?"
"Our Mr. Zhu."
"Is Mr. Zhu in the club?"
"He’s here."
Clearly, Manager Wang was just a messenger. To get the details, they needed to meet with Mr. Zhu directly.
They went into the office and met Mr. Zhu.
After they made their purpose known, Mr. Zhu suddenly became flustered.
Captain Hu asked, "Why settle?"
Mr. Zhu stuttered, "They didn’t want to blow things up, and they... they offered money..."
Captain Hu could tell at a glance he was lying.
Interrupting him, he said, "I’m investigating a serious case. The five who made trouble that day might be criminals. Now, tell me the whole story with nothing left out. If this case is obstructed because of you, consider whether you can bear the responsibility!"
Frightened, Mr. Zhu blurted out, "I will, I’ll tell."
"That night after they beat someone, they fled. The next morning, a man burst into my office and told me to make Xu Jialin withdraw her case, or else..."
"Or else what?"
"Or else he would kill me."
"A single threat scared you?"
"No." Mr. Zhu shook his head, then said something that startled both men, "He had a gun!"
Captain Hu suppressed his excitement and asked, "Are you sure?"
"Certain!"
"He showed the gun!"
Captain Hu said, "Which day? What time? Pull up the surveillance!"
Ten minutes later, as Captain Hu studied the masked man in the surveillance footage, his brow furrowed in frustration.
"Damn it!" He smacked the table hard in anger.
Song Guanchao sat aside, calmly smoking.
He had anticipated this scenario.
If these people thought to come the next day and make Xu Jialin withdraw her case, it showed they were meticulous.
How could a person so meticulous not come prepared?
"Captain Hu, let’s go."
"Hmm."
Although Captain Hu was frustrated, there was nothing they could do.
As they drove away from the KTV, Captain Hu asked, "Where do you live? I’ll drop you off."
"Take me to the station; I have to talk with Director Liang."
On the way, Captain Hu asked, "How did you think of this approach?"
Song Guanchao replied, "He who carries a weapon has murder in his heart. The very person who went after the gun is likely to have a criminal record. And the reason for stealing the gun is also very likely to be planning a big case."
"During this period, he might have committed crimes, so the simplest and also the dullest way is to check the police records from that time."
Captain Hu nodded subconsciously; this line of thinking was correct.
Yet none of them had considered this angle.
Based on their experience, the culprit would definitely lay low and behave himself for a while after stealing the guns.
But Song Guanchao believed that this person might be planning a major crime.
Following this line of thought, he really did manage to find a lead.
Captain Hu then asked, "What about the Jindu Club situation?"
Song Guanchao replied, "I had a friend gather information to see if anything had happened recently in the underworld."
Captain Hu had an epiphany.
He couldn’t help but give Song Guanchao a couple of extra looks, showing a tinge of regret as if he lamented that Song Guanchao hadn’t chosen the path of a police officer.
On his way to the city police department, Song Guanchao received a call from Liang Hao.
He had already eaten with Chu Xiao’e and sent her home.
After talking for a few sentences, they ended the call.
Around ten o’clock at night, they arrived at the city police department.
In the meeting room, he saw Liang Jiajia.
The special case team consisted of eleven people, all of whom were elites drawn from various departments.
"Director Liang," Song Guanchao greeted him with a handshake.
Captain Hu declared, "Mr. Liang, there have been breakthrough developments in the case!"
"Let’s hear it."
Captain Hu then detailed the evening’s events carefully.
After listening, everyone heaved a sigh of relief as if a heavy weight had been lifted.
Finally, there was progress!
Although the suspect wore a mask and a hat, at least they had found a clue.
Captain Hu didn’t mention that it was Song Guanchao’s contribution, which was also at Song Guanchao’s request.
He wanted to downplay his own role in this process as much as possible.
However, as someone who had been through the experience, Director Liang naturally knew that the credit belonged to Song Guanchao.
When Xiao Chenggong recommended Song Guanchao to him, he didn’t have much hope.
Yet to his surprise, in just a few short days, Song Guanchao really did find the person.
And the approach to cracking the case was so unique.
Director Liang immediately made deployments, focusing mainly on the KTVs and pulling all the surrounding surveillance to try to find traces of the culprit.
This all had to be done secretly, to avoid alerting the quarry.
After deploying, Director Liang asked everyone else to leave, keeping only Song Guanchao and Captain Hu.
"Jiajia, you go out first," Director Liang said, noticing that Liang Jiajia was still there.
"I want to stay."
Director Liang’s expression turned stern, "Get out!"
Liang Jiajia pointed at Song Guanchao, "Why can he be here?"
"Don’t make a scene!" Director Liang reprimanded, "Out!"
Captain Hu also said, "Jiajia, don’t make trouble, we’re going to discuss business, you leave first."
Without a word, Liang Jiajia grabbed her notebook and left.
After she left, Director Liang offered an apologetic smile, "Sorry, Secretary Song."
Song Guanchao shook his head and went straight to the point, "After comparing the surveillance of the bars and KTVs, we can confirm that they are the same group of people."
"So you’re saying, they are drug addicts."
"This time they directly robbed about fifty thousand’s worth of contraband, so they probably won’t show up again in the short term."
"But once they finish their stash, they will certainly try to get more."
Song Guanchao lit a cigarette, inhaling as he said, "But since they’ve robbed once, they likely won’t use the same method again. So, I’m guessing that their next step will probably be to get some money."
The two men nodded slightly, agreeing with his line of thinking.
After voicing his opinions, Song Guanchao asked, "The people following Captain Hu, were they Brother Dao’s men?"
Director Liang shook his head, "Public Security Brigade’s."
Song Guanchao acted very surprised and, seeing that Director Liang was reluctant to say more, he tactfully didn’t press further.
"It’s getting late, Mr. Liang, Captain Hu, I’ll head back now."
"Let me walk you out."
"No need, I’ll go by myself."
Song Guanchao left with a smile.
When he came out of the office, he ran into a stern-faced Liang Jiajia.
Song Guanchao pointed outside, "I’ll wait for you out there."
