Chapter 139: "Where Did These Quincy Come From?"
Chapter 139 - "Where Did These Quincy Come From?"
In a fabricated future, how do you kill someone like yourself?
That was the question Higashi Shuuichi found himself pondering the most after being appointed as the Captain of the 11th Division in this illusory version of Soul Society.
This was a power beyond his understanding, a kind of manipulation unlike anything he'd encountered before—no past battle, no textbook, no scroll of Kido or Zanpakutō lore could prepare him for it.
Fortunately, the arrogant persona he'd constructed upon arrival gave him plenty of leeway—justified his emotional detachment, allowed him to treat everyone with suspicion. A convenient façade.
And it seemed Akitsuki didn't plan to keep him waiting.
Just three days after his appointment, three uninvited guests slipped into Seireitei like phantoms—no alarms, no ripples, nothing—and all with one target in mind:
Higashi Shuuichi.
Inside the 11th Division barracks, in the captain's lounge, Shuuichi calmly eyed the three white-caped figures now standing before him.
"You chose me as your first target?" he asked, genuinely surprised.
Not by their presence—they were clearly Quincy—but that they came for him first.
Logically, with Yamamoto Genryūsai already dead in this timeline, the obvious target should've been the current Captain-Commander, Kyōraku Shunsui.
And yet, here they stood. Right in front of him.
Which meant only one thing: whoever orchestrated this fabricated future was aware of his true identity.
Akitsuki, he thought bitterly. You didn't give yourself the face of Haschwalth, did you? Please tell me you didn't go full Yhwach.
From the trio, a tall man with middle-parted black hair, a face mask lined with spikes, and eyes hidden behind jet-black lenses stepped forward.
"You seem to know quite a lot about us."
Shuuichi stood and smiled faintly. "More than you'd like. You three emerged from the shadows of Seireitei itself—Quincy, of course. Members of the Wandenreich, under the Sternritter banner."
All three faltered.
"I know your names," Shuuichi continued, raising a hand to count them off. "You, the tall one—Äs Nödt. Sternritter 'F'. That young man to your left is Cang Du, 'I'. And the slab of iron on your right... Bazz-B's friend, right? No, wait—BG9's dead, so you must be Bernice J. Quinn, 'K', the mechanical freak."
"...Who are you?!"
All arrogance drained from Äs Nödt's voice, replaced by palpable fear. The type that comes when your entire game has been read by the opponent before it even starts.
"Who I am doesn't matter," Shuuichi said with a smirk. "What matters is that you're not leaving. As the new 11th Division Captain, it's only polite to entertain guests."
He vanished.
In a flash step too quick to track, he appeared before Äs Nödt and—Fuzan.
One stroke. One kill.
Äs Nödt was cleaved down mid-thought, erased before he could even draw on his Schrift.
At that moment, Shuuichi's spiritual pressure bloomed through all of Seireitei like a roaring storm.
Inside Squad One's barracks, Lieutenant Ise Nanao adjusted her glasses with a concerned frown.
"Captain-Commander, what is Higashi-taichō doing?"
Kyōraku Shunsui looked up, his eyes narrowing. Even he couldn't explain it.
He had trusted Shuuichi's intentions—if only because the man had shown restraint during the previous incident with Ikkaku and Hitsugaya. But now?
Unleashing full spiritual pressure in the middle of Seireitei was not a simple breach of protocol. It was provocation.
However, someone reacted faster than Shunsui: Shihōin Yoruichi, the reinstated Captain of Squad Two.
By the time Yoruichi arrived, she found Shuuichi in mid-battle against the other two Sternritter. Her brows furrowed in disbelief.
Quincy—here? Inside Seireitei?
And more alarmingly, how had they gotten in?
"Hien Kyaku!"
"Gatling!"
Cang Du and Bernice J. Quinn had completely abandoned subtlety. They'd been instructed to make it quick—but this opponent was unlike anything they expected.
He didn't even draw his Zanpakutō's Shikai. He wasn't using Bankai.
He was using nothing but Zanjutsu and Kido—yet they couldn't land a blow.
Their medallions, designed to steal Bankai, were utterly useless.
Now they were forced into Vollständig—Quincy's final form—just to keep up.
But even that wasn't enough.
Rifuzan.
The second form of Shuuichi's signature technique—compressing both reiryoku and reishi into a space-warping strike. Less about brute force, more about inevitability.
Shuuichi's blade carved through space like a collapsing singularity.
Though Cang Du and Quinn dodged the trajectory, they realized too late—they weren't moving.
Not just physical stasis... Cang Du sweated. Even my reishi is being drawn in.
The fissure was like a gravitational well.
Shuuichi took one step, raised his blade overhead—
"Kage no Ryōiki."
Quinn infused reishi into their shared shadows, triggering teleportation.
But Shuuichi's cut wasn't just spatial—it pulled on spiritual mass.
Too late.
Cang Du screamed. Blood sprayed. His right arm dropped to the ground.
Yoruichi, observing from above, stopped her subordinates from intervening.
That strike—it reminded her of Yamamoto Genryūsai's execution style.
The ruthless efficiency. The swift decapitation.
She had resented the old man once.
But now, seeing his ghost in this man's movements... it stunned her.
Still, it was time to step in.
Shuuichi turned his attention to Quinn. Though the Sternritter could see every attack coming, his body couldn't keep up.
Soon, Quinn's left leg was severed. Collapse was inevitable.
"Bakudō #81: Dankū!"
Yoruichi conjured a transparent barrier—not to defend Shuuichi, but to protect the two Quincy.
"What is the meaning of this, Captain Shihōin?" Shuuichi asked, pausing.
"These two can't die yet," Yoruichi replied calmly. "We need intel. How did they get inside Seireitei unnoticed?"
She left unsaid her deeper concern.
Those unique forms—she'd never seen a Quincy Vollständig like this.
Were the remnants of the Quincy in the human world scheming again?
If so, that spelled disaster.
Especially for people like Kurosaki Ichigo and Ishida Uryū.
Before she could press further, dark hands reached up from the shadows—dragging the wounded Sternritter away.
Gone.
Shuuichi shrugged. "Well, that answers that."
He had expected it.
The Wandenreich would not leave valuable assets exposed—especially not after the death of Äs Nödt.
They'd likely been watching through the shadows all along.
Yoruichi scowled. From the outside, it looked like her intervention had allowed their escape.
If not for her noble status, the Central 46 would likely be preparing a very unpleasant inquiry.
"They were pulled into the shadows," Shuuichi said flatly. "Just like they arrived. No warning, no presence."
Kyōraku Shunsui arrived, assistant Nanao in tow, just in time to hear the end.
"I agree," he nodded. "That method of entry... it had to be shadow-based."
Shuuichi elaborated, "I was in my office. They materialized out of nowhere. And during the fight, they manipulated shadows expertly—teleportation, reishi storage, even stealth."
Shunsui frowned.
"You're suggesting they might be hiding in our shadows right now?"
"Can't rule it out," Shuuichi said. "And I believe in planning for the worst. We still have resources—and at least one corpse."
He looked toward Äs Nödt's remains.
"A good starting point."
"...Right," Shunsui murmured. "I've been too cautious lately. Maybe it's time to move."
The two captains exchanged a nod.
And just like that, with a few short exchanges, a potential catastrophe was contained—its scale known only to a few.
As for the rest of Soul Society?
No sirens. No panic.
Only whispers among the captains.
The first ripple of the Wandenreich had struck Seireitei.
And it had picked the wrong man to start with.
