Chapter 157: Chapter 157: Ferocious Ghost Soldiers!
"Sister." Shi Feng and Zi Ya were walking through Ghost Town when suddenly a hoarse voice rang out. Zi Ya looked down to see a cute little girl about six or seven years old with a chubby face. The soul of the little girl stood beside her, reaching out her semi-transparent little hand, trying to grasp Zi Ya’s hand, but it passed right through.
Then, the little girl tried several times, and because her Soul Power was too weak, she couldn’t touch Zi Ya’s hand at all. The little girl then sadly lowered her head and said, "I forgot, I’m already dead." Her voice was hoarse and feeble, not at all what a little girl should sound like.
"This..." Zi Ya, influenced by the little girl’s emotions, looked helplessly towards Shi Feng.
"It’s okay, I know." Shi Feng said. Then he cast a pale white mark, which landed on the little girl’s body. Shortly after, the girl’s originally semi-transparent body became solid. Zi Ya reached out her hand to touch the little girl’s head, and this time, it felt like she was truly touching a real head, although the place where her hand touched was ice cold.
Such a young child, to have died like this and in such painful circumstances.
Zi Ya recalled the endless white bones she had seen and the bones disassembled one by one. Such a tragic fate had befallen such a young child.
"Sister, your hand is so warm and comfortable. I haven’t felt this warmth in a long time," the little girl lifted her head and said to Zi Ya. Zi Ya saw the pale face, the eyes half-closed, as if she were a little kitten, showcasing the smile of enjoyment when being petted.
Seeing this smile, Zi Ya’s heart ached even more.
"Sister, brother, are you here to save us?" the little girl suddenly spoke, looking at Zi Ya and then Shi Feng, "The adults said that the bad man who killed us will one day want to eat us too. Sister, brother, you are here to save us, aren’t you?" the little girl asked again.
"Yes, we are here to save you," Zi Ya said gently to the little girl. "With us here, that bad man won’t dare to bully you anymore."
"Mhm," the little girl smiled sweetly and then nodded with a laugh, "Sister, you must not lie to me."
"I won’t, rest assured. Sister, and brother, will definitely chase the bad man away for you," Zi Ya promised.
"Mhm, I believe you, sister," the little girl said, her small face breaking into a happy smile as she ran off.
"Little ghost." Shi Feng watched as the little girl ran into the distance.
"Why would you say that, calling her a little ghost?" Zi Ya looked at Shi Feng with some dissatisfaction.
"Do you really think she’s an innocent and simple little girl? Her age is even greater than yours; it’s just that her soul has retained the appearance it had before death," Shi Feng said indifferently.
"But she’s still a little girl," Zi Ya insisted.
"Her mind has long since grown. She puts on that act just to gain your sympathy because they saw my extraordinary abilities, and since I didn’t agree to help them, they chose a little ghost to come out," Shi Feng explained.
"That’s not as bad as you make it out to be," Zi Ya said, even more dissatisfied after hearing Shi Feng’s words.
Shi Feng just smiled and did not say anything more, perhaps, in the heart of this simple Snake-man Clan Girl, everyone was as pure as she was.
"The Ghost Soldiers are coming."
"The Ghost Soldiers are coming."
Suddenly, mournful voices arose, and the originally wooden and pale ghost faces began to drastically change. Then, as if out of control, streams of wandering souls drifted toward the entrance of the town.
"Let’s go as well," Shi Feng said to Zi Ya.
"Okay." Zi Ya nodded firmly and said, "We must drive away these bad people, no, bad ghosts."
At the entrance of the town, eleven Ghost Soldiers dressed in dark armors covered with ghastly and sharp barbs lined up in front. The wandering souls floated before them, kneeling on the ground, and bowed their heads deeply. More and more ghosts arrived until the street was densely packed with their translucent bodies.
The eleven Ghost Soldiers, looking at the kneeling ghosts before them, had not a trace of emotion on their cold, pale faces.
"Hiss hiss!" Suddenly, the Ghost Soldier in the center took a couple of strong sniffs, then lashed out with a black whip in his hand, striking the ghost in front of him hard. "Crack!"
"Ah!" The struck ghost immediately let out a piercing scream, like a mouse being scorched by fire.
The expression on the eleven Ghost Soldiers’ faces remained indifferent upon hearing the dreadful scream, as cold as ever, akin to whipping a penned pig or dog.
Afterward, the raspy and grating voice of the Ghost Soldier rang out: "Speak! Have the living come here?" And then another brutal lash came down. "Crack!"
"Ah!" The soul cried out in agony once again, making every other ghost’s soul body shiver with horror.
"Ah! Stop hitting me, my lord, I’ll talk, I’ll talk!" The ghost howled miserably under the onslaught of the whip, hastily saying, "Indeed, two living people have arrived, a man and a woman."
"Where are they now?" the Ghost Soldier asked coldly.
To avoid more whipping, the ghost hurriedly replied as soon as the Ghost Soldier had finished speaking: "They are still here; I just saw them strolling around out back."
"Hm, understood," the Ghost Soldier said, and then lashed the ghost once more, as if whipping them at his own capricious whim, no different than striking livestock.
"Ah!"
Then the Ghost Soldier commanded the other ten: "Lord Ghost King is most fond of consuming the fresh blood and flesh of the living. Go capture those two humans and bring them as an offering to Lord Ghost King. Remember, they must be alive; otherwise, if the flesh is no longer fresh, Lord Ghost King will surely place blame."
"Yes!" the ten Ghost Soldiers responded in unison.
Just then, a melodious voice sounded not far from the street: "You needn’t bother, we’re on our way over ourselves."
Following that, everyone looked back to see a man and a woman walking slowly towards them, just as casually as they had been seen strolling before.
"This lord... this lord has really come; he plans to help us," a kneeling ghost whispered to another beside him.
"Yes, this lord is our hope! He is extraordinary. We can’t help but kneel before him when we see him."
"But even if he can contend with the Ghost King’s Ghost Soldiers, what about the Ghost King himself? As long as the Ghost King remains, we cannot escape our dreadful fate!" another ghost added. Upon hearing this voice, many of the ghosts’ pale faces once again showed signs of sorrow.
