Chapter 35: Chapter 35 Crime Game Organization (Please follow!)_1

"Lawrence, you’ve come so early. Have you brought me some good news?"

Dean winced as he sat up.

With a guilty expression, Lawrence said, "Buddy, we’ve locked down Kaz’s real identity, but as for the credit, well..."

"Sorry, Detective Lawrence, I’m short on time. Can you leave now?" the man behind Lawrence interrupted.

"F**k you," Lawrence, clearly annoyed, flipped the man the middle finger before turning to Dean. "Buddy, call me if you need anything; I’ll be right outside!"

After saying his piece, he walked out of the room with a sullen expression.

This was a clear signal. This sulky man in sunglasses and a suit, here so early in the morning, had to be from a department with more clout than the Robbery and Homicide Division. Otherwise, Lawrence, with his explosive temper, wouldn’t have backed down so easily.

The man in sunglasses waited until Lawrence had closed the door before approaching the hospital bed, looking down at Dean. "Hello, Detective Dean. My name is Cheston En, FBI agent. May we talk?"

"Not convenient!" Dean’s injured right hand, taking a page from Lawrence’s book, also gave him a defiant middle finger.

Cheston En said, "...Detective Dean, I mean no harm."

"My partner doesn’t like you. And even though I don’t know why, Lawrence is a man who knows who to love and who to hate. That means I probably won’t like you either," Dean said lightly.

Considering what Lawrence hadn’t finished saying, it was obvious: the FBI was here to steal the credit! This was about my Experience Points! If the Experience Points for solving the case were distributed based on effort, or by department, wouldn’t I be screwed? This directly affected my bottom line. Naturally, I wasn’t going to be pleasant to this Cheston En. Besides, the FBI couldn’t really touch me. To put it bluntly, within the Fourth Squad’s jurisdiction, I could even pick a fight, get into a shootout with these FBI guys, and then arrest *them*. That was the beauty of having this badge.

Seeing Dean’s uncooperative attitude, Cheston En sighed, took off his sunglasses, sat down, and looked Dean in the eye. "Okay, due to our involvement, we’ll be taking some of your credit, which is why your partner is pissed at us. But we’re not enemies. In fact, if it weren’t for the intervention of our computer specialists, Kaz would’ve been long gone by now. His identity is exposed, and he’s on the wanted list. This is a win-win situation."

"So, what do you want from me?" Dean asked, moving his limbs slightly. "I’m laid up and can’t help you right now."

"Two things!" Cheston En held up two fingers. "First, we hope you can recount, in detail, the entire process of how you discovered Bill’s identity. Second, we’re impressed with your talent and would like to formally invite you to join the FBI!"

"Join the FBI?" Dean became interested. "What’s in it for me if I join?"

The FBI, or Federal Bureau of Investigation, is the primary investigative arm of the United States Department of Justice. Its purview covers specific crimes across the entire nation, including but not limited to major offenses, interstate crimes, and serial crimes. The FBI also has dedicated intelligence departments and training facilities. Its authority is extensive, if somewhat vaguely defined, allowing it to mobilize vast resources and operate with considerable freedom when handling cases.

Seeing Dean’s interest, Cheston En, however, adopted a more official tone. "This is merely our preliminary interest. You’ll need to undergo our assessment. Only if you pass will we inform you of the specific rights and obligations. For now, let’s discuss the serial home invasion and stabbing case. This will also be an opportunity for you to demonstrate your value. After all, you’re only a third-generation immigrant and have partial Chinese ancestry. This naturally makes us harbor some doubts about your capabilities and your loyalty to the United States."

Dean was taken aback, a hint of amusement crossing his face. "Agent Cheston En, you’re the one asking for my help, not the other way around. Also, are you discriminating against me? With that attitude, you can get the hell out!"

"What?" Cheston En thought he must have misheard.

"Get lost!"

Dean glared at Cheston En and closed his eyes.

If I weren’t injured right now... Just for the discrimination in Cheston En’s words, I’d make sure he was carried out of here horizontally!

Seeing Dean close his eyes and ignore him, a vein throbbed on Cheston En’s temple. His fists clenched, but then he seemed to remember something and let out a frustrated sigh. "Your Captain Monet ordered you to cooperate with us!"

"Lawrence, buddy, could you help me kick this whining piglet out?" Dean called directly to Lawrence, who was standing guard outside the door.

BANG.

Lawrence pushed the door open and entered without giving Cheston En a chance to utter another word. He grabbed him by his suit tie and, half-dragging, half-pushing, ejected him from the hospital room.

"F**k! I’m with the FBI..."

"OW..."

Cheston En’s agonized screams and the voices of medical staff trying to intervene drifted in from outside.

「A moment later.」

Lawrence returned to the room, a contented expression on his face. "Wow, Dean, beating up that arrogant guy felt amazing. You really should have joined in."

"Haha, did you let him taste your Texas Iron Fist?" Dean was very satisfied that Lawrence hadn’t hesitated to stand up for him.

Now that’s a partner I can trust!

Lawrence, still savoring the moment, rubbed his right hand. "Yes, and I added a few Texas-sized smacks. I think he’ll remember those for quite some time."

"Alright, Lawrence, why did the FBI suddenly seek me out?" Dean knew this wasn’t over and pressed for information.

Lawrence sighed. "It seems to involve a ’player organization’ that’s widespread across the entire United States. Currently, only Captain Monet knows the full details. In fact, he was the one who called in the FBI."

"Player organization?"

Dean remembered the "game" Bill had mentioned on the phone.

Lawrence nodded. "I don’t know much, only that this player organization communicates through the Dark Web, has a strict organizational structure, and is a criminal syndicate that’s been active for many years."

As they were talking, the phone under Dean’s pillow started ringing.

The call was from an unknown number.

Lawrence helped press the answer button and switched on the speaker.

It turned out to be Captain Monet. "Dean, I’m sorry to disturb you while you’re recovering, but this matter concerns the safety of you and your family. If possible, I hope you can cooperate with the FBI agent’s inquiries."

"Alright, Captain."

Lawrence had already gotten a measure of satisfaction for him, so Dean didn’t continue to resist.

After a pause on the other end of the line, a different, raspy voice spoke. "Detective Dean, hello. I’m FBI Agent Anthony. I’m very sorry that my colleague disturbed your rest."

Anthony was much more polite than Cheston En had been.

Dean appreciated politeness. He also didn’t want to genuinely antagonize the FBI and create unnecessary trouble for himself. So, he subtly threw Cheston En under the bus, saying, "Actually, I don’t dislike the FBI, but your partner... he seemed a bit prejudiced against me for being Asian."

Some of those old white guys are obsessed with blood purity—the ’one-drop’ rule sort of thing. And it just so happens that people like that hold most of the top positions in this federal nation.

"I will have Cheston En apologize to you, Detective Dean. Can we talk about the case now?" Anthony’s raspy voice carried a tone of goodwill.

"Yes, but I want to know about Bill and the organization Kaz belongs to!" A cold light flashed in Dean’s eyes.

Turning crime into a game... An organization like that... Since I’ve unintentionally crossed them, running away is pointless! In that case, I’ll get involved. I’ll hunt them down and wipe them out completely!
