Chapter 43: Pub
Ring!
Ring!
Ring!
The bell rang loudly and echoed in the air as Coco pushed the front door of the Red Horse Inn open.
As she walked into the inn with Lala perched and sitting comfortably on her shoulders, she found herself immediately struck by the cozy, inviting atmosphere.
The noises from the street are gone and so was the clamor and hustle of the outdoors, replaced by a more subdued din of conversation and the smell of roasting meat and baked bread.
She didn’t notice this last night, but the inn’s interior was warm and inviting, the walls paneled in dark wood, and the furniture worn— taking in the comfortable wooden furniture, the simple, but well-kept decorations which makes it aesthetically pleasing for the eyes.
She can hear a fire crackling nearby, the flickering flames adding a cozy touch to the peaceful and friendly scene before her.
"Man.. This place would have been popular if this existed back on Earth." Coco murmured, admiring the interior design of the place for a moment.
She inhaled sharply, a delicious scent filling her nostrils— the air was filled with the scent of freshly cooked food which made her stomach growl, making her hunger’s presence known.
"Oops! You’re really hungry, Coco!" Lala said, a happy and excited giggle escaping her lips as she rubbed her cheek against Coco’s cheek, "Let’s go to the room next door, you need to eat before we do our sleep over."
"Hmm.. You’re right." Coco smiled, chuckling under her breath and turned her head to the right where the pub was located.
She made her way across the inn’s main room, the battered sole of her shoes clicking softly on the hardwood floor.
As soon as she went inside, she could feel the other people inside the room watching her, their laughers and cheery chatters ceasing as their gazes followed her as she walked past the tables and chairs.
The pub sure was a comfortable and cozy space, the air thick with the smell of ale, freshly cooked food, and tobacco.
No wonder Coco Hughes always frequents the bar, the place looks amazing with the air a mix of a couple pleasant scents.
She took a seat at the table on the corner of the room, the wooden surface cool beneath her fingers as she took a seat on the wooden chair and settled in, her eyes taking in the other customers, listening to the sounds of hushed conversation and whispers around her.
She’s already used to seeing people whispering to each other about who knows what whenever she’s in their presence.
People just have to have something and someone to gossip about, but do they have the perfect someone in mind? The answer is yes.
Coco’s right eyebrow twitched slightly when the same arrogant and condescending woman started to make her way to Coco’s table.
She wasn’t in the mood to deal with anyone’s shit and this woman would surely get it if she tried to cross the line.
Just because you have big boobs doesn’t mean I’ll tolerate your big attitude. Coco mentally mused, eyeing the woman who was making her way to her, her eyes unintentionally going downwards.
The moment Coco would catch herself staring as the woman’s jiggle physics started, she would immediately look away and shake her head, before repeating the process again until the said woman stood before her.
"What can I get for you?" She asked, her voice flat and monotone, crossing her arms in front of her.
Coco felt like a scumbag for letting her eyes wander downwards several times. How could she call herself a gentlewoman if she keeps on eyeing the woman’s big boobs? Has she got no shame?
Coco strangled the imaginary Coco in her mind, beating her out of her for being a pervert.
Then, she forced out a cough, "What’s on tonight’s menu?"
"Roasted flying pig’s belly, boiled and baked potatoes, and vegetable salad." She answered Coco’s question, listing off the menu for the night.
At the mention of the pork belly, Coco’s eyes went wide and she perked up, "Roasted belly and baked potatoes, please."
"How many cups of rice?"
"Uhh.. Three? If you have sauce, bring me some as well" Coco stated, smiling enthusiastically at the thought of eating rice and roasted belly.
The woman eyes her, her eyebrows furrowed with an unreadable expression on her face, "Understood. Please wait here, I’ll bring out the food you ordered."
As the woman walks away, a sudden thought emerges from the back of Coco’s mind.
"Miss!" She called out to the woman which caught the attention of the other people inside the pub. Well, their attention was already on her so she just made it worse and made them glue their eyes at her.
"Call over the inn owner, too! I have something to say!" Coco quickly added on, loud and clear, since the woman didn’t walk back to know what Coco wanted.
The woman nodded her head, turning around and walking away from the row of tables to go to the bar where she walked through the door leading to the kitchen.
"Is the roasted belly good, Coco?" Lala asked, flying down to the table and stood on her small feet, her wings ceased their flapping movements as she walked around the wooden surface.
Coco nodded her head, unable to speak because of the people inside the pub.
"Do you think the owner of the chef bought the flying pig belly earlier?" The sweet and loving fairy inquired, flopping herself down on the back of Coco’s hand.
Coco shrugged her shoulders discreetly, acting as if she’s rolling her shoulders to avoid suspicions.
Not long after, Coco saw the woman walk out of the kitchen with someone following behind her, the sight of him made her jaw drop in astonishment.
"I heard from Ms. Lilith that you called for me, Mrs. Hughes?" The man’s soft and gentle voice reached her ears.
Just how can someone look so delicate?!
