Night of Despair -
Chapter 88 - 88: Situation 2
Silence.
No one present knew what to say.
Yu Hong knew the situation was dangerous, but he didn't expect it to be this dangerous.
"That's the situation, Mr. Yu, the support team should arrive in about ten days, though it might be delayed or come earlier. I wonder if you over there..."
"No problem for me," Yu Hong calculated his supply of protein bars. His best supply came from the lizard jerky bought from Lao Li. A bag of ten sticks would last a normal person two days, but for him, they could last ten days. That made a fivefold difference round trip.
Currently, he still had over two hundred protein bars stored in his cave, which included the supplies from the last supply team and those from Li Rushan's own farming.
Previously, Old Yu could supply a circle of people by farming on his own. Now, although Li Rushan wasn't as efficient alone, providing for three was more than enough.
"Then it's settled," Wei Hongye said in a deep voice, "The pressure on the frontline is too high, and we're gradually opening gaps to relieve the loss from the pressure. For now, in a month, the Gate of Despair will endlessly release the Black Disaster, and your external threats in the wild will escalate sharply with the first wave hitting. Everyone... try to get close to the big city."
The communication ended.
Wei Shanshan cried with a face covered in tears, her eyes swollen like peaches.
"How are you planning to take care of Wei Shanshan and her mother?" Li Rushan asked, looking at Yu Hong.
"Can they stay here?" Yu Hong was considering that his place was a bit inconvenient. He couldn't let anyone into his current safe house.
So the only choice was to stay in the post office basement.
"That's fine, but I can't handle their food and drinks, or medicine..." Li Rushan shrugged, "I'm already responsible for four shares, the burden is heavy."
"...So what? Do you have any extra mushroom grow boxes?" Yu Hong asked. He had to start handling the food situation himself too.
It was only a matter of time. He originally hadn't planned it so soon, but the situation with Wei Shanshan forced him to plan ahead.
"It's simple, mostly we lack spores, and just so the group over in the village has some. You can trade with them for it. You have the manual on how to grow them, right? The records we found from Old Yu, right?" Li Rushan asked.
"No problem." Yu Hong nodded and looked at Wei Shanshan, whose eyes were misty with tears.
"Let's go, first to your mom, and bring her here before talking further." Since they made the trade, it was time to act quickly, fast and decisive.
Wei Shanshan shivered all over and nodded promptly.
She opened her mouth as if to say something but ended up saying nothing, standing behind Yu Hong with her head down.
"Oh right, Old Li, since the supply team is no longer, does that mean the mailing too..." Yu Hong suddenly thought of this issue.
"Sigh... it's not a channel issue, but the difficulty of mailing will greatly increase. I'll tell you once I get specific information." Old Li said helplessly.
Without more words, Yu Hong led Wei Shanshan out of the stone house, holding a local network communicator, and returned to the cave's safe house.
He didn't let Wei Shanshan in, simply asked her to take a talisman board and wait outside the courtyard.
Then he put everything away, took out various tools, and quickly began looking for a spot next to the courtyard wall.
Once he found it, he dragged wood from the nearby forest and started swiftly building a simple wooden house.
In the afternoon.
Wei Shanshan stood dazed outside the courtyard wall, watching Yu Hong swiftly dragging logs from the forest, over a half-person-high wall.
He carried one log in each arm, bringing in at least a few hundred pounds of logs into the yard.
Then, taking out an axe and saw, seemingly never needing rest or money for stamina, in just half an hour, he chopped the logs into neat planks.
Using the planks, he constructed a simple wooden house, laid a layer on the ground, inserted long thick planks on all sides, made a pointy sloped roof, painted it with leftover waterproof paint, and finally pressed random leaves on top.
A small wooden house, measuring two meters wide by three meters long, big enough to fit a large bed, was completed.
The wooden house stood over two meters high, entirely in a light brown color, resembling a large doghouse. It was adjacent to the courtyard wall and had a thick plank floor, looking reasonably well-made.
"Let's go. It's getting dark, let's get your mother here first." Yu Hong clapped his hands, looking at the enhanced Red Value Detector, which had already finished.
The enhanced detector had become smaller, fitting in hand like a cellphone; its surface was much smoother, still black with an LCD screen, and without other changes.
Yu Hong pressed the only round button switch.
Beep.
After a short sound, numbers appeared on the LCD screen.
"Current Red Value: -79.348."
Impressive!
Yu Hong silently praised in his heart.
The previous accuracy was only 79, and now it had improved to three decimal places.
He carefully looked at the upper right corner of the LCD screen, where a battery symbol was marked, with very tiny text underneath: "Remaining Time—56 hours and 07 minutes."
*So, it could be used continuously for fifty-six more hours. With the power off, there'd be even more time!* Yu Hong breathed a sigh of relief internally.
Before this, the Red Value Detector could only be used for a few hours, mainly kept off. It was only turned on when something felt off to check the data.
But after the enhancement, this detector could now be kept on for long periods to continuously monitor the surroundings.
*Just several hours of enhancement, absolutely worth it!* Yu Hong went back into the cave, picked up another Red Value Detector, and directly started a second enhancement. He planned to make one for Stammering Yiyi.
After doing this, he called Wei Shanshan and headed towards Baiqiu Village.
The two quickened their pace, following the familiar gravel road to the village entrance.
By then, the entrance had furniture moved by people and piled up to form obstacles, leaving only a small entrance in the middle.
Two young men guarding it sat behind the obstacles, holding long knives and pistols.
The two seemed to be chatting idly, speaking in a heavy-accented local dialect.
Yu Hong couldn't understand them, so he motioned for Wei Shanshan to go negotiate.
His goal this time was to pick people up and avoid causing trouble or disputes if possible.
Wei Shanshan nodded and walked up, knocking on the obstacle.
Thump, thump.
"I'm Wei Shanshan from the third team, please let me in, thank you."
The two raised their eyes to glance outside.
The first thing they saw wasn't Wei Shanshan, but the massive, exaggerated shadow behind her.
A six-foot-three frame, covered in a thick black bulletproof suit, wearing a helmet, with tree trunk-like thick legs. Around the waist was a black thick-barreled pistol.
When this person approached, they hadn't noticed, but now they realized, with such gear, if he made a move, it's...
"Weren't you going out to find medicine, Shanshan?" one of them asked vigilantly. "Who is this person?"
"He's the doctor I brought. Please open the door, I need to see my mom." Wei Shanshan said again.
"This... you may come in, but as for the one beside you... if he wants to come, please have him remove his gun, and he can't wear this gear inside." The other hesitated before responding.
"Mr. Yu is the doctor I hired!" Wei Shanshan argued loudly.
"What kind of doctor wears such extravagant gear!? Stop it! Do you want to come in or not? Hurry up and go away if you don't!" he said impatiently.
"It's fine, go in and bring your mom out, I'll wait here." Yu Hong instructed.
If unnecessary, he planned not to have unnecessary conflicts with these people.
Moreover, his gear indeed looked dangerous at a glance.
Wei Shanshan thanked him with a bow.
"I'll go first then. Please wait a moment." She quickly squeezed between the obstacles, said something quietly to the two men, and then quickly ran along the small path between the houses inside.
Soon, within five minutes, she was supporting a woman in her thirties along the small road back out.
The woman's face was pale, constantly coughing, and her lips were cracked, showing signs of dehydration.
It was apparent that despite her age, her exquisite eyebrows still showed a trace of sharpness, and her facial features closely resembled Wei Shanshan's. However, she was not cute and delicate, possessing more of a career woman's demeanor.
Her physique was fuller, wearing a gray tracksuit and black sneakers that were already dirty, stained with mud prints, her long black hair tied up with a hairband, revealing a pale neck matching her complexion.
*This woman is clearly not easy to get along with.* Yu Hong observed from afar and subconsciously concluded.
It was evident that someone like Wei Shanshan, with such a weak personality likely developed because she was used to having every part of her life decided for her, unable to resist, and thus consistently in a subordinate role.
And now it seemed clear, her mother was probably the one in charge.
As the two women slowly approached, passing the two gate guards, the guards avoided them like the plague, stepping far away, afraid of being infected by Wei Shanshan's mother's cough.
Yu Hong also felt a bit uneasy, worrying if the woman's illness could be contagious to him.
Luckily, he was now wearing a respiratory filter and had previously set up a little cabin for the two women to stay.
The luminescent grass under the cabin was transplanted elsewhere, essentially creating a small non-radioactive isolation area as a residence within the yard.
"This must be Mr. Yu, right? Thank you for your trouble. I am Qiu Yanxi, Shanshan's mother," Wei Shanshan's mother spoke as she assessed Yu Hong.
"It's fine, just a transaction. Can we speed it up? We need to get back to the safe house before dark," Yu Hong asked in a deep voice.
After saying this, he saw her troubled expression and knew it probably wouldn't be fast.
"Shall I carry you, would you mind?"
Qiu Yanxi glanced back at the village, saw only two girls peeking for fun inside, and her eyes dimmed, so she turned back.
"I don't mind, please." She said softly.
"Alright." Yu Hong flexed his arms and suddenly reached out, grabbing the back of Wei Shanshan's shirt in one hand and Qiu Yanxi's in the other.
Then he lifted them both.
"Ah!!!" X2.
With two screams of terror, they were lifted as if hanging on a coat rack, sprawled with limbs outstretched, rushing down the slope at high speed.
Yu Hong's strength after the breakthrough was far greater than before, lifting a person was as easy as picking up cardboard, light and effortless.
The two together only weighed slightly more than his huge wooden shield and Wolf Fang Club.
A maximum of one hundred seventy or eighty.
Before the breakthrough, he could fully wield the huge wooden shield and the Wolf Fang Club for several minutes, not counting the Inner Qi endurance.
After the breakthrough, his strength had increased tremendously, making it even easier.
Soon, after a few minutes, they arrived at the safe house.
Yu Hong stuffed them into the small wooden house in the courtyard, went back into the cave to get a quilt, tossed it in, and was done.
Next up was medicine, with the time for strengthening anti-inflammatory drugs being just over two hours. He planned to enhance them before giving them to the two women, as he promised to care for them, so he needed to put in some effort.
But as it was getting dark now, time might run out, and ensuring the two's safety outside required some guarantee.
Yu Hong dug out the candle he hadn't used for a long time, poured a cup of hot water and brought two protein bars, handing them over to the two.
Then, "bang," he closed the door and left them to it.
