Chapter 391: Letter
Chapter 391: Letter
Every hook had a small white tape. A blue pen was used to write down the room number on the tape. These should be the spare keys. Most of the hooks had two keys, and some only had one. Those with only one key had been rented out. They corresponded to the travellers’ rooms. Jiang Cheng picked up the plate. One of the hooks was empty. After comparing the location, Hua Luo’s eyes shifted. This was Room 808, Wu’s room.
“Who took Room 808’s spare key?” Fatty blinked. “Was it the landlord?”
Chu Jiu shook her head and analysed, “I don’t think so. Since he knew what happened in Room 808, he wouldn’t want to get involved.”
“If it’s not him, who could it be?” Fatty remembered something and offered, “Could it be Wu? When he took the key, there was only one left for his room. Therefore, he took the last key.”
“Then, why didn’t he ask about it?” Hua Luo scratched his chin and countered, “I refuse to believe he wouldn’t notice something that obvious.”
“Maybe he took both keys,” Fatty said, but he didn’t really believe it. No one would purposely go against the NPC’s order at the start of the mission. That was no different from courting death.
“Do you remember this?” Wan Xiaoning spoke, “Wu went to the drawer to pick his room key. The landlord gave us our keys.”
Fatty’s heart filled with a bad feeling. “What is your point?” Everyone thought about Wu’s behaviour and the clues they had found. Something was wrong.
“You mean, Wu is different from us.” Hua Luo lowered his voice, “He is a ghost who has mixed among us?!”
“That’s not a bad guess.” Jiang Cheng continued, “Assuming that is true, when did the ghost slip into our ranks? If the real Wu were murdered, it would have been before the mission officially started.” Jiang Cheng’s hypothesis was… hard to accept.“Do you mean Wu never existed? From the beginning, he was a ghost?!” Chu Jiu gasped.
“Don’t worry.” Jiang Cheng comforted her. “This is just a hypothesis, but it could explain why Wu is different from us from the start, right?”
Actually, there were many loopholes about Wu. The key was just one of them. He luckily chose Lin Chen’s room, but he was fine. Plus, he was so cavalier about the mission…
“Impossible.” After a short silence, Wan Xiaoning shook her head. “The ghost would never take over the player’s identity before the mission officially started.” As if to verify her words, she looked around. “Have you encountered something like this before?” No one answered her, but based on their eyes, no one had encountered something like this.
“That doesn’t mean something like this wouldn’t happen.” Jiang Cheng stared at her. “Perhaps those who encountered this had died.” Survivor’s bias.
“That’s why this is just a hypothesis. We need evidence to test it.” Jiang Cheng patted his clothes. “Of course, if we can confirm something’s wrong with Wu, I believe we’ve found our person in black.”
Fatty sucked in a cold breath. Wu’s image appeared in his mind. He couldn’t reconcile it with the person in black. Something didn’t seem right. This mission was different from the ones they faced in the past. To be honest, even though the mission had a lot of ghosts, they were relatively kind. So far, only three people have died. This was a 75 percent survival rate. That was unimaginable. The rules… had shifted slightly.
Hua Luo thought about it and looked at Jiang Cheng. The man appeared unreliable, but he was a valuable teammate. “Mr. Hao,” He whispered, “What do you think we should do now?”
“We need to figure out Lin Chen’s social circle.” Jiang Cheng put down the plate, shut the drawer and turned to Hua Luo, “Since you can get her files from the police, can you get Lin Chen’s drafts? It would be great if they were near the time of her death.” Many artists tended to express themselves in their art. Jiang Cheng hoped this would be the opening they needed.
Hua Luo nodded. “I’ll try.”
Then, Jiang Cheng scanned everyone with judgmental eyes. Wan Xiaoning frowned. She didn’t like to be examined like this. It made her feel cheap.
“Other than Wu, is any of you familiar with the other two from Building Three?” Jiang Cheng asked in a roundabout way. “Or familiar… with their background?” He was asking if they were part of their group. Lu Huaxu was dead. Other than Wu, only Liu Guo and Wei Jingting remained. Jiang Cheng had to ask this question. They desperately needed to know more about Building Three to learn more about Wu.
Everyone looked at one another. No one admitted anything.
They didn’t stay there for long. As the day darkened, no one suggested they meet up with the people from Building Three. Since Wen Qing was on the seventh floor, they went to the sixth floor where Fatty’s room was.
Once they sat down, the phone rang. Fatty’s hand, which was searching the fridge for water, froze.
Jiang Cheng rushed to the phone. The screen showed an unfamiliar number. After calming down, he answered it.
Rapid breathing came from the other side. “Hello, is anyone there?” This was Liu Guo’s voice. He sounded like he was in a pickle. Wan Xiaoning was close to Jiang Cheng. When they heard Liu Guo’s voice, her pupils shrank. Jiang Cheng said nothing.
The person on the other end knew what was happening. He added urgently, “I’m Liu Guo. I’m trapped in Qiao Yu’s brother’s cafe. Wu and Wei Jingting have disappeared.”
Tsk…
Tsk…
“The location I’m at, no, the timeline I’m in is very strange.” Liu Guo uttered as static cut through his voice.
Tsk…
“Everything was fine. However, when I recovered, I was the only one in the cafe. Everyone else has disappeared.
“I’m at the front counter. The calendar here… says that it’s the 7th of July!
“That’s right!” Liu Guo said agitatedly, “I’ve gone back in time. And I… I have a letter with me. It’s meant for Ping An Apartment’s Room 808! The receiver is Lin Chen!”
